With the proliferation of cloud services, the work of large-scale image retrieval is carried out on remote cloud become a trend in order to get rid of the storage burden and computation. However, traditional retrieval work based on centralized cloud services is considered to take risk in giving away users' privacy in many researches. We need a secure way for retrieving and storing images by decentralized approach. In this paper, we propose a decentralized scheme named PPIRB(An Privacy-Preserving Image Retrieval Scheme Base on Blockchain) for retrieving images based on blockchain. We used the data structure called amplifying locality sensitive hashing (ALSH) to improve search accuracy. Searchable symmetric en-cryption(SSE) and ALSH used to realize the encryption retrieval of image index on the blockchain. Our scheme also uses IPFS to replace the cloud server to realize distributed storage, and uses secret sharing scheme to realize the access control. We implemented and evaluated the scheme in Ethereum, and the results show that our scheme is efficient and accurate in finding similar images while preserving privacy. The overall overhead is reasonable. © 2022 IEEE.

This paper presents a chat application that make use of speech as interaction mode between users in their mother tongue. This system is based on Machine Translation (MT) which automatically translates a sentence from one language to other. Now-a-days, Chat has become increasingly important as an effective means to communicate in social networks. But in existing personal chat systems, chat services are text-based only. To circumvent this issue, innovative, practical XMPP-based chat system architecture is proposed in this paper that creates a Speech based chat services by integrating state-of-the-art technologies like Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR), Text to Speech (TTS) and Machine Translation (MT). The proposed system eliminates the need to have a common language for chat communication. In this chat system the user speak in their own language after selecting the language of their comfort. The audio will be recognized in real time. The text is translated to the language opted by end user and the system synthesizes it. Here, we discuss an interface prototype that can overcome the language barrier to some extent.

This research develops a real-time Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) for interpreting eye blinks as a means of hands-free communication, particularly useful for individuals with limited mobility or in high-focus tasks. Combining machine learning (ML) and signal processing, the study detects voluntary eye blinks with high accuracy. Data from 20 participants were analyzed using a random forest classifier, achieving accuracy between 85.29% and 92.15%. A peak detection method further improved blink detection accuracy to over 98%. This system enhances accessibility in various interactive environments, improving life quality for those with disabilities.

In this paper, we propose a smart assistive technology named Indriya, for aiding the visually impaired. The word “Indriya” is derived from Sanskrit language, meaning “Organ”. Indriya is a mini handheld device for the blind, which may be used with walking cane as a smart companion. The device features complete voice assistance for easy navigation, through simple button clicks. It can also detect obstacles ahead up to three meters and can differentiate between objects and humans with guaranteed 80% accuracy. Both vibratory and voice feedbacks are provided for accurate collision alerts. Indriya uses less number of sensors and extracts its smartness by incorporating Android and Internet of Things (IOT) support. In this work, we intend to put forth a novel, low cost and reliable approach to help the blind to explore the possibilities and power of smart phone technology in navigation.

HYDRA: Hybrid Data Multiplexing and Run-time Layer Configurable DNN Accelerator

Deep neural networks (DNNs) offer plenty of challenges in executing efficient computation at edge nodes, primarily due to the huge hardware resource demands. The article proposes HYDRA, hybrid data multiplexing, and runtime layer configurable DNN accelerators to overcome the drawbacks. The work proposes a layer-multiplexed approach, which further reuses a single activation function within the execution of a single layer with improved Fused-Multiply-Accumulate (FMA). The proposed approach works in iterative mode to reuse the same hardware and execute different layers in a configurable fashion. The proposed architectures achieve over 90% of power consumption and resource utilisation improvements of state-of-the-art works, with 35.21 TOPSW. The proposed architecture reduces the area-overhead (N-1) times required in bandwidth, AF and layer architecture. This work shows HYDRA architecture supports optimal DNN computations while improving performance on resource-constrained edge devices. © 2024, CC BY.

Cybersecurity threats highlight the need for robust network intrusion detection systems to identify malicious behaviour. These systems rely heavily on large datasets to train machine learning models capable of detecting patterns and predicting threats. In the past two decades, researchers have produced a multitude of datasets, however, some widely utilised recent datasets generated with CICFlowMeter contain inaccuracies. These result in flow generation and feature extraction inconsistencies, leading to skewed results and reduced system effectiveness. Other tools in this context lack ease of use, customizable feature sets, and flow labelling options. In this work, we introduce HERA, a new open-source tool that generates flow files and labelled or unlabelled datasets with user-defined features. Validated and tested with the UNSW-NB15 dataset, HERA demonstrated accurate flow and label generation.

