The last two decades has seen quantum thermodynamics become a well established field of research in its own right. In that time, it has demonstrated a remarkably broad applicability, ranging from providing foundational advances in the understanding of how thermodynamic principles apply at the nano-scale and in the presence of quantum coherence, to providing a guiding framework for the development of efficient quantum devices. Exquisite levels of control have allowed state-of-the-art experimental platforms to explore energetics and thermodynamics at the smallest scales which has in turn helped to drive theoretical advances. This Roadmap provides an overview of the recent developments across many of the field’s sub-disciplines, assessing the key challenges and future prospects, providing a guide for its near term progress. This paper proposes a hybrid secondary control architecture for microgrids with AC-coupled droop-controlled units, based on both centralised and distributed control principles. The proposed secondary control is based on a multi-agent system (MAS), complemented by a microgrid centralised controller (MGCC). The system is able to adjust the droop curves dynamically in order to achieve voltage/frequency restoration as well as active/reactive power optimal allocation, based on the actual status of the controllable units, in particular, the state-of-charge of batteries and maximum power point of photovoltaics. The distributed nature of the agents is also fully exploited because the proposed framework retains operability even under fault on secondary MGCC. To evaluate the proposed framework, a scenario-based performance analysis has been tested over a simulated AC islanded microgrid, where communication from the MGCC is suddenly interrupted and the MAS is required to reconfigure in order to maintain the same control objectives. MATLAB/Simulink simulations have been realised using detailed physical form models for a small-scale microgrid, while the implementation of the MGCC and MAS is accomplished through Java Agent Development (JADE) framework.

Research software has become a central asset in academic research. It optimizes existing and enables new research methods, implements and embeds research knowledge, and constitutes an essential research product in itself. Research software must be sustainable in order to understand, replicate, reproduce, and build upon existing research or conduct new research effectively. In other words, software must be available, discoverable, usable, and adaptable to new needs, both now and in the future. Research software therefore requires an environment that supports sustainability. Hence, a change is needed in the way research software development and maintenance are currently motivated, incentivized, funded, structurally and infrastructurally supported, and legally treated. Failing to do so will threaten the quality and validity of research. In this paper, we identify challenges for research software sustainability in Germany and beyond, in terms of motivation, selection, research software engineering personnel, funding, infrastructure, and legal aspects. Besides researchers, we specifically address political and academic decision-makers to increase awareness of the importance and needs of sustainable research software practices. In particular, we recommend strategies and measures to create an environment for sustainable research software, with the ultimate goal to ensure that software-driven research is valid, reproducible and sustainable, and that software is recognized as a first class citizen in research. Defining quantum dots in semiconductor based heterostructures is an essential step in initializing solid-state qubits. With growing device complexity and increasing number of functional devices required for measurements, a manual approach to finding suitable gate voltages to confine electrons electrostatically is impractical. Here, we implement a two-stage device characterization and dot-tuning process which first determines whether devices are functional and then attempts to tune the functional devices to the single or double quantum dot regime. We show that automating well established manual tuning procedures and replacing the experimenter's decisions by supervised machine learning is sufficient to tune double quantum dots in multiple devices without pre-measured input or manual intervention. The quality of measurement results and charge states are assessed by four binary classifiers trained with experimental data, reflecting real device behaviour. We compare and optimize eight models and different data preprocessing techniques for each of the classifiers to achieve reliable autonomous tuning, an essential step towards scalable quantum systems in quantum dot based qubit architectures. A new hybrid structure of multilevel inverter topology is recommended in this paper. It is designed with the aim of reducing the number of components with more number of levels at the output. Proposed topology uses three dc voltage sources along with 10 power semiconductor devices to achieve 13 levels at the output. A comparative study is given with other similar topologies which proves the lower number of components. In order to achieve good-quality output voltage, selective harmonic elimination technique is used with the elimination of lower order harmonics. Different simulation results have been provided to validate the proposed topology.
