We describe a set of techniques for Arabic cross-document coreference resolution. We compare a baseline system of exact mention string-matching to ones that include local mention context information as well as information from an existing machine translation system. It turns out that the machine translation-based technique outperforms the baseline, but local entity context similarity does not. This helps to point the way for future crossdocument coreference work in languages with few existing resources for the task. © 2009 ACL and AFNLP.

In this panel, we explore the role emerging transitive materials, like flexible thin-film displays, multi-touch input skins, e-textiles, micro-actuators and Claytronics might play in re-defining the human interface towards a programmable form of reality. Panelist will extrapolate historical trends from Tangibles to new developments in organic user interfaces, trying to identify a future in which interfaces will no longer be predominantly flat, but instead have any possible shape or form: from skins that are foldable, flexible and physical to three-dimensional products that are fully kinetic.

Traditional menu designs are not well-suited for command selection on distant displays. We describe a *** interaction technique called the "roll-and-pinch menu" (rapMenu), and investigate the design space of remote menu selection using freehand gestural input. The rapMenu maps intuitive hand postures and gestures to a radial menu layout at two levels of granularity: the user rolls her hand to alter the wrist orientation, which makes a group of menu items selectable; then she touches her thumb to a particular finger (forming & pinch gesture) to select a specific item in that group. We present the visual design and behavior of the rapMenu, consider related design issues, examine design variations, and discuss the strengths and limitations of our approach.

This paper proposes a method to calculate the confidence score for out-of-vocabulary (OOV) word verification based on the Output Probability Distribution (OPD) of phoneme HMMs. Compared with input vector for dynamic garbage model, OPD vector contains more information than the sorted probabilities. Confidence score of each phoneme is calculated by SVM with OPD vectors as input. Hypotheses are accepted or rejected based on this confidence score. Experimental results showed that the proposed method achieved lower EER in word verification task than the conventional dynamic garbage model.

A large number of papers have proposed cryptographic protocols for establishing secure group communication. These protocols allow a set of group members to exchange or establish keys to encrypt and authenticate messages within the group. At the same time, individuals outside of the group cannot eavesdrop on group communication or inject messages. There have even been usability studies, demonstrating an average user can successfully complete some of these protocols. However, group protocols are rarely used in the real world. In this work, we conduct a survey to help uncover why the general population ignores such mechanisms for group communication. We also try to determine what protocols would best match respondents' current expectations for group protocols and methods for establishing trust. Survey results indicate that a group protocol that leverages location-limited channels, PKI, or Web-of-Trust authenticated public keys and allows addition and deletion of members fulfills the majority of users' expectations.

This paper presents an emotional exchange framework for a socially interactive robot. The purpose of emotional exchange in social interaction between a robot and people is to make people feel that the robot is a believable living assistant, not a mere machine for information translation. Our emotional exchange framework is composed of the emotion recognition, generation, and expression systems. A user's emotion is recognized by multi-modality such as voice, dialogue, and touch. The robot's emotion is generated according to a psychological theory about cognitive emotions caused by the social interaction within people. Furthermore, the emotion intensity is regulated by the loyalty level of a robot to various users. The generated emotion is dynamically expressed by facial expression, gesture, and the musical sound of the robot. The proposed system, which is composed of all the three components that are necessary for a full emotional interaction cycle, is implemented in the real robot system and tested. The proposed framework can be a cornerstone for the design of emotion interaction and generation systems for robots.

User experience (UX) is still an elusive notion with many different definitions, despite some recent attempts to develop a unified view on UX. The lack of a shared definition of UX not only confuses or even misleads customers of a product/service but also undermines the effectiveness of researching, managing and teaching UX. Diverse ideas have been generated in scientific activities that aim to develop a common understanding about the meaning and scope of UX. It is plausible, with sound methodologies, to converge these divergences, driving the UX community closer to a common definition and integrated views of UX. This SIG tackles this challenge by systematically assembling a set of existing definitions and viewpoints of UX and collecting opinions on them from known UX experts/researchers and general CHI'08 attendees.

Information is being disseminated much faster than we can assimilate it, leading to information overload. In addition to desktop computers, users use a vast array of other devices to manage their information, which leads to information fragmentation. It has not yet been studied how users adapt their information management practices in response to the introduction of new devices into their personal information ecosystem. As part of my doctoral research, I plan to study this evolution, which is important for the design of next-generation devices and to establish future research directions in personal information management. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2007.
