This paper presents contributions to computer-aided control system design in the parameter space approach. Newly developed modeling algorithms allow the use of three-dimensional interactive computer graphics as a powerful and very flexible tool for multivariable control system design. Robustness with respect to plant variation and sensor failures, actuator constraints, sensor noise and quantization effects in addition to specifications about stability, damping, and bandwidth are handled in a direct geometric way by working with admissible regions of several design parameters. An interactive CAD software package with these capabilities is discussed and several design examples demonstrate the potential and versatility of the method.

The development of computer-aided engineering workstations has raised many new issues not previously encountered in design-drafting systems. Consider, for example, mechanical design. Most turnkey mechanical CAD systems simply provide computer-aided artwork. Their success in the marketplace is based on the relatively standardized drafting conventions followed across the industry. Therefore, extensive development efforts are justified because the same software package can be sold to many companies. Unfortunately, engineering analysis software does not offer the same leverage. Analysis software is generally less robust, being built around specific schools of thought. For example, many generic analysis methodologies cannot even agree on a common coordinate system.

An approach is presented to reconstructing an object from its engineering drawing by recognizing the 2-D features on the drawing and using volume sweeping. Important features on the drawing like symmetry, ear, rib, hole pattern and cross section are recognized. Nonexact projections are removed first, then primitives are constructed by sweep volume according to the cross section. The final object is the Boolean set of these sweep volumes. A prototype program is implemented according to this approach. Some selected examples are shown to demonstrate the processes. Limitations are discussed, and short-term improvements and long-term goals are suggested.< >

This paper focuses on the problem of management of CAD data by investigating the use of the software engineering principles of data abstraction and object-oriented programming as means for managing the volume and complexity of design data. It discusses how a data management system which manages abstract data types provides a framework for integrating a CAD environment by providing a single mechanism to manage data, programs, and the manipulation of the data with the programs. It also shows how two forms of abstraction, aggregation and generalization, can be used to model hierarchies of parts and components, and multiple design alternatives, respectively. These abstractions are then used to model the geometrical and topological data required to describe three-dimensional mechanical parts.

A finite-element analysis was conducted to evaluate the stress distributions within Mode I and Mode II failure specimens, assuming both isotropic and orthotropic elastic material properties. The effects of anisotropy on both the magnitude and the location of the highest stress concentration at the vicinity of the crack tip are significant. The results from modeling realistic blunt crack tip geometry and resin-rich zones imply that local variations in the microstructure strongly influence the stress state near the crack tip and therefore the measured fracture properties. In addition, the features of a viscoelastic model for thermoplastic matrices are described. This model will be used in future investigations of matrix-dominated failure phenomena. © 1989 ASTM International. All rights reserved.

Virtual assembly training systems show a high potential to complement or even replace physical setups for training of assembly processes in and beyond the automotive industry. The precondition for the breakthrough of virtual training is that it overcomes the problems of former approaches. The paper presents the design approach taken during the development of a game-based, virtual training system for procedural assembly knowledge in the EU-FP7 project VISTRA. One key challenge to address when developing virtual assembly training is the extensive authoring effort for setting up virtual environments. Although knowledge from the product and manufacturing design is available and could be used for virtual training, a concept for integration of this data is still missing. This paper presents the design of a platform which transfers available enterprise data into a unified model for virtual training and thus enables virtual training of workers at the assembly line before the physical prototypes exist. The data requirements and constraints stemming from industrial partners involved in the project will be discussed. A second hurdle for virtual training is the insufficient user integration and acceptance. In this context, the paper introduces an innovative hardware set-up for game-based user interaction, which has been chosen to enhance user involvement and acceptance of virtual training. © 2012 IEEE.

At the David Sarnoff Research center there exists a long standing research effort in support of the design of electron optic devices. The design process for such devices - the color high definition picture tube being the most recent and most outstanding example - involves the generation of very large volumes of data, from both simulation and experimentation. The goal of the design process is to simultaneously optimize performance parameters such as resolution, brightness, contrast and color purity, subject to manufacturing constraints, while varying the geometry or operating conditions of the electron gun or magnetic deflection system. To make effective use of this multi-dimensional information requires visualization tools to aid designers in exploring the design space. In this paper, we describe in detail the nature of the interactive graphics tools we have developed. After a brief overview of the optical design process, we sketch the details of the engineering database, which contains the simulation and experimentation results. We then present "general use" visualization tools which can be applied to many engineering fields to manipulate arrays of data. We also describe paradigms for using these tools to perform constrained optimization. Finally, we present a prototype visual searcher for the design-space, i.e., a tool that allows designers to visually search through the design database and ask "what-if" type questions. © 1989 SPIE. Intuitive access to information in habitual real-world environments is a challenge for information technology. An important question is how can we enhance established and well-functioning everyday environments rather than replace them by virtual environments (VEs)? Augmented reality (AR) technology has a lot of potential in this respect because it augments real-world environments with computer-generated imagery. Today, most AR systems use see-through head-mounted displays, which share most of the disadvantages of other head-attached display devices.