On the hydration of monoatomic ions

It is shown that an understanding of some key biological processes such as the thermodynamics of enzyme-ligand binding or the selectivity of ion-channels is ultimately dependent on an understanding of the details of ion hydration. Therefore, a model for calculating the hydration free energy of ions in aqueous solvent is presented. The model is used to first calculate the proton hydration free energy, ΔGhyd(H+), in an effort to resolve the uncertainty concerning its exact value. In the model we define ΔGhyd(H+) as the free energy change associated with the following process: ΔG{H+(gas)+[H2O]n(aq)→H+[H2O]n)(aq)}, where the solvent is represented by a neutral n-water cluster embedded in a dielectric continuum and the solvated proton is represented by a protonated n-water cluster also in the continuum. All solvated species are treated as quantum mechanical solutes (B3LYP, MP2, MP4, CCSD(T)) coupled to a dielectric continuum using a self consistent reaction field (SCRF) cycle. An investigation of the behavior of ΔGhyd(H+) as the number of explicit waters of hydration is increased reveals convergence by n=4. The converged value is −262.23 kcal/mol and is independent of the ab initio method used. These results indicate that the first hydration shell of the proton is composed of at least 4 water molecules. The result strongly suggests that the proton hydration free energy is at the far lower end of the range of values obtained from the literature. The methodology is then used to calculate the hydration free energies of other ions relative to that of the proton. These include cationic forms of the alkali earth elements Li, Na, and K, and anionic forms of the halogens F, Cl, and Br. The relative ion hydration free energy is defined as Δ[ΔGhyd(Z±)]=G(Z±[H2O]n(aq))−G(H+[H2O]n(aq))−G(Z±(gas))−G(H+(gas))), where the solvated ions are represented by ion-water clusters coupled to a dielectric continuum using a self-consistent reaction field (SCRF) cycle. Power systems are showing a dynamic evolution in the last few years, caused in part by the adoption of smart grid technologies. The integration of new elements that represent a source of uncertainty, such as renewables generation, electric vehicles, variable loads and electricity markets, poses a higher degree of complexity causing that traditional mathematical formulations struggle in finding efficient solutions to problems in the smart grid context. In some situations, where traditional approaches fail, computational intelligence has demonstrated being a very powerful tool for solving optimization problems. In this paper, we analyze the application of Differential Evolution (DE) to address an energy resource management problem under uncertain environments. We perform a systematic parameter tuning to determine the best set of parameters of four state-of-the-art DE strategies. Having knowledge of the sensitivity of DE to the parameter selection, self-adaptive parameter control DE algorithms are also implemented, showing that competitive results can be achieved without the application of parameter tuning methodologies. Finally, a new hybrid-adaptive DE algorithm, HyDE, which uses a new “DE/target - to - perturbed_best/1” strategy and an adaptive control parameter mechanism, is proposed to solve the problem. Results show that DE strategies with fixed parameters, despite very sensitive to the setting, can find better solutions than some adaptive DE versions. Overall, our HyDE algorithm excelled all the other tested algorithms, proving its effectiveness solving a smart grid application under uncertainty.

Focus group discussion is an exploratory research technique used to collect data through group interaction. This technique provides the opportunity to observe interaction among participants on a topic under this study. This paper contributes to an understanding on the cyber terrorism conceptual framework through the analysis of focus group discussion. The proposed cyber terrorism conceptual framework which was obtained during the qualitative study by the authors has been used as a basis for discussion in the focus group discussion. Thirty (30) participants took part in the focus group discussion. The overall results suggest that the proposed cyber terrorism framework is acceptable by the participants. The present study supports our initial research that the cyber terrorism conceptual framework constitutes the following components: target, motivation, tools of attack, domain, methods of attack and impact.

Using agents to represent decision-makers is a complex task. It is important that agents can understand the context and be more proactive. Here we propose a model and an algorithm that will allow the agent to analyse tendencies regarding the number of supporters for each alternative along the process. It is intended that agents can be more dynamic and intelligent and can evaluate different contexts throughout the decision-making process. We believe agents will achieve better and consensual decisions more easily. We tested our model in three simulation environments with different complexity levels. Our model proved that agents that use it will obtain higher average consensus and satisfaction levels. Besides that, agents using this model will obtain those higher consensus and satisfaction levels in most of the times compared to agents that do not use it. © IBERAMIA and the authors.
