Building artificial intelligence (AI) systems that adhere to ethical standards is a complex problem. Even though a multitude of guidelines for the design and development of such trustworthy AI systems exist, these guidelines focus on high-level and abstract requirements for AI systems, and it is often very difficult to assess if a specific system fulfills these requirements. The Z-Inspection® process provides a holistic and dynamic framework to evaluate the trustworthiness of specific AI systems at different stages of the AI lifecycle, including intended use, design, and development. It focuses, in particular, on the discussion and identification of ethical issues and tensions through the analysis of socio-technical scenarios and a requirement-based framework for ethical and trustworthy AI. This article is a methodological reflection on the Z-Inspection® process. We illustrate how high-level guidelines for ethical and trustworthy AI can be applied in practice and provide insights for both AI researchers and AI practitioners. We share the lessons learned from conducting a series of independent assessments to evaluate the trustworthiness of real-world AI systems, as well as key recommendations and practical suggestions on how to ensure a rigorous trustworthiness assessment throughout the lifecycle of an AI system. The results presented in this article are based on our assessments of AI systems in the healthcare sector and environmental monitoring, where we used the framework for trustworthy AI proposed in the Ethics Guidelines for Trustworthy AI by the European Commission’s High-Level Expert Group on AI. However, the assessment process and the lessons learned can be adapted to other domains and include additional frameworks.

The term Research Software Engineer, or RSE, emerged a little over 10 years ago as a way to represent individuals working in the research community but focusing on software development. The term has been widely adopted and there are a number of high-level definitions of what an RSE is. However, the roles of RSEs vary depending on the institutional context they work in. At one end of the spectrum, RSE roles may look similar to a traditional research role. At the other extreme, they resemble that of a software engineer in industry. Most RSE roles inhabit the space between these two extremes. Therefore, providing a straightforward, comprehensive definition of what an RSE does and what experience, skills and competencies are required to become one is challenging. In this community paper we define the broad notion of what an RSE is, explore the different types of work they undertake, and define a list of foundational competencies as well as values that outline the general profile of an RSE. Further research and training can build upon this foundation of skills and focus on various aspects in greater detail. We expect that graduates and practitioners will have a larger and more diverse set of skills than outlined here. On this basis, we elaborate on the progression of these skills along different dimensions. We look at specific types of RSE roles, propose recommendations for organisations, and give examples of future specialisations. Uncertainty in medical image segmentation tasks, especially inter-rater variability, arising from differences in interpretations and annotations by various experts, presents a significant challenge in achieving consistent and reliable image segmentation. This variability not only reflects the inherent complexity and subjective nature of medical image interpretation but also directly impacts the development and evaluation of automated segmentation algorithms. Accurately modeling and quantifying this variability is essential for enhancing the robustness and clinical applicability of these algorithms. We report the set-up and summarize the benchmark results of the Quantification of Uncertainties in Biomedical Image Quantification Challenge (QUBIQ), which was organized in conjunction with International Conferences on Medical Image computing and computer-Assisted Intervention (MICCAI) 2020 and 2021. The challenge focuses on the uncertainty quantification of medical image segmentation which considers the omnipresence of inter-rater variability in imaging datasets. The large collection of images with multi-rater annotations features various modalities such as MRI and CT;various organs such as the brain, prostate, kidney, and pancreas;and different image dimensions 2D-vs-3D. A total of 24 teams submitted different solutions to the problem, combining various baseline models, Bayesian neural networks, and ensemble model techniques. The obtained results indicate the importance of the ensemble models, as well as the need for further research to develop efficient 3D methods for uncertainty quantification methods in 3D segmentation tasks. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

Untrusted Hardware Causes Double-Fetch Problems in the I/O Memory

The double fetch problem occurs when the data is maliciously changed between two kernel reads of the supposedly same data, which can cause serious security problems in the kernel. Previous research focused on the double fetches between the kernel and user applications. In this paper, we present the first dedicated study of the double fetch problem between the kernel and peripheral devices （aka. the hardware double fetch）. Operating systems communicate with peripheral devices by reading from and writing to the device mapped I/O （input and output） memory. Owing to the lack of effective validation of the attached hardware, compromised hardware could flip the data between two reads of the same I/O memory address, causing a double fetch problem. We propose a static pattern-matching approach to identify the hardware double fetches from the Linux kernel. Our approach can analyze the entire kernel without relying on the corresponding hardware. The results are categorized and each category is analyzed using case studies to discuss the possibility of causing bugs. We also find four previously unknown double-fetch vulnerabilities, which have been confirmed and fixed after reporting them to the maintainers.

