Despite the increased availability of affordable ATM hardware, the scientific research community has often found it difficult to engage in much needed basic research in the areas of ATM protocol design and network performance optimization. We believe that one major cause for this has been the absence of affordable, publicly available source-level implementations of the ATM switch protocol stack. The PNNI routing and simulation toolkit (PRouST) attempts to remedy this. PRouST is a freely distributed, extensible environment for research and development in ATM switch signaling and routing. PRouST includes a complete source-level release of the ATM switch PNNI protocol stack, conformant to version 1.0 of the ATM Forum specification. It is our hope that PRouST will serve as the starting point for bold new initiatives in research and development for ATM technologies. We describe the design of PRouST and the features it supports.

It is commonly believed that the dynamics responsible for low-frequency fluctuations (LFF’s) in external cavity semiconductor lasers is stochastic or chaotic. A common approach to address the origin of LFF’s is to investigate the dynamical behavior of, and the interaction among, various external cavity modes in the Lang-Kobayashi (LK) paradigm. In this paper, we propose a framework for understanding of the LFFs based on a different set of fundamental solutions of the LK equations, which are periodic or quasiperiodic, and which are characterized by a sequence of time-locked pulses with slowly varying magnitude. We present numerical evidence and heuristic arguments, indicating that the dynamics of LFF’s emerges as a result of quasiperiodic bifurcations from these solutions as the pumping current increases. Regular periodic solutions can actually be observed when (1) the feedback level is moderate, (2) pumping current is below solitary threshold, and (3) the linewidth enhancement factor is relatively large.

This paper describes a TV program generation system using digest video scenes that are retrieved from video streams with the program indexes. The key features of the system are: (1) TV programs can be dynamically generated from digest video scenes selected by user preference. (2) Directions can be added using a happiness or sadness level based on the user preferences. (3) Personalized TV programs for an individual viewer can be made. The procedures taken by the system are as follows: (1) Conjunctive expressions between scenes are automatically generated; (2) Emotional expressions are automatically generated by user preference; (3) TV program metaphors are defined; (4) Direction templates corresponding to the metaphors are defined; (5) These expressions and definitions are coded using a markup language, and (6) Contents such as virtual characters and movies are synchronized. The resultant program can be shown on a TV set.

For a cleaner environment and efficient operation, vehicles rely more and more heavily on electrical power generation for success, and the advent of the hybrid electric vehicle has emphasized the need to re-examine efficient, compact generators for use in vehicle propulsion. Crankless linear engines coupled to linear alternators have gained recent visibility and West Virginia University (WVU) has already enjoyed success in the research of spark-ignited and compression ignition linear engines coupled to permanent magnet alternators. This research will provide an integrated design approach for the alternator which accounts for the characteristics of the engine used as the prime mover and the interactions between the engine and the alternator.

This paper proposes a self-organizing control strategy of a signal network for urban traffic flows. The signal network is described using a system of nonlinear oscillators with the nearest neighborhood coupling. The natural frequency, split and coupling constants of the signals are adjusted dynamically according to local information of traffic flows so that the desired network offset patterns are self-organized through mutual entrainment. We provide a preliminary analysis of the coupled oscillator system. Numerical simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method under dynamical environmental changes.

Polymeric nanosphere formed from temperature-responsive polymer composed of (N,N-dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate and ethyl acrylamide

A nanosphere was formed from a temperature-responsive random copolymer of ( N , N -dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) and ethyl acrylamide (EAAm) without a crosslinker. When the copolymerization was performed in a water/ethanol solvent mixture (90/10 v/v %) above the lower critical-solution temperature of poly(DMAEMA- co -EAAm), the nanosphere was formed with the propagation of copolymerization. Atomic force microscopy analysis and dynamic light scattering both showed the formation of nanosphere and the size was decreased as the EAAm content increased in the copolymer. To illuminate this nanosphere formation phenomena, molecular dynamic simulations were performed with model polymer solutions. According to the analysis of the simulation trajectory, the ethyl groups of ethanol bind to the hydrophobic sites of poly(DMAEMA) or poly(DMAEMA- co -EAAm), and water molecules can bind preferentially to CO groups that are abundant on the surface of the core, which is composed of oligomer and ethanol. We considers the identification of a parametrized time-invariant nonlinear plant using a smooth model such as a sigmoid nonlinear network. There is measurement noise associated with the plant parameters as well as with its input and output. An initial plant model is obtained by utilizing the domain-specific knowledge in terms of the fundamental plant equations, which in general only partially capture the plant dynamics. Once the initial model is fixed, measurements are collected on the plant parameters and input/output. We show that the independently and identically distributed (iid) measurements can be fused with the initial plant model by recomputing the parameters. The updated parameters yield a more accurate identifier of the original plant both in the parameter space and the input/output space. The method is based on empirical versions of the closed-form solutions derived in the nuclear engineering literature for an ideal version of the problem based on sensitivity analysis. We show the asymptotic convergence of our computational procedure as well as derive its finite sample results. We illustrate the method using an identifier based on a sigmoid feedforward neural network. © 2000 Int. Soc. Inf. Fusion.

