Recent research suggests design pre-patterns, structured collections of evidence-based research and design knowledge, provide a useful resource for design activities in emerging application domains. This paper extends previous research by exploring the impact of pre-patterns and tools to support pre-pattern exploration for the domain of ubiquitous computing in the home. We conducted an empirical study of 44 designers engaged in a two hour concentrated brainstorming and design task for the home of the future. Our results show pre-patterns are an easily adopted resource for designers that can impact even the earliest of design activities. We also provide insights for future development of pre-patterns based on designer feedback. Copyright 2006 ACM.

We present the first known direct measurement of word alignment coverage on an Arabic-English parallel corpus using inversion transduction grammar constraints. While direct measurements have been reported for several European and Asian languages, to date no results have been available for Arabic or any Semitic language despite much recent activity on Arabic- English spoken language and text translation. Many recent syntax based statistical MT models operate within the domain of ITG expressiveness, often for efficiency reasons, so it has become important to determine the extent to which the ITG constraint assumption holds. Our results on Arabic provide further evidence that ITG expressiveness appears largely sufficient for core MT models.

Voluntary associations serve crucial roles in local communities and within our larger democratic society. They aggregate shared interests, collective will, and cultivate civic competencies that nurture democratic participation. People active in multiple local groups frequently act as opinion leaders and create “weak” social ties across groups. In Blacksburg and surrounding Montgomery County, Virginia, the Blacksburg Electronic Village (BEV) community computer network has helped to foster nearly universal Internet penetration. Set in this dense Internet context, the present study investigated if and how personal affiliation with local groups enhanced political participation in this high information and communication technology environment. This paper presents findings from longitudinal survey data that indicate as individuals’ uses of information technology within local formal groups increases over time, so do their levels and types of involvement in the group. Furthermore, these increases most often appear among people who serve as opinion leaders and maintain weak social ties in their communities. Individuals’ changes in community participation, interests and activities, and Internet use suggest ways in which group members act upon political motivations and interests across various group types.

These projects often give students life-changing exposure to genuine needs and impressive results to include in their portfolio when seeking employment. New similarity function S3 and energy function E3 of multiple feature tracking are formulated for especially rapidly changing motion in this paper. Stereo and motion cues are tightly coupled in the similarity function S3. Thus this property makes the similarity function S3 control repetition ambiguity almost completely. Seven assignment matrices to maximize the seventh dimensional nonlinear energy function E3 is obtained for applying the similar algorithm which we previously proposed in [3]. Even though proposed measurements suggest perfect solution for feature tracking, it needs high computational processing time.

Recently, a capsule endoscope has been developed to observe images from the inside of intestine. Such a capsule endoscope does not have locomotion or hold method. To get proper diagnosis and medication, it is necessary to control the capsule from outside to guide locomotion. The designed and implemented capsule has feasibility to contract the small intestine by electrical stimuli through the electrodes. When the small intestine is contracted by electrical stimuli, the capsule can move to opposite direction, which means the capsule can go up and down in the small intestine. The implemented stimuli capsule always monitors excessive energy transmission and automatically shuts down the electrical stimuli to make it more secure. Additionally, the stimuli capsule goes on standby mode to save the battery, and it can be reset by comparator circuit which is connected to stimulus electrodes. To verify the design and implement the stimuli capsule, in-vitro experiments were performed with pig's small intestine.

Electrogastrography (EGG) is a significant reference of the myoelectric activity of the gastrointestinal tract and indicates whether it has a disease or not. There have been numerous studies of the myoelectric activity in a stomach, but only a few studies of the intestines because of the difficulty of measurement in the intestines. Recently, the technology of the biotelemetry capsule for measurement of internal information in the human digestive tract has been developed. In the current study, an EGG telemetry system using the developed biotelemetry technology was designed and implemented for measuring EGG in intestines. The EGG capsule converts the acquired EGG value to digital data, which is transmitted from the capsule to the external receiver. The performance of the telemetry capsule for the EGG monitoring in the gastrointestinal tract was verified by in-vitro animal experiments. From the experiment, it was verified that the EGG telemetry capsule can measures a slow wave in intestines.
