Power system in India is becoming very large and complex due to increase in open access users, where some of them draw power from the grid and some of them inject power into the grid. Deviations in power schedules lead to grid instability. To maintain the grid stability real-time monitoring of scheduled power quantum is essential. The solution proposed in this paper provides the real-time meter data acquisition which includes voltage, current, power, frequency, etc and also 15 minutes average load survey data acquisition using TARA (Transmission of Aggregated data for Real-time Access) device. TARA device collects the real-time data and 15 minutes average load data from meters using MODBUS/DLMS (Device Language Message specification) standard communication protocols and transmits data to the control center. TARA uses a GSM/GPRS (Global System for Mobile / General Packet Radio Service(3G/4G)), WAN (Wide Area Network) and LAN (Local Area Network) to provide an economical and viable solution for data transmission. The data acquired at the control center is processed and presented to the operators using the latest web tools to take accurate decisions in maintaining the grid discipline and also helps the open access users to adhere to schedules.

Short-Term power market cover contracts of less than a year period by bilateral transactions through Trading Licensees or directly by the Distribution Companies (DISCOMS) and power exchanges. The Open Access bilateral transactions for short-term power market between the states or inter-state is handled by regional load despatch centre (RLDC) and follows Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) guidelines. According to CERC guidelines for inter-State Open Access bilateral transaction, the traders/licensees need to take concurrence from the state load dispatcher center (SLDC) which is an offline activity. The Open Access for short-term bilateral transaction within state or intra-State is handled by SLDC which is also an offline activity. Both these offline activities are time consuming and error prone and hence delay the overall process of open access bilateral transaction at both regional and state level. To make these activities online for each SLDC, a huge initial investment is required. In this paper, we present a cost-effective solution as Software as a Service (SaaS) on cloud environment for all SLDC(s). The cloud technology is used for implementation to make the solution highly scalable, easily configurable and easily manageable [1].

Poor-quality images mostly result in spurious or missing features, which further degrade the overall performance of fingerprint recognition systems. This paper proposes a reconfigurable scheme of quality checks at two different levels: i) at raw image level and ii) at feature level. At first level, ellipse properties are calculated through analysis of statistical attributes of the captured raw image. At second level, the singularity points (core & delta) are identified and extracted (if any). These information, as quality measures, are used in a cascaded manner to block/pass the image. This model is tested on both publicly available (Cross Match Verifier 300 sensor) as well as proprietary (Lumidigm Venus V100 OEM Module sensor) fingerprint databases scanned at 500 dpi. The experimental results show that this cascaded arrangement of quality barricades could correctly block poor quality images and hence elevated the overall system accuracy: with quality checks, both FNMR and FMR significantly dropped to 9.52% & 0.26% respectively for Cross Match Dataset and 2.17% & 2.16% respectively for Lumidigm Dataset.

Several different methods are compared, including Ewald sums, potential shifting, spherical truncation and reaction field corrections. In this paper we describe the semi-automatic annotation tool for annotating online handwritten data of Indic scripts. The annotation of handwriting data is essential to train and test the recognizers. In this paper we briefly describe the XML representation for storing online handwritten data in Indian languages. We then describe the annotation tool which essentially annotates at stroke, character and word level and exploits the uniqueness of XML standard to provide quality labels at different levels of annotation. The tool also facilitates classification of data based on quality of handwriting, age & region of writers. The annotator can verify the outputs suggested by the tool. The tool is supplemented by a utility for data segregation and accuracy calculator which aids quick performance analysis of recognizer. This tool is extensively used for annotating large amount of Hindi data and promising time saving is obtained in otherwise tedious annotation activity.

Assessment of sleep-stage patterns and sleep disorders with the conventional sensor system uses many electrodes and straps to record the physiological body parameters. This causes inconvenience to the person who undergoes the sleep study. Thus a contactless measurement system would be ideal for measurement of body parameters for sleep-stage pattern analysis. We propose a contactless measurement system called Smart Bed, to detect heartbeat, breathing pattern and body movements using load sensors installed on four legs of the bed. This method uses cardio ballistic force near the thorax region when blood is being pumped out of heart by the left ventricle, known as Ballistocardiography, to measure a heartbeat. A slightly slower frequency variation in the same thorax region caused by breathing effect is measured to get respiration signal. The body movement patterns are also detected along with the other parameters. These parameters have direct influence on sleep disorders & sleep-stage patterns. Conventional sensors are used to correlate the accuracy of detected parameters from load sensors. The Smart Bed can be used in home environment for long term monitoring without any supervision from trained professionals.

This paper provides a deeper insight into the synthesis mechanism of VHDL tools. It examines three methods of writing VHDL code, and each of the three models finite state machines in a different way. There can be significant reductions in the VLSI area and improvements in performance by adopting a certain modeling style, but this is at the cost of writing low level VHDL code, thereby undermining the purpose of VHDL as the design, entry medium. However, there is a simpler approach, which is demonstrated by a software tool called vtvt which allows writing VHDL code at high level and optimizes for area and performance without the burden of writing and maintaining low level code.
