We earlier introduced a novel framework for realization of Adaptive Autonomy (AA) in human-automation interaction (HAI). This study presents an expert system for realization of AA, using Support Vector Machine (SVM), referred to as Adaptive Autonomy Support Vector Machine Expert System (AASVMES). The proposed system prescribes proper Levels of Automation (LOAs) for various environmental conditions, here modeled as Performance Shaping Factors (PSFs), based on the extracted rules from the experts' judgments. SVM is used as an expert system inference engine. The practical list of PSFs and the judgments of GTEDC's (the Greater Tehran Electric Distribution Company) experts are used as expert system database. The results of implemented AASVMES in response to GTEDC's network are evaluated against the GTEDC experts' judgment. Evaluations show that AASVMES has the ability to predict the proper LOA for GTEDC's Utility Management Automation (UMA) system, which changes in relevance to the changes in PSFs; thus providing an adaptive LOA scheme for UMA.

Background: In bioinformatics projects, scientific workflow systems are widely used to manage computational procedures. Full-featured workflow systems have been proposed to fulfil the demand for workflow management. However, such systems tend to be over-weighted for actual bioinformatics practices. We realize that quick deployment of cutting-edge software implementing advanced algorithms and data formats, and continuous adaptation to changes in computational resources and the environment are often prioritized in scientific workflow management. These features have a greater affinity with the agile software development method through iterative development phases after trial and error. Here, we show the application of a scientific workflow system Pwrake to bioinformatics workflows. Pwrake is a parallel workflow extension of Ruby's standard build tool Rake, the flexibility of which has been demonstrated in the astronomy domain. Therefore, we hypothesize that Pwrake also has advantages in actual bioinformatics workflows. Findings. We implemented the Pwrake workflows to process next generation sequencing data using the Genomic Analysis Toolkit (GATK) and Dindel. GATK and Dindel workflows are typical examples of sequential and parallel workflows, respectively. We found that in practice, actual scientific workflow development iterates over two phases, the workflow definition phase and the parameter adjustment phase. We introduced separate workflow definitions to help focus on each of the two developmental phases, as well as helper methods to simplify the descriptions. This approach increased iterative development efficiency. Moreover, we implemented combined workflows to demonstrate modularity of the GATK and Dindel workflows. Conclusions: Pwrake enables agile management of scientific workflows in the bioinformatics domain. Ultra-wideband (UWB) technology is a new concept in wireless short-range communication. It has numerous advantages that are resulted in producing different new products in various applications. This technology uses very short duration pulses hence occupies very large transmission bandwidth. This phenomenon may cause harmful interference in the existing wireless devices. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the effective parameters in ultra-wideband communication for indoor short-range devices. In this regard, two commercial UWB devices are utilized and effects of these devices in different experimental configurations are investigated. Three configurations including the effects of distance, narrowband spectrum, and another UWB device on bit error rate performance are evaluated. The results of the performed experiments showed the stability and amenability of the UWB technology to be used in multiple UWB devices.

Choosing Intrusion Detection systems (IDSs) is difficult owing to the availability of different IDS techniques, the nature of attacks and the inability of IDS techniques to guarantee total security. The use of Intrusion Prevention systems (IPSs) as a first line of defence does not prevent all attacks, so IDSs are needed as a second line of defence. Anomaly and signature-based techniques are the main approaches employed by IDSs. This new IDS technique is based on two main anomaly detection techniques: statistical and predictive pattern generation techniques. This IDS will detect both known and unknown attacks using signature-based and anomaly techniques. © 2011 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

Using energy-filtered transmission electron microscopy we measured surface-plasmon resonances of gold nanoplatelets with different shapes and edge lengths at high spatial resolution. We find equidistant maxima of the energy-loss probability along the platelet edges. The plasmon dispersion of the different geometries is very similar, i.e., hardly dependent on specimen shape. The experimental results are verified by means of finite-difference time-domain calculations which reveal the presence of wedge-plasmon polaritons propagating along the platelet edges. At platelet corners, apart from radiative losses, wedge-plasmon polaritons are partially reflected or transmitted to neighboring edges. The interference of all these contributions leads to the observed plasmon resonance modes. This is an essential step towards a thorough understanding of plasmon eigenmodes in prismatic nanoplatelets.

A problem of state feedback stabilization of discrete-time stochastic processes under Markovian switching and random diffusion (noise) is considered. The jump Markovian switching is modeled by a discrete-time Markov chain. The control input is simultaneously applied to both the rate vector and the diffusion term. Sufficient conditions based on linear matrix inequalities (LMI's) for stochastic stability is obtained. The robustness results of such stability concept against all admissible uncertainties are also investigated. An example is given to demonstrate the obtained results. © 2010 AACC.

Recently, a computationally efficient method was developed to deal with stability of a control system where the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial are polynomially dependent on the parameters of interest. In this paper, we extend this result to a family of complex polynomials which in turn solves some important performance attainment problems. Batch-fabrication of eyeball-like spherical micro-lens not only reduces micro assembly cost, but also replaces conventional ball-lenses or costly GRINs (Gradient Reflective Index) without sacrificing performance. Compared to the conventional micro-lenses made in a half-spherical geometry, the eyeball-like micro-lens is a sphere, which allows focusing light in all directions on the substrate surface, thus providing application flexibility for optical applications. The current eyeball-like spherical micro-lens is made using photoresist SU-8. This work develops a batch process at low temperature by spin-coating SU-8 on a surface of silicon wafer. The SU-8 thick film is patterned by UV lithography to form an array of holes for holding eyeball-like spherical micro-lens. The fabrication process employs bulk micromachining to fabricate an array of nozzles on the silicon wafer. Next, this process pours viscous SU-8 into the cavity of silicon wafer and presses it through the nozzle before reflow. The eyeball-like spherical micro-balls form by balancing between surface tension and cohesion. Varying the amount of SU-8 pressed through the nozzle controls the diameter of the balls. This paper designs a pattern with a 3 x 3 lens-array with a numerical aperture of about 0.38. Diameters range from 60 to 500 um. Optical measurements indicate a diameter fluctuation within 3% and an optical insertion loss is below 2.5dB with a wavelength of 635nm in a single-mode fiber (SMF). Therefore the eyeballlike spherical micro-lens is capable of increasing coupling efficiency. Copyright © 2009 by ASME.

In this work, the authors proposed and modeled a phase shifter-less phased array receiver. In the front-end of the array, the harmonic mixing of the spatially distributed local oscillator (LO) signal with the incident RF signal produces the required intermediate frequency (IF) signal. For beamsteering, only the LO feed antenna is to be scanned mechanically. This reduces the complexity and thus the cost of the phased array, which can be of practical use in certain applications. The presented numerical results for some typical values of the involving parameters show that the proposed array can maintain an almost constant antenna gain within a wide scan range for a RF received power in the range of -80 dBm to -20 dBm.
