Images are often compressed using algorithms such as JPEG and JPEG-2000. Retrieving these kinds of compressed images typically requires processing them into the uncompressed spatial form in which features are extracted for further analysis. This approach incurs many pre-processing operations, especially for large image archives. The paper studies the common features in different compressed domains so that indexing can be done directly from their respective domains. By employing a subband filter model, filters in the block-based discrete cosine transform (BDCT) and wavelet transform (WT) can be directly compared. We have found that both filters share similar characteristics. In fact, the lowpass filters in the two transforms are the same for the Haar wavelet. Therefore, due to the filter similarity, similar features can be extracted from the BDCT and WT subband outputs. We have also studied the effect of compression on their similarity. Despite the high compression, high similarity can still be found. Both our theoretical and experimental studies confirm that common features can be extracted directly from the compressed domains, irrespective of the value of the compression ratio and the use of BDCT or WT.

The use of multiscale directional decomposition, achieved by combining a Laplacian pyramid and a directional filter bank, is studied for texture classification. We first demonstrate the importance of the multiscale analysis of directional texture features. Then, it is found that directional analysis is suitable for characterizing structured textures, but not random textures. Thus, structured and random textures are separated by employing an entropy-based measure on the multiscale directional features. Through this pre-filtering step, structured textures are extracted for further classification, so that the overall retrieval performance can be enhanced. Experimental results showed that this pre-filtering step can significantly improve the overall retrieval accuracy.

Restoration of color quantized images is rarely addressed in the literature especially when the images are color quantized with halftoning. Conventional color image restoration algorithms are not suitable for handling this problem. A new restoration algorithm based on a genetic algorithm is presented in this paper. This algorithm makes use of the available color palette and the mechanism of a halftoning process to derive useful a priori information for restoration. Simulation results showed that it was able to provide a very promising restoration result.

In this paper, a computerized plant species recognition system (CPSRS) is presented. CPSRS is a Web-based application, which provides a familiar and efficient way to search and identify plant species in the field. It is built on the Java Web infrastructure to support platform-independent application. The Java applets and servlets are adopted to balance the computing burden in both client and server. The architecture of CPSRS is introduced to show how it is designed and works. Two types of plant species retrieval methods, text-based information retrieval and content-based leaf retrieval are discussed. With the text-based information retrieval method, the exact information of plant species is retrieved from the database according to the input searching criteria. For the content-based leaf retrieval, experimental results show that a recall rate of about 71.4% can be achieved when top five returned images are considered.

For human face images, the region of human face (ROHF) is considered to be the most important part, while the background is allowed to have degraded quality because it is considered to be less important. In this paper, a human face detection algorithm is combined with the set partitioning in hierarchical trees (SPIHT) algorithm for wavelet-based image coding. The human face detection algorithm is employed to automatically determine the ROHF in a human face image. The ROHF mask is generated in the wavelet domain. The wavelet coefficients in the ROHF mask of the LL subband are scaled to ensure that they are encoded with a higher priority. Finally the SPIHT algorithm is directly employed to encode the resulting coefficients progressively. Experimental results show that the ROHF exhibits much better quality than that of the background region at any bit rate. The encoded bitstream based on this approach is fully embedded and supports progressive transmission.

Video staging has been proposed as a mechanism for video streaming proxy servers to better exploit the temporal locality of requests made by clients. It divides a video stream into two parts, i.e. local storage and remote access. It opens a new possibility of scheduling in the video streaming proxy server, with the introduction of disk scheduling on top of network scheduling. However, a simple division cannot put all these resources into good use. We devise a novel video staging algorithm. It considers memory consumption, network bandwidth and disk access requirements so that these resources usage can be optimized accordingly.

In many biometric systems, the scores of multiple samples (e.g. utterances) are averaged and the average score is compared against a decision threshold for decision making. The average score, however, may not be optimal because the distribution of the scores is ignored. To address this limitation, we have recently proposed a fusion model that incorporates the score distribution by making the fusion weights dependent on the dispersion between the frame-based scores and the prior score statistics obtained from training data. As the fusion weights are data-dependent, the positions of scores in the score sequences become detrimental to the final fused scores. We propose to enhance the fusion model by sorting the score sequences before fusion takes place. The fusion model was evaluated on a speaker verification task where each claimant utters two utterances in a verification session. Results demonstrate that fusion of sorted scores has the effect of maximizing the dispersion between the client scores and the impostor scores, making the verification process more reliable. Compared with our previous work, where no sorting was applied, the new approach reduces the equal error rate by 11 %.

The paper proposes a multiple-source, multiple-sample fusion approach to identity verification. Fusion is performed at two levels, intramodal and intermodal. In intramodal fusion, the scores of multiple samples (e.g., utterances or video shots) obtained from the same modality are linearly combined, where the combination weights are dependent on the difference between the score values and a user-dependent reference score obtained during enrollment. This is followed by intermodal fusion in which the means of intramodal fused scores obtained from different modalities are fused. The final fused score is then used for decision making. This two-level fusion approach was applied to audio-visual biometric authentication; experimental results based on the XM2VTSDB corpus show that the proposed fusion approach can achieve an error rate reduction of up to 83%.

Acoustic mismatch between the training and recognition conditions presents one of the serious challenges faced by speaker recognition researchers today. The goal of channel compensation is to achieve performance approaching that of a "matched condition" system while avoiding the need for a large amount of training data. It is important to ensure that the channel compensation algorithms in these systems compensate the channel variation instead of speaker variation. This paper addresses the problem of unsupervised compensation in which the features of a test utterance are transformed to fit the clean speaker model and gender-dependent background model. Specifically, a feature-based transformation is estimated based on the statistical difference between a test utterance and a composite acoustic model formed by combining the speaker and background models. By transforming the features to fit both models, the transformation is implicitly constrained. Experimental results based on the 2001 NIST evaluation set show that the proposed transformation approach achieves significant improvement in both equal error rate and minimum detection cost as compared to cepstral mean subtraction, Znorm and short-time Gaussianization.

This paper presents an approach that uses articulatory features (AF) derived from spectral features for telephone-based speaker verification. To minimize the acoustic mismatch caused by different handsets, handset-specific normalization is applied to the spectral features before the AF are extracted. Experimental results based on 150 speakers using 10 different handsets show that AF contain useful speaker-specific information for speaker verification and the use of handset-specific normalization significantly lowers the error rates under the handset mismatched conditions. Results also demonstrate that fusing the scores obtained from an AF-based system with those obtained from a spectral feature-based (MFCC) system helps lower the error rates of the individual systems.