We considers a physical system described by a set of parameters. Each parameter is either measured by a number of sensors or estimated by a set of computer programs that use sensor measurements. As a result, the resultant parameter values could be widely varying. We propose a fusion method that combines the measurements and estimators based on the physical laws that relate the parameters. In comparison with the traditional fusion problems, there is no training set that provides the actual parameter values. Furthermore, since every parameter is measured or estimated, there are no parameters whose actual values are known. We propose a fuser based on the least violation of the physical laws that relate the parameters. Under certain smoothness conditions on the physical law, we show the asymptotic convergence of our method, and also derive distribution-free performance bounds based on finite samples. We illustrate the effectiveness of this method for a practical problem of fusing well-log data in methane hydrate exploration. For this problem, the data fusion method resulted in an order-of-magnitude improvement in the accuracy compared to the best set of estimators for the key parameter of porosity. © 2000 Int. Soc. Inf. Utilization of root cause failure analysis in the investigation of marine deck fitting failures

作者： Huff, DS Lynaugh, KM David S. Huff graduated from the University of Maryland with a B.S.M.E. in 1972 and a M.S. in technology management in 1995. Prior to government service he worked for Newport News Shipbuilding as a fluid systems engineer and for Gibbs & Cox as a project engineer. Mr. Huff entered government service in 1977 with the Military Sealift Command Engineering Operations Division then as a construction representative and finally as deputy director ship design and construction. He then moved to NAVSEA in 1989 as assistant project manager on the conversion of AO-177 oilers to AO (JUMBO). From 1993 through 2000 he was assistant project manager for the construction of T-AKR-300 Class of Strategic Sealift RO/RO ships at Avondale. Currently Mr. Huff is manager of the Advanced Projects Group within the PEO EXW Auxiliary Boats and Crafts Program Office. Kevin M. Lynaugh obtained his naval architecture and marine engineering degree from University of California Berkeley in 1984. He obtained his Master's degree in science and engineering from The Johns Hopkins University in 1997 with a dual major in program management and operations management. He has been with NAVSEA Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division for over 16 years. He spent four years with the Hydromechanics Division computerizing the Model Design Group two years with the Large Cavitation Channel Project as a project engineer six years with the Ship Building Technologies Department as a task area manager managing research programs the past 3 ½ years with the Strategic Sealift Program as the ship design manager for Avondale's new con-struction and as the deputy assistant program manager for post delivery and NASSCO's new construction. Currently Mr. Lynaugh is the on-site ship design manager for LHD-8 at Ingalls Shipyard in Pascagoula Mississippi.

Cracking was discovered in the openings of cargo deck tie down fittings on ships under construction. There was a distinct possibility that these cracks could propagate through the fittings and into the strength deck plating, affecting the ships hull integrity. With more than 14,000 fittings installed on each ship, the appearance of approximately 400 cracks at the mid-ship area of the main and lower decks raised production and operational concerns. This paper will discus the successful application of a Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) methodology employed by a Corrective Action Team (CAT) establish to solve the problem. Through their efforts and the systematic application of RCFA, various failure hypotheses were validated or discounted and consensus was achieved on the appropriate corrective action.

In this paper, we propose a multi-channel dissemination system with a clustering mechanism and a presentation technique for time- series on-line news articles on the Internet. We describe a detecting technique for articles whose topics are the same. These articles are called follow-up articles. In addition, we describe a calculating method for confidence level and scoop level assigned to news articles using temporal information. Furthermore we describe a prototype system called Carthage based on our proposed method. The system reconstructs all of the ar¬ticles to follow-up article groups and distributes the article group with several user interfaces. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2000.
