This paper presents the design of a scalable, high power battery system for pulsed power operations. The battery system is modular in design, with each module containing four Lithium Ion Polymer (LiPo) cells and a custom designed cell management board that actively monitors the voltage and temperature of each cell and also provides cell balancing functionality. The system is designed to be scalable by adding up to 25 modules in a series configuration. While the battery management system should be compatible with any lithium ion cells, this implementation uses 8 Ah capacity dual-core LiPo cells, rated for a 150 C discharge rate; allowing for a peak current output of 1,200 A. With 25 modules (96 LiPo cells) the system would have an open circuit voltage of 385 V and be capable of providing up to 1,200 A at 355 V for a peak output power of 420 kW. Special attention has been placed on safety features including overvoltage, undervoltage and temperature monitoring of every cell in the system. The charging/balancing system is capable of automatically shutting down if any of the voltages or temperatures exceeds established limits. The management circuitry is designed to have a low off-state power draw in order to maximize battery life when the system is not in use.

Liquid scintillation counter (LSC) has been used as a very efficient technique for a quantitative measurement of radioactivity. The LSC has been the most powerful tool in the fields of low level environmental radioactivity monitoring and the detection of low energy beta decay events of radioactivity. In LSC the sample is dissolved in a liquid scintillation cocktail in a sample vial. In order to quantify the nuclear decay in terms of activity, the LSC counts the number of flashes of scintillation lights. However, the sample's count rate varies with the detection efficiency that depends on the energy conversion from the released beta ray energy in nuclear decay to light flashes. Since the sample solution absorbs part of nuclear decay energy and photons of scintillation lights, which is known as quench, the observed count rate becomes less than the expected rate from actual energy. Therefore the compensation of count rate loss is essential to determine the sample's activity. There are many techniques to determine the efficiency, however, it is known that those techniques lead different results especially in low energy beta decay radionuclides such as ~3H. In order to investigate the influence of quench phenomena in LSC, we developed a Geant4 based Monte Carlo simulation and validated the beta-ray scintillation spectra in LSC. The simulation takes into account radioactive decay, flashes of scintillation lights, and transportation of optical photons including reflection and refraction characteristics at material boundaries. In this paper, we report on the detail of our simulation and the comparison of beta ray spectra detected in LSC between the simulation and measurements.

Background: Surveillance of health care-associated infections is an essential component of infection prevention programs, but conventional systems are labor intensive and performance dependent. Objective: To develop an automatic surveillance and classification system for health care-associated bloodstream infection (HABSI), and to evaluate its performance by comparing it with a conventional infection control personnel (ICP)-based surveillance system. Methods: We developed a Web-based system that was integrated into the medical information system of a 2200-bed teaching hospital in Taiwan. The system automatically detects and classifies HABSIs. Results: In this study, the number of computer-detected HABSIs correlated closely with the number of HABSIs detected by ICP by department (n=20;r=.999 P<.001) and by time (n=14;r=.941;P<.001). Compared with reference standards, this system performed excellently with regard to sensitivity (98.16%), specificity (99.96%), positive predictive value (95.81%), and negative predictive value (99.98%). The system enabled decreasing the delay in confirmation of HABSI cases, on average, by 29 days. Conclusions: This system provides reliable and objective HABSI data for quality indicators, improving the delay caused by a conventional surveillance system. © 2020 JMIR Publications Inc. It has been shown that information about a consumer's actions, beliefs and preferences can be extracted from high resolution load data. This information can be used in ways that violate consumer privacy. In order to increase consumer control over this information, it has been suggested that load data be represented in multiple resolutions, with each resolution secured with a different key. To make this approach work in the real-world, a suitable key management needs to be employed. In this paper, we consider a combination of multi-resolution load data representation with hierarchical key management. Emphasis is placed on a privacy-aware design that gives the end-user the freedom to decide which entity is allowed to access user related data and at what granularity.

