This study presents a novel approach to activate a narrowband transparency line within a reflecting broadband window in all-dielectric metasurfaces, in analogy to the electromagnetically-induced transparency effect, by means of a quasi-bound state in the continuum (qBIC). We demonstrate that the resonance overlapping of a bright mode and a qBIC-based nearly-dark mode with distinct Q-factor can be fully governed by a silicon trimer-based unit cell with broken-inversion-symmetry cross shape, thus providing the required response under normal incidence of a linearly-polarized light. Our analysis that is derived from the far-field multipolar decomposition and near-field electromagnetic distributions uncovers the main contributions of different multipoles on the qBIC resonance, with governing magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole terms supplied by distinct parts of the dielectric "molecule." The findings extracted from this research open up new avenues for the development of polarization-dependent technologies, with particular interest in its capabilities for sensing and biosensing. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

Considering potential threats to cyber-physical systems such as component faults and stealthy cyber-attacks, an adaptive observer-based threat discrimination method is proposed for identifying the occurring threat type. Typically, stealthy attacks have only weak effects easily obscured by disturbances on the system outputs. To solve this problem, a parameter adaptation algorithm based on a newly designed dynamic adaptive gain generator is proposed, aiming at improving the sensitivity of the adaptive threat discrimination scheme to potential threats. Only the strictly positive real condition of the proposed gain generator sufficiently ensures the stability of the adaptive observer error system. A moment-matching method is then developed to determine the proper parameters of the gain generator, allowing for the improvement of the sensitivity of the threat discriminators. A numerical example to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology is presented.

Artificial intelligence systems are usually implemented either using machine learning or expert systems. Machine learning methods are usually more accurate and applicable to a broader range of applications. Expert systems, on the other hand, require much less data for training and generate more comprehensible results. These characteristics are typically desired in the fields of surgery and medicine because there isn't much data available. In order to give a machine's decisions a deeper level of semantics, it is also advantageous to incorporate a doctor's expertise into it. Furthermore, it is safer to understand the reasoning behind a machine's choices. In this paper, a Dempster-Shafer Theory (DST) based expert system is suggested for the task of surgical training skill assessment. An interval-based probabilistic feature analysis was applied to the data to assign values to the mass functions. Zhang's rule of combination was applied to handle the conflicting evidence in the prediction phase. The performance of the proposed method was compared to another DST classifier, SVM, and XGBoost. Our method outperforms SVM and other DST classifiers, but it is not as precise as XGBoost. By reducing the size of the dataset, the added benefit of using an expert system as opposed to a machine learning method was explored further. The performance of the suggested method is not adversely affected by the size of the dataset, whereas the XGBoost classifier is.

Breast cancer and consequent tumor metastases are almost hard challenges for human health in the last years. The tumor metastases affect treatments adversely. Positive Electrostatic Charge Therapy (PECT) is a new and different method to treat malignant tumors. The evaluated two breast cancer cell lines (MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231) indicated that despite MCF-7 and normal cells, PECT induced significant apoptosis in MDA-MB-231. Positive charge accumulation likely repels cations and the proton is an important cation that affects intracellular pH. In this study, we investigated the effect of alkaline cell culture on Benign and malignant breast cancer cell apoptosis. MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cell lines were incubated in alkaline culture with a pH of 8.8. The cell lines’ apoptosis was monitored through microscopy and flow cytometry methods. The results showed more apoptosis in MDA-MB-231 than MCF-7 as expected. The obtained result could be due to the higher culture acidity of MDA-MB-231 than MCF-7. The results can suggest new methods for treating malignant breast cancer in the future.

Natural Disasters (NDs), such as tsunamis, floods, and earthquakes, may cause damage to the transmission and distribution infrastructures as well as communication systems. In these situations, generators may even be intentionally shut down for security reasons. The result is a major power outage or a blackout, which may disrupt industrial production, disturb commercial and household activities and imperil human lives. Contrary to large-scale power systems, Micro Grids (MGs) may offer a higher resilience to NDs because of their compact sizes, manageable loads, and constrained bounds. Such an MG may include Photo-Voltaic (PV) system, Battery Energy Storage (BES) system, winds turbine, diesel generators, and local electric loads. It operates in grid-connected in normal conditions, and in islanded mode during NDs, ensuring that no disruption in the supply of critical loads happens. The main objective of this article is to study the planning of Community MG (CMG) for hospital loads to ensure high resilience against NDs. Hospital loads in the Northwest Lombok region of Indonesia are considered as the case study. The goal is to achieve three days of uninterruptible power supply during NDs. HOMER Grid carries out the simulation research. According to the results, the planned CMG could provide the necessary hospital load during the intended time period without any interruptions.

