An integrated machine learning approach for identifying emergency rescue messages on social media during natural disasters

During large-scale disasters, emergency call centers are often overwhelmed by the large volume of rescue requests and calls for help. Consequently, people are turning to social media platforms to seek assistance. Rescue information posted on these platforms is extremely valuable for first responders to make informed rescue decisions. Therefore, the automatic identification of these requests from the vast amount of data posted on social media during crises is critical yet challenging. This work presents our ongoing research on applying deep learning techniques to extract actionable rescue information from social media during crises. We proposed a novel deep learning model that integrates a fine-tuned BERT to extract low-level statistical features and rule-based Regex filters to extract problem-specific features for emergency tweet identification. The proposed model was evaluated on labeled tweets collected from three hurricane events (Harvey, Ian, and Ida). Experimental results showed that our model performed better than several machine learning and deep learning methods in terms of the Area Under the Precision-Recall Curve (AUC-PR) metric for all events. This study contributed to the crisis informatics literature by introducing a novel deep learning approach for automatically identifying actionable information in social media, which can be adapted for similar natural language processing (NLP) tasks. © The Author(s) 2025.

Large Language Models (LLMs) are becoming ubiquitous to create intelligent virtual assistants that assist users in interacting with a system, as exemplified in marketing. Although LLMs have been discussed in modeling & simulation (M&S), the community has focused on generating code or explaining results. We examine the possibility of using LLMs to broaden access to simulations, by enabling non-simulation end-users to ask what-if questions in everyday language. Specifically, we discuss the opportunities and challenges in designing such an end-to-end system, divided into three broad phases. First, assuming the general case in which several simulation models are available, textual queries are mapped to the most relevant model. Second, if a mapping cannot be found, the query can be automatically reformulated and clarifying questions can be generated. Finally, simulation results are produced and contextualized for decision-making. Our vision for such system articulates long-term research opportunities spanning M&S, LLMs, information retrieval, and ethics.

Perturbations and Phase Transitions in Swarm Optimization Algorithms

Natural systems often exhibit chaotic behavior in their space-time evolution. Systems transiting between chaos and order manifest a potential to compute, as shown with cellular automata and artificial neural networks. We demonstrate that swarm optimization algorithms also exhibit transitions from chaos, analogous to a motion of gas molecules, when particles explore solution space disorderly, to order, when particles follow a leader, similar to molecules propagating along diffusion gradients in liquid solutions of reagents. We analyze these ‘phase-like’ transitions in swarm optimization algorithms using recurrence quantification analysis and Lempel-Ziv complexity estimation. We demonstrate that converging iterations of the optimization algorithms are statistically different from non-converging ones in a view of applied chaos, complexity and predictability estimating indicators. An identification of a key factor responsible for the intensity of their phase transition is the main contribution of this paper. We examined an optimization as a process with three variable factors – an algorithm, number generator and optimization function. More than 9.000 executions of the optimization algorithm revealed that the nature of an applied algorithm itself is the main source of the phase transitions. Some of the algorithms exhibit larger transition-shifting behavior while others perform rather transition-steady computing. Purpose: This paper aims to investigate the effects of thermal radiation on magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) bioconvection nonlinear complex structure flow of non-Newtonian fluids such as Casson, Williamson and Sisko fluids. Design/methodology/approach: The nonlinear coupled fundamental equations governing the steady, incompressible combined with Casson–Williamson–Sisko fluids flow over an exponential sheet are reduced to ordinary differential equations using appropriate transformations. Open-source platforms such as Google Colab and Python are used. Results, performance, accuracy and correlation are examined with neural networking, Levenberg-Marquardt, machine learning, artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms and linear regression. Findings: Numerical and graphical results are presented to observe the impact of physical parameters. The prospect of AI tools, particularly Levenberg-Marquardt, increases the accuracy of developed complex fluid dynamics models. Besides, the further scope of machine learning in the hybrid nature of fluids is also presented. It is concluded that Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm is the most suitable for the simulation of boundary layer flow with high accuracy, smooth regression curves and the minimum rate of error. It is observed that the range of 10−8 for mean squared error shows the good fit of the model. It is noted that by increasing the Casson and Williamson fluids’ parameters, the velocity profile decreases. Both concentration and motile density decrease with an increasing values of Schmidt and Peclet numbers. Originality/value: The existing literature lacks a comparative analysis of neural networks and machine learning in predicting boundary layer flow using AI-based approaches, linear regression algorithm for bioconvection MHD flow of Casson–Williamson–Sisko fluids with thermal radiation in existing literature. This effort is devoted to fill the said gap. © 2025, Emerald Publishing Limited.