The objective of this JSTQE Issue on Biophotonics is to highlight recent progress and trends in innovative biophotonics technology development. The papers published in this issue cover a broad range of advanced biophotonics areas summarized in the following sections: 1) bioimaging: optical coherence tomography and microscopy, nonlinear optical imaging, and novel multimodality imaging approaches; 2) biosensing: multifunctional biosensing, and novel biosensing approaches; 3) biophotonic science: mechanisms of light-cell and lighttissue interactions, advanced modeling methods in biophotonics, and light induced biophotonics effects; 4) biophotonic technology: advanced technologies in biophotonic diagnostics and therapeutics, infrared technology in biophotonics, and novel laser, biomedical and fiber optics tools and devices in biophotonics. These key research topics are highlighted as comprehensive overviews of the current status and future trends, as well as original results and recent developments in the field of biophotonics. This issue contains 33 papers, including 18 invited and 15 contributed papers authored by well-established research groups and promising scientists from all over the world. The invited papers include extended reviews on recent biophotonic developments and clinical applications in the areas of highresolution multispectral bioimaging, combined multifunctional microscopy, nonlinear deep tissue imaging, single molecule imaging, optical coherence elastography, cellular and molecular mechanisms of photobiomodulation, tissue optical clearing, clinical ultrafast laser surgery, infrared laser nerve stimulation, and novel tapered diode lasers for biophotonics. This paper discusses randomly placed antenna array elements for direction of arrival and adaptive beamforming determination. Random array structures are discussed with various configurations. This work can be extended to space applications using a cluster of small satellites that are not aligned together in a standard linear or planar geometrical configuration but in some random fashion.

Voltage differential feedback control system based on repetitive control is proposed in this paper. The scheme, which can improve the dynamic characteristic and steady state performance by Capacitor voltage as outer loop while its differential as inner loop without current sensor, is achieved on a three-phase PV inverter with TMS320F2808. Two different control strategies, traditional and repetitive control , have been applied in three-phase PV inverter platform. The experiment results indicate repetitive control system has a faster dynamic response and a more accurate output regulation than those of traditional one.

We propose a continuous-variable measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (CV-MDI QKD) protocol, in which detection is conducted by an untrusted third party. Our protocol can defend all detector side channels, which seriously threaten the security of a practical CV QKD system. Its security analysis against arbitrary collective attacks is derived based on the fact that the entanglement-based scheme of CV-MDI QKD is equivalent to the conventional CV QKD with coherent states and heterodyne detection. We find that the maximal total transmission distance is achieved by setting the untrusted third party close to one of the legitimate users. Furthermore, an alternate detection scheme, a special application of CV-MDI QKD, is proposed to enhance the security of the standard CV QKD system.

In this paper, the theme of Exponential Synchronization (ES) for a new class of Complex Dynamical Networks (CDN) with hybrid Time-Varying Delay (TVD) and Non-Time-Varying Delay (NTVD) nodes is investigated by using coupling Periodically Intermittent Pinning control (PIPC). Based on the Lyapunov Stability Theory (LST), Kronecker product rules and PIPC method, sufficient conditions for ES and PIPC criteria of such CDN are derived. The obtained results are effective and less conservative. Furthermore, to verify the effectiveness of the proposed theoretical results, Barabasi-Albert Network (BAN) and Nearest-Neighbor Network (NNN) consisting of coupled non-delayed and delay Lee oscillators are finally given as the examples.

In this paper we propose a centralized algorithm for stable operation of a multi-robot dome inspection, repair, and maintenance based on potential field method. The multi-robot system consists of two robots, a leader robot and a supporter robot, connected to each other by two strings. The follower robot sends its information to the leader robot for processing and receiving commands. The leader robot uses the friction model, the slope of the dome detected by the two robots' tilt sensors and the mass of the robots to calculate the stability ranges and determines the proper action to make the whole system stable. The leader robot moves toward its target pose while adjusting the tension of its string using potential field method to combine the attractive and repulsive potentials. The follower robot executes the commands sent by the leader robot to create the most stable configuration for the whole system. It is shown that the algorithm can guarantee stable operation all over a typical dome. The algorithm has been implemented and shown its effectiveness in simulation. Furthermore, the effect of each parameter has been discussed and it is shown that the multi-robot system is capable of completely covering a typical dome using the proposed potential field algorithm. © 2013 IEEE.
