An end-to-end fiber-based network has the potential to offer multi-gigabit fixed access to end users. However, a fiber network’s biggest hurdle is delivering that fiber access to the end user. Especially in places where fiber is non-existent, it can be time-consuming and costly to deploy, resulting in Operators experiencing a long delay in realizing a return on their *** work investigates transmission data from fixed broadband wireless access in the mmWave band in 5G. With the increasing interest in this domain, it is worth investigating the transmission characteristic of the data and utilizing the same to build more sophisticated capabilities. Existing datasets for the mmWave band are detailed but generated from simulated environments. In this work, we introduce a dataset built from the collection of real-world transmission data from fixed broadband wireless access in mmWave band device(RWM6050). The goal of this data is to enable self-configuration capability based on transmission characteristics. Towards this goal, we present an online machine learning-based approach that can classify transmission characteristics with real-time training. We also present two more advanced temporal models for more accurate classifications. We demonstrate that it is possible to detect the transmission angle and distance directly from the analysis of transmission data with very high accuracy. We achieved up to 99% accuracy on the combined classification task. Finally, we outline some interesting future research scopes based on the collected data.

This paper reports on Natural Language Processing (NLP) as a technique to analyze phenomena towards specifying agent-based models (ABM). The objective of the ABM NLP Analyzer is to facilitate non-simulationists to actively engage in the learning and collaborative designing of ABMs. The NLP model identifies candidate agents, candidate agent attributes, and candidate rules all of which non-simulationists can later evaluate for feasibility. IBM's Watson Natural Language Understanding (NLU) and Knowledge Studio were used in order to annotate, evaluate, extract agents, agent attributes, and agent rules from unstructured descriptions of phenomena. The software, and related agent-attribute-rule characterization, provides insight into a simple but useful means of conceptualizing and specifying baseline ABMs. Further, it emphasizes on how to approach the design of ABMs without the use of NLP by focusing on the identification of agent, attributes and rules.

Software Intrusion Detection Evaluation System: A Cost-Based Evaluation of Intrusion Detection Capability

In this paper, we consider a cost-based extension of intrusion detection capability (CID). An objective metric motivated by information theory is presented and based on this formulation;a package for computing the intrusion detection capability of intrusion detection system (IDS), given certain input parameters is developed using Java. In order to determine the expected cost at each IDS operating point, the decision tree method of analysis is employed, and plots of expected cost and intrusion detection capability against false positive rate were generated. The point of intersection between the maximum intrusion detection capability and the expected cost is selected as the optimal operating point. Considering an IDS in the context of its intrinsic ability to detect intrusions at the least expected cost, findings revealed that the optimal operating point is the most suitable for the given IDS. The cost-based extension is used to select optimal operating point, calculate expected cost, and compare two actual intrusion detectors. The proposed cost-based extension of intrusion detection capability will be very useful to information technology (IT), telecommunication firms, and financial institutions, for making proper decisions in evaluating the suitability of an IDS for a specific operational environment.

Situation assessment through collaborative human-computer interaction

He earned an M.S. degree in Computer Science from the University of Delaware in 1994. Scott has worked on projects in automated classification plan recognition interface design and modeling & simulation to support various aspects of the Naval Air Warfare mission. He is interested in humun-computer interaction artificial intelligence natural language pvocessing modeling & simulation and open systems architectures. Jim Ballas:is a scientist at the Navy Center for Applied Research in Artificial Intelligence at the Naval Research Lab. He has a Ph.D. in Applied Experimental Psychology has been active in seueral areas of human-computer systems design and integration and has forty-two publications and technical reports. Prior to his position at NRL. he held faculty appointments at Georgetown and George Mason University. He is a member of the Acoustical Society of America the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society and Sigma Xi. He served in U.S. Army Intelligence and was awarded the Bronze Star for service in Vietnam.

