A novel score function based on the Poincaré metric is proposed and applied to a decision-making problem. Decision-making on Fuzzy Sets (FSs) has been considered due to the flexibility of the data, and it is applied to the decision-making. However, decisions with FSs are sometimes nondecisive even for different membership degrees. Hence, Intuitionistic Fuzzy Sets (IFSs) data is applied to design a score function for the decision-making with the Poincaré metric. This function is supported by the profound information of IFSs;IFSs include hesitation degree together with membership and non-membership degree. Hence, IFS membership and non-membership degree are expressed as two-dimensional vectors satisfying the Poincaré metric for simplification. At the same time, the proposed approach addresses the hesitation information in the IFS data. Next, a score function is proposed, constructed and provided. The proposed score function has a strict monotonic property and addresses the preference without resorting to the accuracy function. The strict monotonic property guarantees the preference of all attributes. Additionally, the existing problem of score function design in IFSs is addressed: they return zero scores even with different meanings for the same membership and non-membership degree. The advantages of the proposed score function over existing ones are demonstrated through illustrative examples. From the calculation results, the proposed decision score function discriminates between all candidates. Hence, the proposed research provides a solid foundation for the hesitation analysis on the decision-making problem. © 2024 The Authors.

Climate-induced disasters pose significant threats to human lives, infrastructure, and ecosystems. Deep learning techniques, combined with remote sensing, offer powerful tools for predicting, detecting, and mitigating the impacts of such disasters. This study presents a comprehensive interdisciplinary approach using a hybrid cascaded CNN-RNN model to perform spatio-temporal analysis, enhanced image segmentation with U-Net and SegNet architectures, and a hybrid CNN-LSTM-XGBoost ensemble for multi-hazard prediction. The proposed CNN-RNN model achieves an accuracy of 96.78%, significantly outperforming traditional models in predicting flood-prone areas, wildfires, and droughts. Key metrics such as Intersection over Union (IoU), precision, recall, and F1-scores are used to evaluate model performance, highlighting the model’s ability to accurately identify disaster-prone areas and improve disaster resilience. This research not only demonstrates the efficacy of deep learning for climate-induced disaster prediction but also paves the way for future integration of socio-economic data to refine disaster risk assessment. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

This paper considers the problem of learning safe policies in the context of reinforcement learning (RL). In particular, we consider the notion of probabilistic safety. This is, we aim to design policies that maintain the state of the system in a safe set with high probability. This notion differs from cumulative constraints often considered in the literature. The challenge of working with probabilistic safety is the lack of expressions for their gradients. Indeed, policy optimization algorithms rely on gradients of the objective function and the constraints. To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first one providing such explicit gradient expressions for probabilistic constraints. It is worth noting that the gradient of this family of constraints can be applied to various policy-based algorithms. We demonstrate empirically that it is possible to handle probabilistic constraints in a continuous navigation problem. © 2023 IEEE.

Based on the achievements regarding the 2020 targets, the Renewable Energy Directive established a new, higher target for 2030, reflecting a significant increase of interest for renewable energy sources (RES). As a result, various new software simulation packages, featuring models of RES, have been developed and being used in academia as well as in industry for research, educational or training purposes. In this paper Wind turbine (WT) characteristics and wind speed data obtained from a commissioned wind farm in Cyprus are used to implement a simulation model in two different software programs featuring RES simulation capabilities. Power System computer Aided Design (PSCAD) is used to investigate the electrical power output of a WT model, and KYAMOS software is used to investigate the modelling of the blades, the resulting primary torque and the resulting rotor rotational speed. The investigation result novelty is the establishment of the ability of the proposed, under development, software program to satisfy the three required characteristics. Therefore, Deviation from measured values of the turbine characteristics is observed for both programs, user interface and blade modelling, and the potential of integrating results of one software into the other is investigated. © 2023 IEEE.

This letter presents a novel approach for estimating interference distribution parameters in grant-free access networks using a model-based deep learning (DL) framework. Our method integrates the precision of analytical models with the adaptability of deep learning algorithms. Specifically, we employ an analytical model to generate labeled data, which enhances the deep learning model’s ability to estimate interference levels. Through extensive validation, we demonstrate that our approach accurately estimates interference across a broad range of scenarios, including operating regions not covered during the model’s training. Moreover, our method also estimates the spatial density of interfering nodes, making it a valuable tool for interference management in grant-free access networks. This methodology offers a robust solution for improving interference estimation accuracy, aiding decision-making at the Medium Access Control (MAC) and physical layers in grant-free access schemes. © 2012 IEEE.

