We report the complete measurement of the spectral properties of photon pairs generated via spontaneous parametric down-conversion. The measurements, which include not only single-photon spectra, but also two-photon joint spectra, were performed for both cw and ultrafast pumping configurations. In agreement with theoretical predictions, the spectra for the ultrafast pumped case reveal asymmetries not present with cw pumping.

We report an experimental observation of correlated-photon statistics using a single detector. The usual coincidence dip in a two-photon polarization interferometer is accompanied by a dip in single-photon detection rates. Surprisingly, a dip in the singles rate is also observed when the interferometer is aligned for a coincidence peak, or anti-dip. This effect is explained by taking into account all possible photon number states that reach the detector, rather than considering just the state post-selected by the coincidence measurement.

We introduce a new concept of management system based on the scalable communication framework effectively working on mixture of several complex layers including private networks. Overlay network architecture with virtual IP addressing has been applied to identify nodes uniquely. Inter-node communication on different private networks is ensured by defined complex network protocol (CNP). We also develop a communication middleware for the cluster management system called SARK (scalable architecture routing kernel). The total elapsed time for gathering all information and its system overhead are measured. The scalability test performed on the cluster of clusters which contains 100 nodes, and shows our proposed work would be scalable in the cluster of 4,000 nodes. Therefore, our scalable communication framework would be considered as a suitable method for monitoring and controlling a large cluster system on mixture of several complex network layers

To generate a proper Korean predicate, a natural modal expression is the most important factor for a machine translation (MT) system. Tense, aspect, mood, negation, and voice are the major constituents related to modal expression. The linguistic encoding of a modal expression is quite different between Chinese and Korean in terms of linguistic typology and genealogy. In this paper, a new applicable categorization of Korean modality system viz. tense, aspect, mood, negation, and voice, will be proposed through a contrastive analysis of Chinese and Korean from the viewpoint of a practical MT system. In order to precisely determine the modal expression, effective feature selection frameworks for Chinese are presented with a variety of machine learning methods. As a result, our proposed approach achieved an accuracy of 83.10%.

Sequences that are present in a given species or strain while absent from or different in any other organisms can be used to distinguish the target organism from other related or un-related species. Such DNA signatures are particularly important for the identification of genetic source of drug resistance of a strain or for the detection of organisms that can be used as biological agents in warfare or terrorism. Most approaches used to find DNA signatures are laboratory based, require a great deal of effort and can only distinguish between two organisms at a time. We propose a more efficient and cost-effective bioinformatics approach that allows identification of genomic fingerprints for a target organism. We validated our approach using a custom microarray, using sequences identified as DNA fingerprints of Bacillus anthracis. Hybridization results showed that the sequences found using our algorithm were truly unique to B. anthracis and were able to distinguish B. anthracis from its close relatives B. cereus and B. thuringiensis.
