With the advance of tangible technology, more and more educational systems are enhanced. This paper describes how tangible technology could enhance animal companions in terms of human computer interaction. These potential advantages are further organized as three design considerations, which further underpin the development of tangible animal companions. The tangible animal companions are also applied to the learning activity of traditional Chinese characters for young students. By doing so, tangible technology in learning can be evaluated and advanced in the future.

In this paper, we describe a work-in-progress research to develop a program control structure visualization tool for transforming student programs into graphical representations of control structure, including sequences, selections, and iterations. The tool can be used for assisting novice students in debugging their programs by checking whether the transformed control structure of their programs is consistent with their program plans. In addition, the graphical representation of student programs can be compared to that of a model program to detect errors in program plans.

Embedded database systems are widely adopted in various control and motoring systems, e.g., cyber-physical systems (CPSes). To support the functionality to access the historical data, a multiversion index is adopted to maintain multiple versions of data items and their index information. However, CPSes are usually batterypowered embedded systems that have limited energy, computing power, and storage space. In this work, we consider the systems with phase-change memory (PCM) as their storage due to its nonvolatility and low energy consumption. In order to resolve the problem of the limited storage space and the fact that existing multiversion index designs are lack of space efficiency, we propose a spaceefficient multiversion index scheme to enhance the space utilization and access performance of embedded multiversion database systems on PCM by utilizing the byte-addressability and write asymmetry of PCM. A series of experiments was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of the proposed scheme. The results show that the proposed scheme achieves very high space utilization and has good performance on serving update transactions and range queries. Copyright 2014 ACM.

As NAND flash memory has become a major choice of storage media in diversified computing environments, the performance issue of flash memory has been extensively addressed in many excellent designs. Among them, an effective strategy is to adopt multiple channels and flash-memory chips to improve the performance on data accesses. However, the degree of data access parallelism cannot be increased by simply increasing the number of channels and chips in the storage device, because it is seriously limited by the maximum current constraint of the bus interface and affected by the access patterns of user data. As a consequence, to maximize the degree of access parallelism, it is of paramount significance to have a proper scheduling strategy to determine the order that read/write requests are served. In this paper, a current-aware scheduling strategy for read/write requests is proposed to maximize the read performance without violating the bus current constraint and without missing (the deadline of) written data. The proposed strategy is then evaluated through a series of experiments, in which the results are quite encouraging. © 2014 IEEE.

A key application of learning analytics is predicting students' learning performances and risks of dropping out. Heterogeneous data were collected from selected school to yield a model for predicting student's dropout. Results from this exploratory study conclude dropout prediction by learning analytics may provide more precise information on identifying at-risk students and factors causing them to be at risk.

Our tagging editor is effective and enables the annotated corpus to be used in a shared task in ICCE 2014.

We organize a shared task on grammatical error diagnosis for learning Chinese as a Foreign Language (CFL) in the ICCE-2014 workshop on Natural Language Processing Techniques for Educational Applications (NLPTEA). In this paper, we describe all aspects of this shared task, including task description, data preparation, evaluation metrics, and testing results. The aim is, through such evaluation campaigns, more advanced computer-assisted Chinese learning techniques will be emerged.

Coordinatively unsaturated (CUS) iron sites are highly active in catalytic oxidation reactions;however, maintaining the CUS structure of iron during heterogeneous catalytic reactions is a great challenge. Here, we report a strategy to stabilize single-atom CUS iron sites by embedding highly dispersed FeN4 centers in the graphene matrix. The atomic structure of FeN4 centers in graphene was revealed for the first time by combining high-resolution transmission electron microscopy/high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy with lowtemperature scanning tunneling microscopy. These confined single-atom iron sites exhibit high performance in the direct catalytic oxidation of benzene to phenol at room temperature, with a conversion of 23.4% and a yield of 18.7%, and can even proceed efficiently at 0°C with a phenol yield of 8.3% after 24 hours. Both experimental measurements and density functional theory calculations indicate that the formation of the Fe-O intermediate structure is a key step to promoting the conversion of benzene to phenol. These findings could pave the way toward highly efficient nonprecious catalysts for low-temperature oxidation reactions in heterogeneous catalysis and electrocatalysis. © 2015 The Authors, some rights reserved.
