The rapid growth of distributed energy resources (DERs), such as renewable energy sources, generators, consumers, and prosumers in the smart grid infrastructure, poses significant cybersecurity and trust challenges to the grid controller. Consequently, it is crucial to identify adversarial tactics and measure the strength of the attacker’s DER. To enable a trustworthy smart grid controller, this work investigates a trustworthy artificial intelligence (AI) mechanism for proactive identification and explanation of the cyber risk caused by the control/status message of DERs. Thus, proposing and developing a trustworthy AI framework to facilitate the deployment of any AI algorithms for detecting potential cyber threats and analyzing root causes based on Shapley value interpretation while dynamically quantifying the risk of an attack based on Ward’s minimum variance formula. The experiment with a state-of-the-art dataset establishes the proposed framework as a trustworthy AI by fulfilling the capabilities of reliability, fairness, explainability, transparency, reproducibility, and accountability. Model for the structure function constant for index of refraction fluctuations in Rayleigh-Bénard turbulence

A model for the structure function constant associated with the index of refraction fluctuations in Rayleigh-Bénard turbulence is developed. The model is based upon the following assumptions: (1) the turbulence is homogeneous and isotropic at or near the midplane, (2) the rate of production is in balance with the rate of dissipation, (3) an inertial region exists, and (4) estimates for the rate of dissipation of temperature fluctuations and of turbulent kinetic energy can be made by assuming that the large-scale turbulence is dissipated in one eddy turnover time. From these assumptions, the dependence of the structure function on the geometry, heat flux, and the properties of the fluid is obtained. The model predicts that the normalized structure function constant is independent of the Rayleigh number. To verify the model, numerical simulations of Rayleigh-Bénard turbulence were performed using two different approaches: an in-house code based on a pseudospectral method, and a finite volume code which employs a model for the smallest scales of the turbulence. The model was found to agree with the results of the simulations, thereby lending support for the assumptions underlying the theory.

Distributed ledger technology (DLT) provides decentralised services by removing the need of trust among distributed nodes in the distributed system. Transactions across the network are visible to all participants. However, some transactions may contain sensitive information such as business contracts or even personal health records. To protect user privacy, the architecture of distributed multi-channel ledger with membership service as a critical component can be adopted. The proposed multi-channel membership service architecture combines two promising technologies, distributed ledger and Intel Software Guard Extensions (SGX). With SGX remote attestation and isolated execution, each node is enrolled as a trusted entity to the channels, which separate different applications and provide better flexibility. We propose security properties for membership service in distributed ledger and illustrate how SGX help to achieve these properties in each phase. Security analysis and evaluation show that the proposed architecture could enhance the privacy preservation and capabilities against attacks. Copyright © 2021 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

Well-posedness analysis of the Cahn-Hilliard-Biot model

We investigate the well-posedness of the recently proposed Cahn-Hilliard-Biot model. The model is a three-way coupled PDE of elliptic-parabolic nature, with several nonlinearities and the fourth order term known to the Cahn-Hilliard system. We show existence of weak solutions to the variational form of the equations and uniqueness under certain conditions of the material parameters and secondary consolidation, adding regularizing effects. Existence is shown by discretizing in space and applying ODE-theory (the Peano-Cauchy theorem) to prove existence of the discrete system, followed by compactness arguments to retain solutions of the continuous system. In addition, the continuous dependence of solutions on the data is established, in particular implying uniqueness. Both results build strongly on the inherent gradient flow structure of the model. Millimeter wave (mmWave) and terahertz (THz) communication protocols employ extensive antenna arrays to ensure reliable signal reception. However, aligning these narrow beams incurs a significant cost in beam training, which increases proportionally with the number of antennas. While beam prediction methods based on semantics from the RGB images demonstrate initial feasibility, they are still low on accuracy. Motivated by the fact that the recently introduced Segment Anything Model (SAM) can generate very accurate masks, which can be considered semantic information in this domain, this study proposes a beam prediction solution based on the masks of SAM. The SAM can extract more accurate semantic data from visual sources. Then instead of using the RGB images directly, the semantics images have been used to predict the beamforming vector using a lightweight LeNet5 model. The experimental results show that the SAM-based proposed method can perform significantly better than the two state-of-the-art deep learning models. The proposed solution method can achieve near 100% in top-5 beam prediction accuracy in real-world communication scenarios.

This research explores the transport of a Jeffrey fluid through a permeable slit of microchannel under the effect of a porous medium and constant *** laws of fluid mechanics are used to study the flow in a cross-sectional area of a narrow slit which generates a highly nonlinear system of partial differential equation with nonhomogeneous boundary *** solve the complex boundary value problem;a recursive(Langlois)approach is used and explicit expressions for velocity,pressure,stream function,flux,shear stress and fractional reabsorption are *** is noticed that the flow rate at the centre line of slit and shear stress on the walls of slit decay due to the presence of porous medium and viscoelastic fluid *** is also quantitatively observed that more pressure is required for the fluid flow when the slit is filled with a porous medium and reabsorption on the walls is *** mathematical results of the present research have significant importance in the field of biofluid mechanics and medical industry,therefore the application of a diseased rat kidney is also included in this research:and reabsorption velocities in the case of a diseased and a healthy rat kidney are calculated with the effects of a porous medium and constant re-absorption.

A quantified hypervulnerability approach for assessing resilience in supply chain networks

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the vulnerability of supply chain networks to sources of concurrent disruption. This research investigates and broadens a quantified, generalised definition of vulnerability, which enables a group of entities to be identified as highly, or hyper, vulnerable. This concept of hypervulnerability thresholds is demonstrated on a conceptual example. The example explains and shows how the definition of hypervulnerability thresholds can be applied. A maritime supply chain case study with various risks and disruptions is presented and analysed to demonstrate the practical utility of the approach and provide valuable information to guide decision making in other applications. Finally, the article concludes with answers to research questions and directions for future work. Copyright © 2024 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

The discipline of component-based modeling and simulation offers promising gains including reductions in development cost, time, and system complexity. This paradigm promotes the use and reuse of modular components for adequate development of complex simulations. Achieving effective and meaningful model reuse through the composition of components still remains a daunting challenge. “Composability”, an integral part of this challenge, is the capability to select and assemble model components in various combinations to satisfy specific user requirements. In this paper, we propose the use of Colored Petri Nets for component-oriented model development, model composition, and the verification of composed models using state-space analysis technique. We present a case study of an elevator model as a proof of concept. Our case study explains the proposed process of developing and composing CPN-based model components and verifying the composed model using state-space analysis.

This position paper summarizes the inputs of a group of experts from academia and industry presenting their view on chances and challenges of using ChatGPT within modeling and simulation education. The experts also address the need to evaluate continuous education as well as education of faculty members to address scholastic challenges and opportunities while meeting the expectation of industry. Generally, the use of ChatGPT is encouraged, but it needs to be embedded into an updated curriculum with more emphasis on validity constraints, systems thinking, and ethics.