Semivortex solitons and their excited states in spin-orbit-coupled binary bosonic condensates

It is known that two-dimensional two-component fundamental solitons of the semivortex (SV) type, with vorticities (s+,s−)=(0,1) in their components, are stable ground states (GSs) in the spin-orbit-coupled (SOC) binary Bose-Einstein condensate with the contact self-attraction acting in both components, in spite of the possibility of the critical collapse in the system. However, excited states (ESs) of the SV solitons, with the vorticity set (s+,s−)=(S+,S++1) and S+=1,2,3,..., are unstable in the same system. We construct ESs of SV solitons in the SOC system with opposite signs of the self-interaction in the two components. The main finding is stability of the ES-SV solitons, with the extra vorticity (at least) up to S+=6. The threshold value of the norm for the onset of the critical collapse, Nthr, in these excited states is higher than the commonly known critical value, Nc≈5.85, associated with the single-component Townes solitons, Nthr increasing with the growth of S+. A velocity interval for stable motion of the GS-SV solitons is found too. The results suggest a solution for the challenging problem of the creation of stable vortex solitons with high topological charges.

The Circuits and systems Society (CASS) places a strong emphasis on advancing education within its domain. Various educational programs and resources have contributed to the professional development of CASS members for more than 20 years now. A major transformation within the Society was started in 2021 with a clear vision to become a premier educational resource within circuits and systems areas of interest. This article provides a comprehensive review of flagship educational programs and past initiatives. Insights from the lessons learned and future trends in the education ecosystem guided society's strategies and frameworks for improving and developing new educational products and services. The benefits of learning with the CASS program are presented, highlighting the Society's deep commitment to serving the community at large in educational pursuit for years to come. © 2001-2012 IEEE.

Remote Aerial Vehicle Solutions for Weed Detection in Precision Agriculture

This study presents a novel Remote Aerial Vehicle-based approach for detecting pigweeds in soybean (Glycine max) fields using a combination of deep learning and advanced image processing techniques. A custom, high-resolution dataset comprising RGB (red, green, and blue) and multispectral images was collected from USDA operated fields and manually annotated for target pigweed detection. Beyond incorporating YOLOv8 variants for real-time weed classification, this study integrates a comprehensive image processing pipeline, incorporating global thresholding, k-means clustering, 3D surface mapping, and spectral signature analysis to enhance interpretability and detection accuracy. A comparative evaluation of YOLOv8 nano, small, medium, and large models, along with Faster R-CNN, confirmed YOLOv8’s balance between detection accuracy and real-time performance for deployment in precision agriculture. The YOLOv8 nano model emerged as the most balanced in terms of precision (75.6%), recall (81.7%), and mAP@0.5 (81.5%), demonstrating effective weed detection performance under real field conditions. In addition, quadrant-level weed coverage and spatial heatmaps were generated to support targeted interventions. This study advances the current state of RAV based weed detection by providing a field-ready, explainable, and resource-efficient solution, contributing to sustainable farming and data-driven weed management practices.

This paper studies the transfer reinforcement learning (RL) problem where multiple RL problems have different reward functions but share the same underlying transition *** this setting, the Q-function of each RL problem (task) can be decomposed into a successor feature (SF) and a reward mapping: the former characterizes the transition dynamics, and the latter characterizes the task-specific reward *** Q-function decomposition, coupled with a policy improvement operator known as generalized policy improvement (GPI), reduces the sample complexity of finding the optimal Q-function, and thus the SF & GPI framework exhibits promising empirical performance compared to traditional RL methods like ***, its theoretical foundations remain largely unestablished, especially when learning the successor features using deep neural networks (SF-DQN).This paper studies the provable knowledge transfer using SFs-DQN in transfer RL *** establish the first convergence analysis with provable generalization guarantees for SF-DQN with *** theory reveals that SF-DQN with GPI outperforms conventional RL approaches, such as deep Q-network, in terms of both faster convergence rate and better *** experiments on real and synthetic RL tasks support the superior performance of SF-DQN & GPI, aligning with our theoretical findings. Swallowing assessment is a crucial task to reveal swallowing abnormalities. There are multiple modalities to analyze swallowing kinematics, such as videofluoroscopic swallow studies (VFSS), which is the gold standard method, and high-resolution cervical auscultation (HRCA), which is a noninvasive technique that uses a triaxial accelerometer attached to the patient's neck. Deep learning models play an essential role in data driven analysis of swallowing landmarks using VFSS and/or HRCA as input data. Most of these models utilize convolutional and recurrent neural networks. Here, we investigate the ability of transformers to analyze swallowing kinematics;specifically upper esophageal sphincter opening and laryngeal vestibule closure using HRCA signals. We tested the model using an independent test dataset to assess the generalizability of the proposed network. The proposed network achieved an average detection accuracy higher than 90% and 85% for both segmentation tasks, which outperform the hybrid neural networks from the literature, and the model obtained high-performance measures for the independent dataset, showing the transformers' ability to generalize on unseen data. © 2024 IEEE.
