Event traces are helpful in understanding the performance behavior of parallel applications since they allow the in-depth analysis of communication and synchronization patterns. However, the absence of synchronized clocks on most cluster systems may render the analysis ineffective because inaccurate relative event timings may misrepresent the logical event order and lead to errors when quantifying the impact of certain behaviors or confuse the users of time-line visualization tools by showing messages flowing backward in time. In our earlier work, we have developed a scalable algorithm that eliminates inconsistent inter-process timings postmortem in traces of pure MPI applications. Since hybrid programming, the combination of MPI and OpenMP in a single application, is becoming more popular on clusters in response to rising numbers of cores per chip and widening shared-memory nodes, we present an extended version of the algorithm that in addition to message-passing event semantics also preserves and restores shared-memory event semantics.

Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOGs) gradually become one of the most popular internet applications. Traditional client-server architecture is widely used in MMOGs’ deployment, but its scalability and maintenance are limited mostly by servers. Peer-to-Peer (P2P) architecture, which attempts to make use of computer resources from the computers in the network, is considered to be a candidate infrastructure for MMOGs. In this paper, we investigate some related work and propose an algorithm to split overlay network for P2P-based MMOGs. We show the benefit of splitting the overlay network in reducing lookup latency of game objects through experiments and analytical analysis. © 2009 Gesellschaft fur Informatik (GI). A distributed Multi-Agent System (MAS) is often appropriate in solving large-scale experimental problems. RePast is a well-known simulation toolkit for agent-based modeling. In order to extend the scalability of RePast, one way is to partition the model into a distributed simulation. Interfacing RePast with the High Level Architecture (HLA) is a way to build the distributed system. This has previously been achieved in the HLA-RePast system by using a traditional interfacing approach which is time-consuming in the development process. In this paper, a new approach to interfacing RePast with the HLA is introduced. It is a pioneering attempt to adopt a generic architecture for Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) simulation package interoperability to interface an agent-based simulation package with the HLA. A middleware called DSManager originally designed to support COTS simulation package interoperability, is proven to be able to support interoperability of RePast models in a fast and easy manner. The advantages and tradeoffs, and the performance of the new distributed RePast system are discussed and compared to the HLA-RePast system.

Simulation is a low cost and safe alternative to solve complex problems in various areas. To promote reuse and interoperability of simulation applications and link geographically dispersed simulation components, distributed simulation was introduced. The High Level Architecture (HLA) is the IEEE standard for distributed simulation. The actual implementation of the HLA standard is provided by a Run Time Infrastructure (RTI). The HLA defines six service groups. Its Data Distribution Management (DDM) service group aims at optimizing communication efficiency between simulation components and there are various approaches for DDM implementation. We have previously developed a Service Oriented HLA RTI (SOHR) which enables distributed simulations to be conducted across administrated domains on the Grid. It maps the six HLA service groups into different management services and creates a plug-and-play paradigm for an HLA RTI implementation so that different approaches for a service group can be easily implemented into SOHR. To demonstrate the plug-and-play paradigm, this paper discusses the implementation of two DDM approaches, the grid-based approach and an extended efficient sort-based approach, in SOHR. Experiments have also been carried out to compare their performance in different scenarios.

The evolution of services market raises the need for automatic support for negotiating service use criteria. In order to reach an agreement, the negotiating parties need to develop a common understanding of the Quality of Service (QoS) terms which are part of the Service Level Agreement (SLA). The use of semantic annotations together with reasoning can increase the level of flexibility and automation in SLA management. A framework is presented for SLA negotiation allowing the two parties to use their own terminologies.

Nowadays, more researchers in the simulation field are interested in the use of a service-oriented architecture and component-based system in order to design more efficient large-scale distributed simulation systems. A Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) is a collection of independent services with well-defined interfaces that can be accessed without knowledge of their implementation. A component-based approach separates the whole system into different parts based on their functionalities. In this paper, a framework for component-based distributed simulation on the Grid (SOAr-DSGrid) is introduced. One of the major issues in designing the framework is to have efficient data FLow and control flow in the framework. Data flow describes the way that data moves in the system while control flow determines the order of activities that happen in the system. The rule engine is a critical part of the framework and is responsible for managing the distributed data flow and control FLow. The design and implementation of the rule engine is the major focus of this paper. The rule engine enables the framework to be more scalable as the components within the framework now communicate in a fully distributed manner.

The wireless sensor network (WSN) has recently attracted considerable attention due to the low price and ease to deploy it. In particular, in a hostile or harsh regions where sensors cannot be deployed manually, WSNs can be established just by dropping sensors from the air. In this case, however, most likely sensors are not placed at optimal positions, although the location of sensors does have a drastic impact on the WSN performance. Moreover, randomized deployment algorithm can leave holes in terms of coverage in the sensing area. This paper proposes a sensor relocation scheme where mobile sensors move to patch up the holes by appropriate coverage. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms prior existing schemes in terms of coverage and lifespan of WSNs.

Modeling and simulation permeate all areas of business, science and engineering. To promote the interoperability and reusability of simulation applications and link geographically dispersed simulation components, distributed simulation was introduced. While the high level architecture (HLA) is the IEEE standard for distributed simulation, a run time infrastructure (RTI) provides the actual implementation of the HLA. With increased size and complexity of simulation applications, large amounts of distributed computational and data resources are required. The Grid provides a flexible, secure and coordinated resource sharing environment which can facilitate distributed simulation execution. In this paper, we propose a service oriented HLA RTI (SOHR) framework which provides the functionalities of an RTI as Grid services and enables large scale distributed simulations to be conducted on a heterogeneous Grid environment. The various services in SOHR can be dynamically deployed, discovered and undeployed, leading to a scalable distributed simulation environment. While the communications between simulators are through Grid service invocations, the standard HLA interface is provided as a library to increase simulator reusability and interoperability. A subset of HLA specifications was implemented in a SOHR prototype based on GT4 and the experimental results have verified the feasibility of SOHR.
