Project funded by the Division of engineering Education and centers (EEC) Broadening participation in engineering is critical given the gap between the nation's need for engineering graduates and its production of them. Efforts to spark interest in engineering among PreK-12 students have increased substantially in recent years as a result. However, past research has demonstrated that interest is not always sufficient to help students pursue engineering majors, particularly for rural students. In many rural communities, influential adults (family, friends, teachers) are often the primary influence on career choice, while factors such as community values, lack of social and cultural capital, limited course availability, and inadequate financial resources act as potential barriers. To account for these contextual factors, this project shifts the focus from individual students to the communities to understand how key stakeholders and organizations support engineering as a major choice and addresses the following questions: RQ1. What do current undergraduate engineering students who graduated from rural high schools describe as influences on their choice to attend college and pursue engineering as a post-secondary major? RQ2. How does the college choice process differ for rural students who enrolled in a 4-year university immediately after graduating from high school and those who transferred from a 2-year institution? RQ3. How do community members describe the resources that serve as key supports as well as the barriers that hinder support in their community? RQ4. What strategies do community members perceive their community should implement to enhance their ability to support engineering as a potential career choice? RQ5. How are these supports transferable or adaptable by other schools? What community-level factors support or inhibit transfer and adaptation? Many topics in most engineering curricula are taught using mathematics and mathematical models. Knowledge of the prerequisite background in mathematics is therefore necessary for students to learn such topics. In recent years, there has been a growing concern among educators about the competence of incoming freshmen in mathematics. Most engineering educators believe that deficiencies in students' mathematics backgrounds are a major impediment to learning and may be the cause of an unacceptable high attrition rate. To remedy this problem, we need to study the underlying causes of these deficiencies in some detail. This paper seeks to test the hypothesis that one of the major causes for the problems that some students have with learning mathematics is attitude towards the subject It is well known that attitude significantly affects learning in general. However, surprisingly few results are available on the impact of attitude toward mathematics on engineering education. We will investigate the link between attitude and competence in mathematics for engineering freshmen. For this purpose, we have designed an attitude assessment tool that was administered to engineering freshmen enrolled in ENGR 101 Introduction to engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno. The paper will present the results of the survey together with a statistical analysis to assess the importance of attitude toward mathematics learning as an obstacle in engineering education.

With the continuous improvement of university-enterprise cooperation, it is possible to solve the shortcomings in the traditional college graduate training process by means of the university-enterprise cooperation training(UECT in short) model. In order to effectively promote the development of UECT for graduate students, this paper firstly combs the problems existing in the traditional mode of graduate training, then reviews the related research progress and practice at home and abroad in detail, and on this basis, summarizes the advantages of UECT for graduate students. Combining with the shortcomings of the traditional postgraduate training in universities and the advantages of the joint training of schools and enterprises, we put the UECT into practice and gained experience. Through the selection of students to carry out joint training in Aliyun, it effectively assisted the design and upgrading of Aliyun's "Mountains Moving" system and the smooth operation of the "Double Eleventh" system. Finally, based on the previous research foundation and the actual needs of universities, local enterprises and graduate training work, this paper gives specific suggestions from five aspects: the definition of intellectual property ownership, cooperative training team building model, topic selection, daily management mechanism and confidentiality *** this paper, we describe the formatting guidelines for ACM SIG Proceedings.

We have designed and implemented game-themed programming assignment modules targeted specifically for adoption in existing introductory programming classes. These assignments are self-contained, so that faculty members with no background in graphics/gaming can selectively pick and choose a subset to combine with their own assignments in existing classes. This paper begins with a survey of previous results, followed by a description of the game-themed assignment modules. The paper then focuses on our efforts in assessing the assignments: including details of the procedures and instruments for evaluating student achievement of learning outcomes and attitudes towards the assignments, as well as the extra effort required of faculty to adopt the assignments in existing clases. In this work-in-progress research paper, we explore the task choice of students in first-year, team-based engineering design project courses, with the goal of gaining insight on how to best structure and scaffold team projects so that all students have a positive, effective experience. What factors affect student task choice? Do students select tasks that they feel the most confident about completing, or do they challenge themselves to learn new skills? Do gender or team dynamics or self-imposed roles affect how students participate? If students are asked to develop individual learning goals for the project, does that influence the activities that they engage in, and does articulating learning goals lead to a more beneficial project experience? We are using a mixed-methods approach to investigate the experiences of a small cohort of students engaged in a first-year design project, in order to better understand how students choose to undertake different tasks in team projects.

Quality processes are an important part of any business. The introduction of quality management systems in the workplace offers many benefits for organizations who wish to remain competitive. Online presentation of quality management concepts offers an efficient and cost effective delivery method for workplace learning. However, adult learners often do not have the same level of comfort with online educational programs as college-aged students. Adult learners also have other special needs that must be considered when developing educational material for the workplace.

One goal of engineering education is to prepare students for professional engineering practice. Assessing such preparedness can be difficult. At the center for engineering learning and teaching, we have been exploring the development of an authentic assessment task in Civil and Environmental engineering-the professional advice task. We have been using this task to gain insight into students' preparedness relative to ABET outcomes B (data analysis) and D (teamwork), as well as their preparedness more broadly (i.e., when they generate the list of issues, how broad are these issues). However, the format of the task is sufficiently generic that it could be used for almost any ABET outcome.

engineering design is a necessary skill for all graduating engineers. As educators, we must develop ways to represent engineering design behavior that allow us to assess alternative methods of teaching design. Using verbal protocol analysis, we are able to document and analyze student design processes. When analyzed, design process data reveal differences in student approaches and allow researchers to make comparisons across students. Here, we present alternative methods of displaying design process data from verbal protocols and discuss the types of analyses that are possible from each representation.

There is great interest in understanding and influencing students' attraction to computing-related majors. This qualitative study is based on interviews with 31 students enrolled in introductory programming courses at two public universities in the United States. This paper presents a model of five factors that influence student decisions to major in CS and elaborates on our grounded theory analysis of one of these factors: how students assess their CS-related ability. We describe how students measure their ability in terms of speed, grades, and previous experience and how students make interpretations and decisions based upon these measurements. We found that students' interpretations were influenced by experiences in their environments and beliefs about ability as being fixed or malleable. © 2011 ACM.
