5-[123I]iodo-A-85380, namely 5-iodo-3-(2(S)-azetidinylmethoxy)pyridine, is a new, highly selective radioligand with favourable properties for in vivo imaging of neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) using single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). The aim of this work was to study the identifiability and stability of nAChR parameters in baboon brain using different tracer kinetic modelling strategies with shortened scan durations. Dynamic SPECT imaging studies were performed on two anaesthetised baboons for 3 hours. Kinetic analysis based on 2- and 3-compartment models was used to derive the receptor parameters, including the binding potential (BP) and the volume of distribution (Vd), using the arterial plasma time-activity curves as the input function. Based on the 3-compartment model, Vd was selected as an appropriate outcome measure to assess the parameter stability due to high variability in estimation of BP, Time-stability analysis indicated that 90 mins of data collection generated stable outcome measure for 3-compartment model and the use of the 2-compartment model produced outcome measure with a larger bias. Thus, the 3-compartment model is the model of choice for analysis of 5-(123I]iodo-A-85380 kinetics and the 2-compartment model is useful only when the data acquisition time is sufficiently long. Image registration is critical for making diagnostic decision and essential for image-guided surgery. To improve the quality and accuracy of healthcare, efficient registration is highly demanded. However, because of the non-rigid deformations caused by heartbeat and breath, abdominal image registration remains a challenging task. To address these issues, an automatic and elastic registration for abdominal images is proposed. The algorithm is divided into three steps: efficient non-iterative affine registration;elastic motion field extraction based on active contours;elastic registration based on motion field. The validation of the method on monomodality and multimodality abdominal images has demonstrated that the algorithm is reliable and efficient. Copyright © 2006 IFAC.

In accordance with the ISO/IEC FDIS 19794-6 standard an iris-biometric fusion of image metric-based and Hamming distance (HD) comparison scores is presented. In order to demonstrate the applicability of a knowledge transfer from image quality assessment to iris recognition, Peak signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR), Structural Similarity Index Measure (SSIM), Local Edge Gradients metric (LEG), Edge Similarity Score (ESS), Local Feature Based Visual Security (LFBVS), and Visual Information Fidelity (VIF) are applied to iris textures, i.e. query textures are interpreted as noisy representations of registered ones. Obtained scores are fused with traditional HD scores obtained from iris-codes generated by different feature extraction algorithms. Experimental evaluations on the CASIA-v3 iris database confirm the soundness of the proposed approach.

In Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) Radio Link Control (RLC) losses severely affect the Quality of Service (QoS) due to high error probability. Therefore, for any video quality prediction model, it is important to model the radio-link loss behaviour. In this paper we evaluate the impact of the radio access network on the end-to-end QoS for H.264 encoded video. In order to characterize the QoS level, a learning model based on Adaptive Neural Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) is proposed that takes into account the RLC loss models to predict the video quality in terms of the Mean Opinion Score (MOS). The RLC loss models considered are 2-state Markov models with variable mean burst lengths. The aim of the paper is two-fold. First, to find the impact of QoS parameters in both the physical and application layer on end-to-end video quality. Second, to propose a prediction model based on ANFIS to predict video quality over UMTS networks. ANFIS is well suited for video quality prediction over error prone and bandwidth restricted UMTS as it combines the advantages of neural networks and fuzzy systems. The ANFIS model is trained with a combination of application and physical layer parameters. The performance of the proposed model is validated with unseen dataset. These studies should help in the understanding of the impact of both the application and physical layer parameters on end-to-end video quality and in QoS control methods and adaptation.

The aim of this paper is to assess the impact of devices on Quality of Experience (QoE) of the user. As the types of video content viewed over handheld devices increases e.g. streaming video, it is important to evaluate the impact of the end device on video quality assessment. In this paper subjective tests were conducted with QCIF (176×144) videos over two devices - Personal Computer (PC) and mobile handset with 90 test conditions. The dataset was generated with a combination of parameters associated with the access network (block error rates and mean burst lengths), H.264 codec related parameter (sender bitrates) and content types. Subjects favoured PC test over handset test in almost all test scenarios. These studies should help in context-aware services in deciding the appropriate encoding parameters based on type of device being used to receive content.

