We apply optimal control theory to substantially reduce transient times for transitions between in-phase and out-of-phase states in coupled solid-state lasers. The control is a time-varying optical field that is injected into the cavities of each laser. We have analytically derived the optimal control and numerically solved the optimality system. Numerical simulations indicate that transient times can be significantly reduced upon increasing the injection strength very briefly.

In this paper, we will describe a Korean transliterated foreign word extraction algorithm. In the proposed method, we reformulate the foreign word extraction problem as a syllable-tagging problem such that each syllable is tagged with a foreign syllable tag or a pure Korean syllable tag. Syllable sequences of Korean strings are modelled by Hidden Markov Model whose state represents a character with binary marking to indicate whether the syllable is part of a transliterated foreign word or not. The proposed method extracts a transliterated foreign word with high recall rate and precision rate. Moreover, our method shows good performance even with small-sized training corpora.

Informal presentations are a lightweight means for fast and convenient communication of ideas. People communicate their ideas to others on paper and whiteboards, which afford fluid sketching of graphs, words and other expressive symbols. Unlike existing authoring tools that are designed for formal presentations, we created SketchPoint to help presenters design informal presentations via freeform sketching. In SketchPoint, presenters can quickly author presentations by sketching slide content, overall hierarchical structures and hyperlinks. To facilitate the transition from idea capture to communication, a note-taking workspace was built for accumulating ideas and sketching presentation outlines. Informal feedback showed that SketchPoint is a promising tool for idea communication. Copyright 2003 ACM.

Skillful motor control by humans is achieved by the appropriate motor commands generating from the central nervous system. An internal model in the cerebellum may contribute to the realization of accurate motor control. In this work, a model of human motor control of manual tracking to move a visible target was constructed based on experimental data from a visual tracking test with normal healthy adults and with patients with cerebellar ataxia. A compensation method to improve the motor function of patients was also developed by using the model.

Results are reported concerning the transition to chaos in random dynamical systems. In particular, situations are considered where a periodic attractor coexists with a nonattracting chaotic saddle, which can be expected in any periodic window of a nonlinear dynamical system. Under noise, the asymptotic attractor of the system can become chaotic, as characterized by the appearance of a positive Lyapunov exponent. Generic features of the transition include the following: (1) the noisy chaotic attractor is necessarily nonhyperbolic as there are periodic orbits embedded in it with distinct numbers of unstable directions (unstable dimension variability), and this nonhyperbolicity develops as soon as the attractor becomes chaotic; (2) for systems described by differential equations, the unstable dimension variability destroys the neutral direction of the flow in the sense that there is no longer a zero Lyapunov exponent after the noisy attractor becomes chaotic; and (3) the largest Lyapunov exponent becomes positive from zero in a continuous manner, and its scaling with the variation of the noise amplitude is algebraic. Formulas for the scaling exponent are derived in all dimensions. Numerical support using both low- and high-dimensional systems is provided.

A new procedure for registering brain MRI from different individuals with large anatomical differences is presented, and applied to the registration of images of patients with a brain tumor with an atlas. The key steps are the implantation of a synthetic tumor in the atlas and a novel robust image registration technique. Application of this procedure to the determination of abnormalities in the electrical activity of patients with brain tumors is presented as well.
