In this paper, we propose an efficient and low complexity image coding algorithm based on the lifting wavelet transform and listless modified SPIHT (LWT-LMSPIHT). LWT-LMSPIHT jointly considers the advantages of progressive transmission and spatial scalability that were not fully provided by the SPIHT algorithm, thus it outperforms the SPIHT at low bit rates coding. The coding efficiency of LWT-LMSPIHT comes from three aspects. The lifting scheme lowers the number of arithmetic operations of the wavelet transform. Moreover, a significance reordering of the modified SPIHT ensures that it codes more significant information earlier in the bit stream belonging to the lower frequency bands than SPIHT to better exploit the energy compaction of the wavelet coefficients. Finally, a listless structure further reduces the amount of memory and improves the speed of compression by more than 47% for a 512 times 512 image, as compared with the SPIHT algorithm.

The performance of speaker verification systems is often compromised under real-world environments. For example, variations in handset characteristics could cause severe performance degradation. This paper presents a novel method to overcome this problem by using a non-linear handset mapper. Under this method, a mapper is constructed by training an elliptical basis function network using distorted speech features as inputs and the corresponding clean features as the desired outputs. During feature recuperation, clean features are recovered by feeding the distorted features to the feature mapper. The recovered features are then presented to a speaker model as if they were derived from clean speech. Experimental evaluations based on 258 speakers of the TIMIT and NTIMIT corpuses suggest that the feature mappers improve the verification performance remarkably.

A novel cepstrum based channel compensation technique is proposed for speaker verification. Under this approach, channel cepstra are derived from the direct measurements of the frequency responses of telephone handsets. Specifically, they are determined by truncating the inverse Fourier transform of the log magnitude of the interpolated handsets' frequency responses. The proposed method is readily applicable to telephone based speaker verification. Experimental evaluations based on the telephone YOHO corpora suggest that the proposed channel compensation method strikes a good balance between verification performance and computational efficiency.

For the classical watermark embedment model I = 1 + /spl alpha/W, the corresponding watermark detection has its limitation in its need of a fixed parameter for extracting watermarks. If the extraction parameter is too large, we cannot extract the watermark from the image that contains watermarks; if it is too small, the extracted watermarks may be blurred. This paper proposes a novel watermark extraction method. First, we treat the watermark information as noise for the watermarked image in its spatial domain. We then magnify the noise before detection. Next, we recover the watermark information by adjusting the extracted data from the frequency domain according to our global minimum method. Experimental results show that our watermark extraction method is more valid and accurate than the classical method. It can greatly reduce extraction errors.

In this paper, we proposed a novel weight-based bandwidth allocation algorithm (WBA) for transporting compressed video traffic using feedback. Extensive simulation using a modified NIST simulator is conducted to evaluate its performance under a general weight-based share policy. Our results demonstrate that the WBA algorithm is capable of allocating bandwidth fairly for the minimum cell rate (MCR) plus weighted allocation fairness criteria among competitive compressed video sources, and is capable of reallocating smoothly when there are renegotiations of the minimum guaranteed cell rate and weight by some connections. We also show that WBA algorithm is flexible for the reallocation when a new connection is admitted. Furthermore, when unutilized network bandwidth becomes available, our algorithm is capable of exploiting it to dynamically allocate unused bandwidth.

Recently a number of nonlinear precoding algorithms have been developed for designing a downlink transmit signal that is constrained by some nonlinearity, such as one-bit quantization, power-amplifier saturation or constant modulus. These methods use iterative search algorithms to directly design the signal that is transmitted from each antenna. Since the dimension of the search space equals the number of antennas, the computational complexity of these approaches can be high for massive MIMO scenarios. Thus, in this paper we pose the problem in a smaller dimensional space by constraining the signal prior to the nonlinearity to be the output of a linear precoder. The search is then over the vector of predistorted symbols at the input to the linear precoder, which is typically much smaller than the number of antennas. We focus on algorithms that minimize the bit error rate at the receivers, and show that performance can be obtained that is similar to algorithms that operate directly in the antenna domain. © 2018 IEEE.

We describe a system for automatic objects extraction and dynamic bitrate allocation in a second generation object based video coder, targeting surveillance sequences. We combine model-based statistical change detection with a multiresolution-based approach for object extraction. Masks are redefined at a block level resolution and refined to improve the coding quality exploiting spatio-temporal considerations. We propose a dynamic adaptation of the quantization step of the MPEG-4 coder, based on motion information of the extracted objects. The results outperform traditional frame based coders at very low bit-rates. The masks proposed dramatically improve the coding performance, even when compared to ideally extracted masks.

The quadtree partition is often used in fractal image compression to achieve variable bit rates. In this paper, we propose a split decision function based on fuzzy integrals - fuzzy mean error (FME), that can improve image coding quality while speeding up the encoding process. Our proposed split function is compared with other commonly used split decisions. In the paper, we also demonstrate that it is difficult for a split decision function to obtain an a priori estimate of the threshold for encoding a given image at a given quality level.

Recent advances in medical imaging have resulted in the introduction of dual-modality scanners which can simultaneously acquire two independent imaging modalities, such as positron emission tomography (PET) and computed tomography (CT) image data in a single session. These multi-dimensional PET-CT data contain both the functional and anatomical information of the human body, thus, providing the ability to identify anatomical structures of interest and then overlaying the result onto the corresponding functional structure, as an example. The utilization of the combined functional and anatomical information has been proven to be an effective approach in diagnosis and interpretation of certain medical conditions. However, the increase in image dimensions has not been accompanied with new visualization techniques, with the use of two-dimensional (2D) display being the norm. In this study, we propose a new approach to three-dimensional (3D) visualization of dual-modality PET-CT data in order to complement the 2D visualization and potentially improve medical diagnosis and interpretation. We have design and implemented a prototype visualization technique using real-time volume rendering and image fusion running on a commodity graphics card. We further propose the application of interactive segmentation of 3D anatomical structures from CT data which can be used to identify the corresponding functional structure in volume visualization

Image registration is enabling in integrating complementary and heterogeneous information from multiple images, and is particularly important for high-quality healthcare. To improve registration efficiency and accuracy, in this paper, a two-resolution-scale registration approach is proposed. Firstly, to speed up calculation, the images will be decomposed into multi-scale and multi-band representation by steerable pyramid that outweighs wavelets by providing invariance for both translation and rotation. Then, to avoid transformation error accumulation and magnification during the parameter transmission in the traditional multi-scale registration, the registration will be performed only in the lowest-resolution scale and the highest-resolution scale. In the former scale, the global rotation and scaling parameters will be calculated rapidly and accurately, which then will be directly used to initialize optimization in the latter scale, where, the translation differences will be corrected. The experiments on medical images demonstrate that the proposed registration is of good performance.
