An-Najah University recently established a center for excellence in learning and teaching (CELT) in collaboration with Northwestern University. The main goal of the center is to support the university's transition to a more learner-centered, technology-assisted environment. This paper focuses on the CELT teaching Fellows Program, a program to build leadership capacity in learning and teaching. It also reports on key challenges which the center encountered when it began to engage with the university and its response to those challenges which included: i) developing a participation strategy, ii) creating multi-specialist teaching fellow teams, and iii) responding to macro-intervention requests.

This chapter responds to the recent crisis surrounding developments in large language models (LLMs) and generative AI with a relational view of education informed by the emerging world-centered approach to education and a synthesis of personalist character formation with feminist care ethics. It proposes that the instinct to manage student use of generative AI with carceral practices, characterized by surveillance and control, undermines the project of forming students as whole persons who can evaluate and use or reject emerging technologies in a mature way. The chapter concludes with practical suggestions for the classroom that can be aligned with institutional strategic plans. © 2025 Wiley Periodicals LLC.

Usability of active teaching and learning techniques with YouTube videos to enhance understanding of thermodynamics laws in selected secondary schools in Rwanda

This study examined the effectiveness of active teaching methods combined with YouTube videos in secondary school students understanding of thermodynamics laws. A mixed-method approach was used with both quantitative and qualitative data. A quasi-experimental design was used, with the experimental group exposed to active teaching methods using YouTube videos and the control group taught traditionally. The Survey of Thermodynamic Processes and the First and Second Laws and Semi-Structured Interview were employed. The study involved 86 male students from Rubavu district, senior 3 students at Petit Seminaire Saint Pie De Nyundo. Pre-intervention test showed no significant difference (P > .005) in the students understanding of thermodynamics between the two groups. However post-intervention results showed a big improvement in the experimental group, with MANOVA analysis showing a highly significant difference (p < .001) in favour of the experimental group. Also qualitative data from semi-structured interviews highlighted students’ positive views on the active learning approach, how YouTube videos catered for different learning styles and self-paced learning. These findings suggest that integrating dynamic visual content and real life examples through platforms like YouTube can improve students’ understanding and performance in complex subjects like thermodynamics. © 2025 IOP Publishing Ltd. We describe the development, implementation, and assessment of a faculty study group program designed to foster teaching as a reflective, collaborative activity within a research university. Conceived within conceptual frameworks that challenge technical/rationalist approaches to faculty development, the program was successful in creating opportunities for faculty of different disciplines, age groups, ranks, and teaching experience to establish productive discourse communities around their own teaching. Our experience shows that such programs require careful thought and planning, which we detail here, and that faculty even in research oriented institutions can be captured by the "good problem" that teaching represents. © 2000 Human Sciences Press, Inc.

Secondary school teacher’s conception and reflection of computer programming with Scratch

The present study explores teachers' conception and reflection of computer programming with a Scratch in terms of technological and pedagogical aspects. A mixed research approach specifically sequential explanatory research design was used to collect quantitative and qualitative data. The population was comprised of two hundred and four in-service Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, and Biology teachers from Kayonza district, Rwanda. However, only 34 were randomly selected to participate in the study. An achievement test and structured interview were used to collect quantitative and qualitative data, respectively. The quantitative data obtained from pre- and post-tests were analyzed using a paired t test, and the data from the interview was analyzed by descriptive, and interpretive analyses. It was revealed that secondary school teachers have a respectable conception and constructive reflection of Scratch programming once attending scratch training. Quantitative findings showed that there was an important difference in the mean among pre- and post-tests with 0.171 learning gain and an effect size of 0.53 (df = 33, p < 0.05). It was also revealed that Scratch is an operational instructional tool for teaching and learning Mathematics and Sciences. Furthermore, teachers articulated progressive views of using scratch in teaching and learning Mathematics and Sciences as it supports them to visualize abstract content, improves students' interest and impetus, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, and acts as an assessment tool. © The Author(s) 2022.

This research proposes a comprehensive model-based cyber-physical systems (CPS) design and development environment for undergraduate cyber engineering curriculum. CPSs are characterized by usability, dependability, and tight development time, and require addressing key questions related to security and performance. The traditional deterministic modeling approach becomes insufficient when multiple CPS models are combined, thus the proposed research aims to develop reliable fault-tolerant CPS models using various modeling techniques. The goal is to prepare cyber engineering courses for future generation CPS design, incorporating data-driven learning, and supporting evolving trends in model-based CPS design, while fostering collaboration with other institutions. © 2023 IEEE.

To address the ABET learning outcomes in engineering education many assessment methodologies have been developed. One of such methodologies is based on the use of "profile of an engineer" developed by Davis et. al.6 This work documents the important roles filled by a practicing engineer and the observable behaviors necessary for effective performance. Some learning outcomes, developed in this work, can be achieved at an elementary level in the classroom. However, the classroom being a part of a university setting, not a corporate environment is limited in context and scope and can only provide a limited simulation to real life work setting of an engineer. To provide the educational experiences for producing the full desired set of outcomes and to close the gap between a graduating engineer and a real practitioner co op education or internships are the key. During this type of experiential learning, engineers in the field provide the real life model of professional behaviors and practices directly to students. Meanwhile, engineering students are also being socialized to the corporate environment and gradually begin to perform some professional activities with increasing responsibility. The knowledge constructed through co op experiences can lead to the students' development of the Holistic Interpersonal Skills and Professional Behaviors of Davis' engineering profile. This paper presents evidence that co op and classroom education are complementary and necessary components for the development of a quality engineering education and job-ready engineering graduates. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2008.

Composite materials are widely used due to their advantages such as high strength to weight ratios, high corrosion resistance, high fatigue life in cyclic loading, and greater feasibility for styling and design. This paper presents the development of a new course project focusing on the novel use of composite materials to promote enhanced performance and safety while reducing the mass and cost of various products. In order to stimulate the students' critical thinking and problem solving skills, the students are required to study the product specifications, analyze the design requirements, perform engineering analysis, and propose several design approaches. The goal of the project is to achieve the maximum mass reduction by the maximum usage of composite materials. With the aid of advanced simulation software, the students are able to optimize their design. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2010.