Real-Time pedestrian simulation for open-world games involves aggressive behavior simplification and culling to keep computational cost under control, but it is diffficult to predict whether these techniques will become unrealistic in certain situations. We propose a method of perceptually simulating highly realistic pedestrian behavior in virtual cities in realtime. Designers build a highly realistic simulation, from which a perceptually identical "perceptual simulation" is generated. Although the perceptual simulation simulates only a small portion of the world at a time, and does so with inexpensive approximations, it can be statistically guaranteed that the results are perceptually indistinguishable from those of the original simulation. The buoyant Marangoni convection heat transfer in a differentially heated cavity is numerically studied. The cavity is filled with water-Ag, water-Cu, water-Al2O3, and water-TiO2 nanofiuids. The governing equations are based on the equations involving the stream function, vorticity, and temperature. The dimensionless forms of the governing equations are solved by the finite difference （FD） scheme consisting of the alternating direction implicit （ADI） method and the tri-diagonal matrix algorithm （TDMA）. It is found that the increase in the nanoparticle concentration leads to the decrease in the flow rates in the secondary cells when the convective thermocapillary and the buoyancy force have similar strength. A critical Marangoni number exists, below which increasing the Marangoni number decreases the average Nusselt number, and above which increasing the Marangoni number increases the average Nusselt number. The nanoparticles play a crucial role in the critical Marangoni number.

The discipline of component-based modeling and simulation offers promising gains including reductions in development cost, time, and system complexity. This paradigm promotes the use and reuse of modular components for adequate development of complex simulations. Achieving effective and meaningful model reuse through the composition of components still remains a daunting challenge. 'Composability', an integral part of this challenge, is the capability to select and assemble model components in various combinations to satisfy specific user requirements. In this paper, we propose the use of Colored Petri Nets for component-oriented model development, model composition, and the verification of composed models using state-space analysis technique. We present a case study of an elevator model as a proof of concept. Our case study explains the proposed process of developing and composing CPN-based model components and verifying the composed model using state-space analysis. © 2021 IEEE.

This paper presents a framework for distributed simulation that is based on system-theoretic and logical-process concepts. The framework describes a three-part world-view for developing simulation models. These are modeling formalisms, abstract simulators, and computational environments. A unified view of time and causality allows for the application of system-theoretic notions of causality within a distributed simulation environment. Within this framework, we introduce a unified notion of causality. Further we describe an approach for developing distributed simulation models which evolve from modeling constructs to simulation algorithms and their implementations. The framework is exemplified using the Discrete EVent System Specification (DEVS) modeling formalism, its abstract simulator, and a parallel algorithm that implements the abstract simulator.

To obtain the finite reachable graph of a Discrete Event System Specification (DEVS) network, this paper uses a subclass of DEVS, called finite and deterministic DEVS. This subclass has been restricted to have (1) finite sets of both events and states, (2) the rational-number time advance function, (3) the time independent external transition, and (4) the selective reschedule functionality. For abstracting the infinite-state behavior to a finite- state reachable graph, we use the clock zone that is a conjunction of inequalities of clocks. A clock zone-based generating algorithm of the reachable graph of the coupled DEVS is proposed and its completeness and complexity are addressed.
