Olive is of major eco-social importance for the Mediterranean Basin, a climate change and biodiversity hotspot of global relevance where remarkable climate change is expected over the next few decades with unknown ecosystem impacts. However, climate impact assessments on terrestrial ecosystems have long been constrained by a narrow methodological basis (ecological niche models, ENMs) that is correlative and hence largely omits key impact drivers such as trophic interactions and the effect of water availability, the latter being especially relevant to desertification- prone Mediterranean ecosystems. ENMs use correlative measures of water availability unsuitable for making projections about the future. To bridge this gap, mechanistic approaches such as physiologically-based weather- driven demographic models (PBDMs) may be used as they embed by design both the biology of trophic interactions and a mechanistic representation of soil water balance. Here we report progress towards assessing climate effects on olive culture across the Mediterranean region using mechanistic PBDMs that project regionally the multitrophic population dynamics of olive and olive fly as affected by daily weather and soil water balance.

Tissue engineering is a novel research field that covers a wide range of applications, which consist in developing biological substitutes capable to replace or repair injured or damaged tissues. In the top-down approach to tissue engineering, the biological substitutes are obtained by culturing living cells on scaffolds made of biocompatible and biodegradable materials. Cells are harvested from the patient, expanded in Petri dishes, and seeded onto scaffolds. Tissue engineering research is motivated by transplantable organ shortage. Mathematical and computational methods are used for modeling and designing scaffolds and for simulating in vivo and in vitro morphogenesis. To simulate how scaffolds are populated by cells, we developed three-dimensional computational models of cubic pore scaffolds for studying the energetic and geometric conditions that lead to a uniform and rapid cell seeding. We characterized the evolution of multicellular systems, taking into consideration the differential adhesion hypothesis, which states that cells move in their environment until they reach the minimum energy configuration of the system. Based on the Metropolis Monte Carlo method, the evolution of the cells' center of mass is analyzed, providing information about the distribution of cells in the scaffold. We also monitored the fraction of cells attached to the scaffold.

Tissue engineering's main objective is to create therapeutic constructs in vitro, capable to replace or remedy the functions of the tissue affected by different disease or totally destroyed. In order to obtain these constructs, the living cells are cultured on the different structure biomaterial. It has been shown that these constructs have properties which are similar to ones of human tissue, if the seeding is uniform. The paper presents a set of simulations of cell spreading on the plane surface of a biomaterial, based on the Metropolis Monte Carlo method. The model taken into account is formed of a cell aggregate placed on the planar surface of a parallelepipedic biomaterial. We study the influence of the cell-substrate and cell-medium interfacial tension parameters on the cell spreading process, analysing the number of cells attached to the biomaterial and the spreading rate of the cells. We also analyze the evolution of the centre of mass for the same value of cell-substrate interfacial tension and for different values of cell-medium interfacial tension. Experiments show an uniform and rapid cell spreading results if the cell-substrate and cell-medium interfacial tension have lower values. © 2011 IEEE.

The performance of FPGA increases continually, thus in many applications they can be an interesting alternative to DSPs. The aim of this work is to present the contribution of FPGAs for electrical machines control. The features of FPGAs and their environment will be presented first. Then a detailed description of the structure by Direct Torque Control DTC of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine is presented, Experimental results obtained on a prototyping platform are given to illustrate the efficiency and the benefits of the proposed approach and the various stages of implementation of this structure in FPGA. © 2011 IEEE.

Tissue engineering is a revolutionary domain which offers an alternative to traditional transplants, through in vitro synthesis of tissue constructs. Tissue constructs are obtained by harvesting cells extracted from patients, on a porous scaffold. The quality of the tissue construct and the rapidity with which it is obtained are two very important factors for clinical applications. The paper presents the evolution of a spherical multicellular aggregate located on the surface of a porous scaffold, observing the conditions that lead to an uniform and rapid distribution of cells in the scaffold. The evolution of the multicellular system was simulated using an algorithm based on the Metropolis Monte Carlo method, considering that cells tend to form a large number of connections with their neighbours (other cells or substrate). Based on different configurations obtained after running a number of Monte Carlo steps, the influence of the cell-cell interaction energy, the cellsubstrate interaction energy as well as the influence of the scaffold's geometry on the distribution of cells in the scaffold is studied. An analysis is made on the evolution of the cells' centre of mass , as well as on the evolution of the concentration of cells remained in the culture medium, after running a number of Monte Carlo steps.

The prediction of events is of substantial interest in many research areas. To evaluate the performance of prediction methods, the statistical validation of these methods is of utmost importance. Here, we compare an analytical validation method to numerical approaches that are based on Monte Carlo simulations. The comparison is performed in the field of the prediction of epileptic seizures. In contrast to the analytical validation method, we found that for numerical validation methods insufficient but realistic sample sizes can lead to invalid high rates of false positive conclusions. Hence we outline necessary preconditions for sound statistical tests on above chance predictions.

Tissue engineering is a part of regenerative medicine that handles in vitro creation of biological tissue substitutes which may repair or substitute injured or diseased parts of the body. In order to create tissue structures, biocompatible materials with a porous structure (scaffolds) are used as support for cells. The paper presents the stages of development and the software application that results, used as support for the study of cell seeding of a three-dimensional scaffold. The application uses an algorithm based on the Metropolis Monte Carlo method. The program was developed by using the Visual *** programming environment. Ideally, cell seeding should be fast and should achieve an uniform distribution of the cell population in the scaffold. In a first stage, the program creates the initial configuration of the system consisting of a cell suspension placed in the neighborhood of a scaffold immersed in cell culture medium. Starting from this configuration, using our software application the movement of the cells in suspension is studied as well as their potential of getting attached to the biomaterial. © 2010 IEEE.