Data fusion has been characterized as taking place at four levels oi abstraction: the unit level, the situation level, the threat level, and the resource allocation level. A unit level characterization tries to pin down the attributes of individual platform objects, At the situation level, organized groups of units, such as battle groups, are explored. At the threat level and resource allocation level, reasoning about possible enemy intentions and possible responses is undertaken. Little work, however has been done concerning some of the higher levels of abstraction, namely the force and threat levels. This paper presents an approach toward situation assessment which includes explicit conceptualizations of forces and threats. Graphical representations of these forces and threats are designed to enhance the unit level depiction without obscuring it. This paper explores a novel style of user interface-one designed to allow collaboration between the person and the machine, enabling a tactical assessment which is superior to one in which either the person or the machine works in isolation. The paper will then describe a natural division of responsibilities between person and machine and illustrate the benefit of such a collaborative system in light of an example based on a warfare scenario.

This paper presents a framework for testing at the I/O behavior level in a service-oriented architecture (SOA) environment. The framework derives minimal testable I/O pairs from a service component's behavior specifications. These minimal testable I/O pairs are mapped to reusable primitives and then synthesized into test models in the Discrete Event System Specification (DEVS) formalism to meet different test objectives. We present the system theoretic foundation for I/O behavior testing and describe the inherently re-usable test development framework.

The nature of the emerging field of web-based simulation is examined in terms of its relationship to the fundamental aspects of simulation research and practice. The presentation, assuming a form of debate, is based on a panel session held at the first International Conference on Web-Based modeling and simulation, which was sponsored by the Society for computer simulation during 11-14 January 1998 in San Diego, California. While no clear "winner" is evident in this debate, the issues raised here certainly merit ongoing attention and contemplation.

While interpolating between successive postures of an articulated figure is not mathematically difficult, it is much more useful to provide postural transitions that are behaviorally reasonable and that avoid collisions with nearby objects. We describe such a posture interpolator which begins with a number of pre-defined static postures. A finite state machine controls the transitions from any posture to a goal posture by finding the shortest path of required motion sequences between the two. If the motion between any two postures is not collision free, a collision avoidance strategy is invoked and the posture is changed to one that satisfies the required goal while respecting object and agent integrity.< >

Software architecture is high-level software design, dealing with the structure and organization of software systems. A software architecture is defined in terms of computational components and interactions among those components. Architecture description languages (ADLs) represent architecture-level software designs. Different ADLs often have different intents; e.g., Rapide supports architecture simulation and Acme is intended to be both an ADL and an ADL interchange format. Experimental applications of two ADLs were conducted to determine the effectiveness of ADLs for architecture-level analysis of simulation systems; one of them is reported. Acme was used to model the architecture of ModSAF and to analyze its run-time performance. The model was used to analyze execution time at the component and federate levels and to estimate the maximum number of internal and external simulation entities that could be supported by the ModSAF architecture. The experiment showed that ADLs could model important features of simulation system architectures.

Interference is one of the most critical issues in the cellular Device-to-Device (D2D) networks. The sharing of radio resources in cellular and D2D communications offers spectrum efficiency advantages for the cellular network. However, resource sharing also introduces interference, leading to a reduction in the quality of service experienced by users. In this paper, we propose an adversarial Multi-Armed Bandit learning-based transmission Power Control method called MAB-PC for both cellular and D2D transmitters. The objective of this method is to ensure the minimum service quality for users, considering the minimum spectral efficiency and maximum block error rate. Additionally, to address the conflicting objectives of D2D and cellular communications, MAB-PC is modeled as a Pareto optimization problem for D2D transmitters. MAB-PC is a distributed method that minimizes signaling overhead and relies solely on local Channel State Information (CSI). The effectiveness of the proposed method is evaluated based on reliability, total data rate, spectral efficiency, block error rate, and outage probability, demonstrating superior performance compared to its counterpart.

Large Language Models (LLMs) are becoming ubiquitous to create intelligent virtual assistants that assist users in interacting with a system, as exemplified in marketing. Although LLMs have been discussed in modeling & simulation (M&S), the community has focused on generating code or explaining results. We examine the possibility of using LLMs to broaden access to simulations, by enabling non-simulation end-users to ask what-if questions in everyday language. Specifically, we discuss the opportunities and challenges in designing such an end-to-end system, divided into three broad phases. First, assuming the general case in which several simulation models are available, textual queries are mapped to the most relevant model. Second, if a mapping cannot be found, the query can be automatically reformulated and clarifying questions can be generated. Finally, simulation results are produced and contextualized for decision-making. Our vision for such system articulates long-term research opportunities spanning M&S, LLMs, information retrieval, and ethics.