Robust trajectory tracking for underactuated mechanical systems without velocity measurements

In this paper, the notion of contraction is used to solve the trajectory-tracking problem for a class of mechanical systems. Additionally, we propose a dynamic extension to remove velocity measurements from the controller while rejecting matched disturbances. In particular, we propose three control designs stemming from the Interconnection and Damping Assignment Passivity-Based Control approach. The first controller is a tracker that does not require velocity measurements. The second control design solves the trajectory-tracking problem while guaranteeing robustness with respect to matched disturbances. Then, the third approach is a combination of both mentioned controllers. It is shown that all proposed design methods guarantee exponential convergence of the mechanical system to the desired (feasible) trajectory due to the contraction property of the closed-loop system. The applicability of this method is illustrated via the design of a controller for an underactuated mechanical system. © 2023, CC BY.

Recently, virtual reality (VR) and 360° videos have been increasingly adopted in a wide range of applications. However, the huge sizes of 360° videos necessitate the use of powerful compression tools to allow for efficient storage and streaming of these videos. In this article, we compare the performance of four different video codecs, including AV1 and versatile video coding (VVC), when applied to a dataset of 360° videos. We conduct our evaluation according to peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR)-based 360° video quality assessment (VQA) metrics. As omnidirectional videos are usually streamed as independent tiles, we also investigate the tiling effect on VVC compression performance by comparing full-frame-based compression to tiled segment compression using grids of 8x8 and 16x16 tiles. © VDE VERLAG GMBH - Berlin - Offenbach.

Due to increasing the demand for using photovoltaic power system that uses sustainable and renewable energy sources to meet power demand, many studies were investigated to improve the photovoltaic power system operation. In this paper, the power system quality will be discussed to show the impact of power quality on the electrical grid by analyzing the nominal current and voltage output from the inverter at different weather conditions and different switching frequencies. Power quality is considered one of the major issues that need to be addressed. The low quality ofpower operation may cause disturbance and economic losses. The realtime simulation will be done by using MATLAB/Simulink.

Solar energy is considered one of the best essential energy sources to solve the present power crisis. The solar photovoltaic system has a low conversion efficiency that inflicts maximum power extractions. The non-linear relationship between the voltage and current insists on using a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controller. Perturb and observe (P&O) MPPT controller is popular because of its simple design and cost-effectiveness features;nonetheless, it has drawbacks while operating under partial shading conditions (PSC). The maximum power trapezium (MPT) method modified the P&O algorithm by incorporating an appropriate scanning mechanism for PSC. Despite having good PSC performance, this method's tracking time is much longer than the conventional algorithm in both uniform irradiance conditions (UIC) and PSC. The algorithm proposed in this paper modifies the MPT method with an extra strategy to distinguish between the UIC and PSC. If the pattern is recognized as UIC, the proposed method utilizes the conventional P&O algorithm to track the MPP;otherwise, scanning techniques are being used. The proposed algorithm's operation was tested on simulation using distinct UIC and PSC patterns and worked effectively. © 2022 IEEE.

In modern vehicles, efficiently storing CAN bus data is crucial for on-board diagnostics, performance monitoring, analysis, and the investigation of failures and accidents. In past work, an EDR (Event Data Recorder) akin to the ones in aircrafts has been mooted. The state-of-the-art in this field comprises proposals that propose efficient lossless compression of CAN data for such analyses – this limits the data storage capacity. Our contribution SmrtComp aims to achieve a much larger storage efficiency by storing recent data in a lossless format and compressing older data in increasingly lossy formats. The system tries to approximately adhere to an expected accuracy vs time curve (a QoS metric) that is specified a priori. Our study evaluates SmrtComp's performance using various metrics such as the compression gain (CG), root mean square error (RMSE), total data storage and the preservation of key features. SmrtComp was implemented on an ARM Beaglebone board; it was used to store realistic traces and synthetic traces obtained from CAN bus simulators. We achieve a 3.2× higher data storage efficiency as compared to the closest competing work and outperform a popular lossy algorithm by 94.33% in terms of the RMSE. SmrtComp achieves line-speed compression of CAN bus data making it a promising solution for managing large data volumes, and we also show that our compression method preserves anomalies. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first hybrid and tunable compression system in this domain.