The Quality of Service (QoS) of Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) is severely affected by the losses occurring in Radio Link Control (RLC) due to high error probability. Therefore, for any video quality prediction model, it is important to model the radio-link loss behaviour appropriately. In addition, video content has an impact on video quality under same network conditions. The aim of this paper is to present video quality prediction models for objective, non-intrusive prediction of H.264 encoded video for all content types combining parameters both in the physical and application layer over UMTS networks. In order to characterize the QoS level, a learning model based on Adaptive Neural Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) is proposed to predict the video quality in terms of the Mean Opinion Score (MOS). ANFIS is well suited for video quality prediction over error prone and bandwidth restricted UMTS as it combines the advantages of neural networks and fuzzy systems. The loss models considered are 2-state Markov models with variable Mean Burst Lengths (MBLs) depicting the various UMTS scenarios. The proposed model is trained with a combination of physical and application layer parameters and validated with unseen dataset. Preliminary results show that good prediction accuracy was obtained from the model. The work should help in the development of a reference-free video prediction model and Quality of Service (QoS) control methods for video over UMTS networks.

The feasibility-seeking approach provides a systematic scheme to manage and solve complex constraints for continuous problems, and we explore it for the floorplanning problems with increasingly heterogeneous constraints. The classic legality constraints can be formulated as the union of convex sets. However, the convergence of conventional projection-based algorithms is not guaranteed when the constraints sets are non-convex, which is the case with unions of convex sets. In this work, we propose a resetting strategy to greatly eliminate the divergence issue of the projection-based algorithm for the feasibility-seeking formulation. Furthermore, the superiorization methodology (SM), which lies between feasibility-seeking and constrained optimization, is firstly applied to floorplanning. The SM uses perturbations to steer the iterates of a feasibility-seeking algorithm to a feasible solution with shorter total wirelength. The proposed algorithmic flow is extendable to tackle various constraints and variants of floorplanning problems, e.g., floorplanning with I/O assignment problems. We have evaluated the proposed algorithm on the MCNC benchmarks. We can obtain legal floorplans only two times slower than the branch-And-bound method in its current prototype using MATLAB, with only 3 % wirelength inferior to the optimal results. We evaluate the effectiveness of the algorithmic flow by considering the constraints of I/O assignment, and our algorithm achieves 8 % improvement on wirelength. © 2023 IEEE.

We propose a novel decoding technique for DFT-based error control codes, which is robust against quantization and additive noise. The proposed algorithm simultaneously determines the number and the positions of the corrupted samples. We show that in contrast to conventional decoding techniques, the proposed decoding method is stable in the presence of quantization and additive noise.

Data clustering is intensively used in signal processing in tasks such as multimedia compression, segmentation and pattern matching. In this work we extend the use of principal curves in clustering to complex multidimensional datasets. The use of principal curve in clustering is limited for high complexity data. Automatic parameterization of the principal curve to assure good results for different datasets is a difficult task. We propose to use the tree structure to capture the general settlement of the data. Using this topology, regions of the dataset can be extracted, individually clustered using the principal curve and then optimally recombined. The experiments show the improvement of the new method over the principal curve based clustering and the good performance compared to other clustering methods.

Modern health care delivery relies heavily on digital imaging technologies, which provide powerful tools for diagnosis, treatment and surgery. Many picture archiving and communications systems (PACS) have been developed for medical image acquisition, archiving, communication, retrieval, processing, distribution and display. However, current PACS systems usually require dedicated hardware licensed software and considerable maintenance. The retrieval and manipulation of medical image data are therefore fairly expensive, complex and inconvenient. The authors presented a prototype Web-based system which enables efficient retrieval and manipulation of digital medical image data on a much wider scale and at much lower cost than existing systems.
