Disaster relief responders aim to quickly locate and extract survivors from dangerous environments. This research explores the use of a collaborative guidance system for search-and-rescue in a complex building. We implemented and evaluated a proof-of-concept system that allowed a scene commander and responder to efficiently search a building using visual, nonverbal communication. Participants found the interface to be both intuitive and fun, and results suggest that the collaborative navigation system was effective.

We show in an empirical study that not only did all cross-lingual alternations of verb frames across Chinese-English translations fall within the reordering capacity of Inversion Transduction Grammars, but more surprisingly, about 97% of the alternations were expressible by the far more restrictive Linear Transduction Grammars. Also, about 71% of the cross-lingual verb frame alternations turn out to be monotonic even for diverse language pairs such as Chinese-English. We also observe that a source verb frame alternation pattern translates into a small subset of the possible target verb frame alternation patterns, based on the construction of the source sentence and the frame set definitions. As a part of our evaluation, we also present a novel linear time algorithm to determine whether a particular syntactic alignment falls within the expressiveness of Linear Transduction Grammars. To our knowledge, this is the first study that attempts to analyze the cross-lingual alternation behavior of semantic frames and the extent of their coverage under syntax-based machine translation formalisms. © 2012 European Association for Machine Translation.

Efficient analysis of event sequences and the ability to answer time-related, clinically important questions can accelerate clinical research in several areas such as causality assessments, decision support systems, and retrospective studies. The Clinical Narrative Temporal Reasoning Ontology (CNTRO)-based system is designed for semantically representing, annotating, and inferring temporal relations and constraints for clincial events in Electronic Health Records (EHR) represented in both structured and unstructured ways. The LifeFlow system is designed to support an interactive exploration of event sequences using visualization techniques. The combination of the two systems will provide a comprehensive environment for users to visualize inferred temporal relationships from EHR data. This paper discusses our preliminary efforts on connecting the two systems and the benefits we envision from such an environment. Copyright © 2012 ACM.

humans use very sophisticated ways of bodily emotion expression combining facial expressions, sound, gestures and full body posture. Like others, we want to apply these aspects of human communication to ease the interaction between robots and users. In doing so we believe there is a need to consider what abstraction of human social communicative behaviors is appropriate for robots. The study reported in this paper is a pilot study to not offer simulated emotion but to offer an abstracted robot version of emotion expressions and an evaluation to what extent users interpret these robot expressions as the intended emotional states. To this end, we present the mobile, mildly humanized robot Daryl, for which we created six motion sequences that combine human-like, animal-like, and robot-specific social cues. The results of a user study (N=29) show that despite the absence of facial expressions and articulated extremities, subjects' interpretation of Daryl's emotional states were congruent with the abstracted emotion display. These results demonstrate that abstract displays of emotion that combine human-like, animal-like, and robot-specific modalities could in fact be an alternative to complex facial expressions and will feed into ongoing work identifying robot-specific social cues.

Scientists in all fields are acquiring data at a rate that is challenging the limits of human cognitive capacity. At the same time, researchers' attention is increasingly claimed by ever more diverse demands on their time. Visual perception is the highest bandwidth channel into the human brain, yet many existing visualization tools require a period of training rendering them inaccessible from a practical standpoint for many users. In addition, appropriate visualizations for cognitively overloaded users may differ from those optimized for analysis. We present VizDeck, a web-based visualization system for relational data that uses a card game metaphor and automatic visualization techniques to assist scientists and researchers in creating interactive visual dashboard applications in seconds with no programming necessary. © 2012 Authors.

Real-time monitoring and responding to events observed across multiple surveillance cameras can pose an overwhelmingly high mental workload. Contextualized Video Interfaces (which place the surveillance videos within their spatial context) can be used to support these tasks. In order for users to integrate information from the videos and the spatial context as the events progress in real time, navigation interfaces are required. However, different tasks seem to favor different navigation techniques. In this paper, we describe the formal evaluation of four navigation designs for Contextualized Video Interfaces. The four designs arise from the consideration of two important factors of navigation techniques: navigation mode (manual or semi-automatic) and navigation context (overview or detailed view). To avoid a piecemeal understanding of the navigation techniques, we evaluated them using three tasks that have different information requirements. While semi-automatic navigation was generally preferable, low-DOF manual navigation techniques were found to be useful in certain situations. The choice between overview navigation and detailed-view navigation depends primarily on the user's information requirement in the task. Based on the findings, we provide guidelines on how to select designs according to task features. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper presents our team's design and implementation of an innovative solution to solve the challenge proposed by the 3DUI Contest, which consisted of creating a 3DUI to solve simple 3D puzzles. Rather than using a direct manipulation technique to handle placement of the puzzle pieces, such as the virtual hand, we designed an innovative technique based on build. We aimed to provide a fun and intuitive way to solve puzzles that is not possible in the physical world. Rather than having to focus on specific pieces one at a time, users instead build pieces from individual building blocks, allowing them to focus on the structure of the puzzle space. The results of a user study showed that this system provides a fun and engaging experience for both novices and experts. We believe that performance was determined primarily by experience with games and 3D puzzles rather than by 3DUI design. © 2011 IEEE.

Issues such as hand and tracker jitter negatively affect user performance with the ray-casting selection technique in 3D environments. This makes it difficult for users to perform tasks that require them to select objects that have a small visible area, since small targets require high levels of precision. We introduce an approach to address this issue that uses progressive refinement of the set of selectable objects to reduce the required precision of the task. We present a design space of progressive refinement techniques and an exemplar technique called Sphere-casting refined by QUAD-menu (SQUAD). We explore the tradeoffs between progressive refinement and immediate selection techniques in an evaluation comparing SQUAD to ray-casting. Both an analytical evaluation based on a distal pointing model and an empirical evaluation demonstrate that progressive refinement selection can be better than immediate selection. SQUAD was much more accurate than ray-casting, and SQUAD was faster than ray-casting with small targets and less cluttered environments. © 2011 IEEE.

The ongoing rise of human computation as a means of solving computational problems has created an environment where human workers are often regarded as nameless, faceless computational resources. Some people have begun to think of online tasks as a "remote person call". In this paper, we summarize ethical and practical labor issues surrounding online labor, and offer a set of guidelines for designing and using online labor in ways that support more positive relationships between workers and requesters, so that both can gain the most benefit from the interaction.
