Models of quantum systems on curved space-times lack sufficient experimental verification. Some speculative theories suggest that quantum properties, such as entanglement, may exhibit entirely different behavior to purely classical systems. By measuring this effect or lack thereof, we can test the hypotheses behind several such models. For instance, as predicted by Ralph and coworkers [T C Ralph, G J Milburn, and T Downes, Phys. Rev. A, 79(2):22121, 2009;T C Ralph and J Pienaar, New Journal of Physics, 16(8):85008, 2014], a bipartite entangled system could decohere if each particle traversed through a different gravitational field gradient. We propose to study this effect in a ground to space uplink scenario. We extend the above theoretical predictions of Ralph and coworkers and discuss the scientific consequences of detecting/failing to detect the predicted gravitational decoherence. We present a detailed mission design of the European Space Agency's (ESA) Space QUEST (Space - Quantum Entanglement Space Test) mission, and study the feasibility of the mission scheme. Investigation of stimulated brillouin scattering effect on different modulation formats

In this study, the impact of Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS) and effective core area and the Brillouin gain coefficient on On-Off Key (OOK) and phase modulation formats is investigated. In comparison with OOK formats, Return to Zero-Differential Phase Shift Keying (RZ-DPSK) revealed more robustness against the SBS effect with regards to jitter. The generated jitter due to power increment from 0 to 6 dBm was measured. The results show 0.1232, 0.1054, 0.0683 and 0.0544 bit period jitter for NRZ-OOK, RZ-OOK 0.5, NRZ-DPSK and RZ DPSK respectively. Furthermore, it is shown that SBS effect changes the behavior of system with regards to bit rate variation. It is shown that lower bit rate, does not guarantee higher performance. For instance, while the log BER at 2 Gb/sec is -11 for RZ-OOK 0.5, -9 for CSRZ,-10 for NRZ-DPSK and -16 for RZ-DPSK, at 8 Gb/sec they hit a peak with -16, -20, -21 and -36, respectively. © Maxwell Scientific Organization, 2014.

A new algorithm is proposed for computing locally the linearizing output of single-input and multi-input nonlinear affine system. The algorithm modifies the extended Goursat normal form to iteratively obtain the successive integrations of one dimensional distributions of control system. The algorithm takes ideas from both vector field approach of feedback linearization and exterior differential system tools, hence the name Blended Algorithm. The proposed algorithm leads to a tower like structure depending upon the number of system inputs. Within individual tower, the coordinates are reduced one by one by finding the annihilators of vector fields at each step. The process is repeated till the single vector field is obtained for exact linearizable system. The scheme exhibits reduced computational complexity over the existing methods and can be extended to address feedback linearization of various class of control systems. © IFAC.

Solid-state qubits have recently advanced to the level that enables them, in principle, to be scaled up into fault-tolerant quantum computers. As these physical qubits continue to advance, meeting the challenge of realizing a quantum machine will also require the development of new supporting devices and control architectures with complexity far beyond the systems used in today’s few-qubit experiments. Here, we report a microarchitecture for controlling and reading out qubits during the execution of a quantum algorithm such as an error-correcting code. We demonstrate the basic principles of this architecture using a cryogenic switch matrix implemented via high-electron-mobility transistors and a new kind of semiconductor device based on gate-switchable capacitance. The switch matrix is used to route microwave waveforms to qubits under the control of a field-programmable gate array, also operating at cryogenic temperatures. Taken together, these results suggest a viable approach for controlling large-scale quantum systems using semiconductor technology.

An integrated array of parallel-plate resonators for microfluidic sensing is proposed. The numerical method used for the analysis of this array and the related design procedure are described. It is demonstrated that the array can be designed to show a high quality factor. Moreover, sensitivity of the proposed sensor is higher than 200 GHz/RIU for a wide range of refractive indices. The proposed sensor lends itself to real-time flow monitoring applications where high sensitivity is required. © 2014 IEEE.

Using social media to perform local influenza surveillance in an inner-city hospital: A retrospective observational study

Background: Public health officials and policy makers in the United States expend significant resources at the national, state, county, and city levels to measure the rate of influenza infection. These individuals rely on influenza infection rate information to make important decisions during the course of an influenza season driving vaccination campaigns, clinical guidelines, and medical staffing. Web and social media data sources have emerged as attractive alternatives to supplement existing practices. While traditional surveillance methods take 1-2 weeks, and significant labor, to produce an infection estimate in each locale, web and social media data are available in near real-time for a broad range of locations. Objective: The objective of this study was to analyze the efficacy of flu surveillance from combining data from the websites Google Flu Trends and HealthTweets at the local level. We considered both emergency department influenza-like illness cases and laboratory-confirmed influenza cases for a single hospital in the City of Baltimore. Methods: This was a retrospective observational study comparing estimates of influenza activity of Google Flu Trends and Twitter to actual counts of individuals with laboratory-confirmed influenza, and counts of individuals presenting to the emergency department with influenza-like illness cases. Data were collected from November 20, 2011 through March 16, 2014. Each parameter was evaluated on the municipal, regional, and national scale. We examined the utility of social media data for tracking actual influenza infection at the municipal, state, and national levels. Specifically, we compared the efficacy of Twitter and Google Flu Trends data. Results: We found that municipal-level Twitter data was more effective than regional and national data when tracking actual influenza infection rates in a Baltimore inner-city hospital. Emotional neural network (ENN) is a recently developed methodology that uses simulated emotions aiding its learning process. ENN is motivated by neurophysiological knowledge of the human's emotional brain. In this paper, ENNs are developed and examined for prediction tasks. Genetic algorithm is applied for optimal tuning of crisp numerical parameters of ENN. The performance of the proposed ENN is examined using data sets for a couple of synthetic (with constant and variable noise) and real world (wind farm power generation data) case studies. A traditional artificial neural network (ANN) is also implemented for comparison purposes. Numerical results indicate the superiority of ENN over ANN in terms of accuracy and stability. © 2014 IEEE.

This paper describes a new, open-source Matlab toolbox, which can be used to directly build realistic, complex geometrical models of irregular biological cell shapes and organelles based on user definitions on single two-dimensional micrographs. The main advantages are flexibility and versatility as needed for irregular cell shape modeling for computational bioelectrical and biomechanical studies, which are not met in conventional computer modeling tools. The algorithms, results and applications are briefly described. Specifically as shown, the software can be used to study the effects of cell shape on local absorption and microthermal effects under electrical stimulation.
