Background: The sustainable development goals (SDGs) aim to end HIV/AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. Understanding the current state of the HIV epidemic and its change over time is essential to this effort. This study assesses the current sex-specific HIV burden in 204 countries and territories and measures progress in the control of the epidemic. Methods: To estimate age-specific and sex-specific trends in 48 of 204 countries, we extended the Estimation and Projection Package Age-Sex Model to also implement the spectrum paediatric model. We used this model in cases where age and sex specific HIV-seroprevalence surveys and antenatal care-clinic sentinel surveillance data were available. For the remaining 156 of 204 locations, we developed a cohort-incidence bias adjustment to derive incidence as a function of cause-of-death data from vital registration systems. The incidence was input to a custom Spectrum model. To assess progress, we measured the percentage change in incident cases and deaths between 2010 and 2019 (threshold >75% decline), the ratio of incident cases to number of people living with HIV (incidence-to-prevalence ratio threshold <0·03), and the ratio of incident cases to deaths (incidence-to-mortality ratio threshold <1·0). Findings: In 2019, there were 36·8 million (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 35·1–38·9) people living with HIV worldwide. There were 0·84 males (95% UI 0·78–0·91) per female living with HIV in 2019, 0·99 male infections (0·91–1·10) for every female infection, and 1·02 male deaths (0·95–1·10) per female death. Global progress in incident cases and deaths between 2010 and 2019 was driven by sub-Saharan Africa (with a 28·52% decrease in incident cases, 95% UI 19·58–35·43, and a 39·66% decrease in deaths, 36·49–42·36). Elsewhere, the incidence remained stable or increased, whereas deaths generally decreased. Tensor network states constitute an important variational set of quantum states for numerical studies of strongly correlated systems in condensed-matter physics, as well as in mathematical physics. This is specifically true for finitely correlated states or matrix-product operators, designed to capture mixed states of one-dimensional quantum systems. It is a well-known open problem to find an efficient algorithm that decides whether a given matrix-product operator actually represents a physical state that in particular has no negative eigenvalues. We address and answer this question by showing that the problem is provably undecidable in the thermodynamic limit and that the bounded version of the problem is NP-hard (nondeterministic-polynomial-time hard) in the system size. Furthermore, we discuss numerous connections between tensor network methods and (seemingly) different concepts treated before in the literature, such as hidden Markov models and tensor trains.

An iterative space alternative tiling parallel algorithm for 3D finite difference stencil computations

Stencils are finite-difference algorithms for solving large-scale and high-dimension partial differential equations. Due to the data dependences among the iterative statements in Stencils, traditional Stencil computations are be executed serially, rather than in parallel. It's challenging to design an effective and scalable Stencil parallelized method. To address the issue of 3D data space computing, we present a serial execution model based on multi-layers symmetric Stencil method and time skewing techniques. Within this model, the iteration space is divided to multiple tiles based on time skewing, where the executive process is ordered by the sequence of tiles, and the nodes in each individual tile can be swept repeatedly to improve the data locality. In addition, we propose a novel 3D iterative space alternate tiling Stencil parallel method, which subdivides the iteration space along high dimension, and changes the execution sequence of tiles to reduce the data dependency and communication cost, where the partial order of tiles is still guaranteed. Experimental results demonstrate our proposed alternative tiling parallel method achieves better parallel efficiency and scalability compared with the domain-decomposition methods.

Reliable forecasts of extreme but rare events, such as earthquakes, financial crashes, and epileptic seizures, would render interventions and precautions possible. Therefore, forecasting methods have been developed which intend to raise an alarm if an extreme event is about to occur. In order to statistically validate the performance of a prediction system, it must be compared to the performance of a random predictor, which raises alarms independent of the events. Such a random predictor can be obtained by bootstrapping or analytically. We propose an analytic statistical framework which, in contrast to conventional methods, allows for validating independently the sensitivity and specificity of a forecasting method. Moreover, our method accounts for the periods during which an event has to remain absent or occur after a respective forecast.

In many fields of research nonlinear dynamical systems are investigated. When more than one process is measured, besides the distinct properties of the individual processes, their interactions are of interest. Often linear methods such as coherence are used for the analysis. The estimation of coherence can lead to false conclusions when applied without fulfilling several key assumptions. We introduce a data driven method to optimize the choice of the parameters for spectral estimation. Its applicability is demonstrated based on analytical calculations and exemplified in a simulation study. We complete our investigation with an application to nonlinear tremor signals in Parkinson's disease. In particular, we analyze electroencephalogram and electromyogram data.

Tissue engineering is a novel research field that covers a wide range of applications, which consist in developing biological substitutes capable to replace or repair injured or damaged tissues. In the top-down approach to tissue engineering, the biological substitutes are obtained by culturing living cells on scaffolds made of biocompatible and biodegradable materials. Cells are harvested from the patient, expanded in Petri dishes, and seeded onto scaffolds. Tissue engineering research is motivated by transplantable organ shortage. Mathematical and computational methods are used for modeling and designing scaffolds and for simulating in vivo and in vitro morphogenesis. To simulate how scaffolds are populated by cells, we developed three-dimensional computational models of cubic pore scaffolds for studying the energetic and geometric conditions that lead to a uniform and rapid cell seeding. We characterized the evolution of multicellular systems, taking into consideration the differential adhesion hypothesis, which states that cells move in their environment until they reach the minimum energy configuration of the system. Based on the Metropolis Monte Carlo method, the evolution of the cells' center of mass is analyzed, providing information about the distribution of cells in the scaffold. We also monitored the fraction of cells attached to the scaffold. © 2012 IEEE.
