Simulation is a low cost and safe alternative to solve complex problems in various areas. To promote reuse and interoperability of simulation applications and link geographically dispersed simulation components, distributed simulation was introduced. The High Level Architecture (HLA) is the IEEE standard for distributed simulation. The actual implementation of the HLA standard is provided by a Run Time Infrastructure (RTI). The HLA defines six service groups. Its Data Distribution Management (DDM) service group aims at optimizing communication efficiency between simulation components and there are various approaches for DDM implementation. We have previously developed a Service Oriented HLA RTI (SOHR) which enables distributed simulations to be conducted across administrated domains on the Grid. It maps the six HLA service groups into different management services and creates a plug-and-play paradigm for an HLA RTI implementation so that different approaches for a service group can be easily implemented into SOHR. To demonstrate the plug-and-play paradigm, this paper discusses the implementation of two DDM approaches, the grid-based approach and an extended efficient sort-based approach, in SOHR. Experiments have also been carried out to compare their performance in different scenarios.

Modeling and simulation permeate all areas of business, science and engineering. To promote the interoperability and reusability of simulation applications and link geographically dispersed simulation components, distributed simulation was introduced. While the high level architecture (HLA) is the IEEE standard for distributed simulation, a run time infrastructure (RTI) provides the actual implementation of the HLA. With increased size and complexity of simulation applications, large amounts of distributed computational and data resources are required. The Grid provides a flexible, secure and coordinated resource sharing environment which can facilitate distributed simulation execution. In this paper, we propose a service oriented HLA RTI (SOHR) framework which provides the functionalities of an RTI as Grid services and enables large scale distributed simulations to be conducted on a heterogeneous Grid environment. The various services in SOHR can be dynamically deployed, discovered and undeployed, leading to a scalable distributed simulation environment. While the communications between simulators are through Grid service invocations, the standard HLA interface is provided as a library to increase simulator reusability and interoperability. A subset of HLA specifications was implemented in a SOHR prototype based on GT4 and the experimental results have verified the feasibility of SOHR.

Simulation is a low cost alternative to experimentation on real-world physical systems. Grid technology enables coordinated use of and secure access to distributed computing resources and data sources. The service-oriented architecture (SOA) is an ideal paradigm for next generation computing. The loose coupling among services in the SOA relieves service consumers from detailed knowledge of implementation, implementation language, and execution platform of the services to be consumed. In this paper, we propose a framework for developing a component-based distributed simulation and executing the simulation in a service-oriented architecture on the Grid. This framework consists of the schemas for developing simulation components and simulation applications, and underlying base component service modules for constructing a simulation component as a service. The use of component interfaces and schemas enables collaborative development of simulation applications, and the deployment of simulation components as services takes advantage of the SOA (e.g., loose coupling, heterogeneity, and transport neutrality). This paper discusses the motivation for developing such a framework and describes the details of its development. © 2006 IEEE.

We have achieved a sustained performance of 55 TFLOPS for molecular dynamics simulations of the amyloid fibril formation of peptides from the yeast Sup35 in an aqueous solution. For performing the calculations, we used the MDGRAPE-3 system - -a special-purpose computer system for molecular dynamics simulations. Its nominal peak performance was 415 TFLOPS for Coulomb force calculations;this is the highest-ever performance reported for classical molecular dynamics simulations. Amyloid fibril formation is known to be related to the occurrence of severe diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Creutzfeldt-Jakob diseases. The Sup35 protein is a "yeast prion protein," which forms mini-crystals due to aggregation;it forms an effective platform for studying the formation process of amyloid fibrils. In these simulations, we first elucidate that the amyloid-forming peptides GNNQQNY aggregate at a higher frequency than non-amyloid-forming peptides SQNGNQQRG;further, the GNNQQNY peptides tend to form parallel two-stranded -sheets that would grow into a cross- amyloid nucleus. The results are consistent with those obtained experimentally. Furthermore, we could observe an early elongation of the amyloid nucleus. This result is expected to contribute toward a deeper understanding of the amyloid growth mechanism. © 2006 IEEE.

Creating human-like behaviors in a virtual warfare environment is still a challenging task to date. This paper presents our ongoing work on designing an AI framework for the bots in Military Operations on Urban Terrain (MOUT) simulations. Our framework is designed to be flexible, extensible, integrable and independent of simulation platforms. For fast prototyping, the AI framework is implemented on the Unreal Tournament (UT) game engine. A case study has been conducted which shows that the framework is effective and efficient in creating realistic bot behaviors in various combat scenarios.

In this paper, we present our Grid-based decision tree architecture, with the intention of applying it to both parallel and sequential algorithms. Also, we show that, based on the scope and model of data mining applied in the Grid environment as well as user equivalent perspective, Grid roles can be categorized into three types. It is our goal, through these definitions, to help software developers define clear system processes and differentiate the application scope for software applications. To, fulfill our architecture, we first apply an existing parallel decision tree algorithm (the SPRINT algorithm) to the Grid environment. The performance and differences in many other areas are compared using datasets of different sizes. The experimental results will be used for future reference and further development. © 2005 IEEE.

In this paper, a parallel loop self-scheduling scheme for heterogeneous PC cluster systems is proposed. Though the proposed scheme does allow users to choose parameters before the execution initialization phase, there are still weaknesses that motivate us to go further with new improvements in that scheme. For instance, a decision on a fixed and monotonous parameter can easily lead to invalid schedule by using previous input information. Thus, it is proposed in this paper a new scheme, where the scheduling parameter can be adjusted dynamically and fit into most widely available computer systems, in order to provide higher overall performance. © 2005 IEEE.