Generalised hermite functions and their applications in spectral approximations

In 1939, G. Szegö first introduced a family of generalised Hermite polynomials (GHPs) as a generalisation of usual Hermite polynomials, which are orthogonal with respect to the weight function |x|2µe´x2, µ ą ´ 12 on the whole line. Since then, there have been a few works on the study of their properties, but no any on their applications to numerical solutions of partial differential equations (PDEs). The main purposes of this paper are twofold. The first is to construct the generalised Hermite polynomials and generalised Hermite functions (GHFs) in arbitrary d dimensions, which are orthogonal with respect to |x|2µe´|x|2 and |x|2µ in Rd, respectively. We then define a family of adjoint generalised Hermite functions (A-GHFs) upon GHFs, which has two appealing properties: (i) the Fourier transform maps A-GHF to the corresponding GHF;and (ii) A-GHFs are orthogonal with respect to the inner product ru, vsHspRdq "pṕ∆q 2s u, ṕ∆q 2s vqRd associated with the integral fractional Laplacian. The second purpose is to explore their applications in spectral approximations of PDEs. As a remarkable consequence of the fractional Sobolev-type orthogonality, the spectral-Galerkin method using A-GHFs as basis functions leads to an identity stiffness matrix for the integral fractional Laplacian operator ṕ∆qs, which is known to be notoriously difficult and expensive to discretise. Indeed, the A-GHFs provide an optimal basis for Hermite approximation of ṕ∆qs in Rd. As a by-product, the A-GHFs with integer parameter s can significantly improve the existing Hermite spectral-Galerkin algorithms for PDEs with usual Laplacian. We also conduct rigorous error analysis of approximation by GHFs and of the optimal spectral method for fractional PDEs in Rd. The second application is to solve the eigenvalue problem of the Schrödinger operator involving a general fractional power potential. With the increasing popularity of virtual machine monitoring (VMM) technologies, performance variability among collocated virtual machines (VMs) can easily become a severe scalability issue. Particularly, it becomes a necessary for administrative team to control the performance degradation level in a shared environment when multiple I/O-intensive applications simultaneously request their I/O operations [1]. Nevertheless, adding several logical layers between the running applications and the physical storage system, as seen in contemporary virtualized storage devices, makes it considerably difficult to build a low overhead controlling mechanism for such systems (while each VM may running a separate operating system instance) [2]. In this paper, we propose a strategy based on control theory for managing the performance of several I/O requests, such as mean response times and read/write throughput in a consolidated environment where multiple virtual services can share access to a storage system. This scheme uses an approach for measuring the characterization of read/write performance attributes of each virtual services and also takes into account the run-time quality of service enforcement levels requested by them. This is formulated as an optimization problem where a reward function is defined to reduce the overall QoS violation incidents among all consolidated virtual services. Performance evaluation is carried out by comparing the proposed solution with the default embedded Linux controller across a range of emulated application workloads in scenarios with multiple consolidated virtual containers. The results confirm that the proposed solution can reduce the overall QoS violation incident rates in scenarios in which the platform operates at a significant traffic load comparing to the default policy in LXC engine.

A typical scenario in a stream data-flow processing engine is that users submit continues queries in order to receive the computational result once a new stream of data arrives. The focus of the paper is to design a dynamic CPU cap controller for stream data-flow applications with real-time constraints, in which the result of computations must be available within a short time period, specified by the user, once a recent update in the input data occurs. It is common that the stream data-flow processing engine is deployed over a cluster of dedicated or virtualized server nodes, e.g., Cloud or Edge platform, to achieve a faster data processing. However, the attributes of incoming stream data-flow might fluctuate in an irregular way. To effectively cope with such unpredictable conditions, the underlying resource manager needs to be equipped with a dynamic resource provisioning mechanism to ensure the real-time requirements of different applications. The proposed solution uses control theory principals to achieve a good utilization of computing resources and a reduced average response time. The proposed algorithm dynamically adjusts the required quality of service (QoS) in an environment when multiple stream & data-flow processing applications concurrently run with unknown and volatile workloads. Our study confirms that such a unpredictable demand can negatively degrade the system performance, mainly due to adverse interference in the utilization of shared resources. Unlike prior research studies which assumes a static or zero correlation among the performance variability among consolidated applications, we presume the prevalence of shared-resource interference among collocated applications as a key performance-limiting parameter and confront it in scenarios where several applications have different QoS requirements with unpredictable workload demands. This article's main contributions are twofold: 1) to demonstrate how to apply the general European Union's High-Level Expert Group's (EU HLEG) guidelines for trustworthy AI in practice for the domain of healthcare and 2) to investigate the research question of what does 'trustworthy AI' mean at the time of the COVID-19 pandemic. To this end, we present the results of a post-hoc self-assessment to evaluate the trustworthiness of an AI system for predicting a multiregional score conveying the degree of lung compromise in COVID-19 patients, developed and verified by an interdisciplinary team with members from academia, public hospitals, and industry in time of pandemic. The AI system aims to help radiologists to estimate and communicate the severity of damage in a patient's lung from Chest X-rays. It has been experimentally deployed in the radiology department of the ASST Spedali Civili clinic in Brescia, Italy, since December 2020 during pandemic time. The methodology we have applied for our post-hoc assessment, called Z-Inspection®, uses sociotechnical scenarios to identify ethical, technical, and domain-specific issues in the use of the AI system in the context of the pandemic. © 2020 IEEE.
