In this paper, the authors presented the grid-based decision tree architecture, with the intention of applying it to both parallel and sequential algorithms. Also, it is shown that, based on the scope and model of data mining applied in the grid environment as well as user equivalent perspective, grid roles can be categorized into three types. It was aimed, through these definitions, to help software developers define clear system processes and differentiate the application scope for software applications. To fulfill the architecture, an existing parallel decision tree algorithm was first applied (the SPRINT algorithm) to the grid environment. The performance and differences in many other areas are compared using datasets of different sizes. The experimental results will be used for future reference and further development.

In this paper, we present BioGrid, a novel computing resource that combines advantages of grid computing technology with bioinformatics parallel applications. The grid environment permits the sharing of a large amount of idle computing resources and data. The investigation of bioinformatics demands orders of magnitude of computing resources and in parallel, the biological data are growing in such a high speed. By using BioGrid, we plan to integrate and share resources and biological data using the grid computing technology. Still in this paper, the well-known FASTA application is performed as matter of testing and analysis in our grid computing platform, as goal to show the improved efficiency and reduced computation time. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

In this paper, a novel supervised classification approach called Collateral Representative Subspace Projection Modeling (C-RSPM) is presented. C-RSPM facilitates schemes for collateral class modeling, class-ambiguity solving, and classification, resulting a multi-class supervised classifier with high detection rate and various operational benefits including low training and classification times and low processing power and memory requirements. In addition, C-RSPM is capable of adaptively selecting nonconsecutive principal dimensions from the statistical information of the training data set to achieve an accurate modeling of a representative subspace. Experimental results have shown that the proposed C-RSPM approach outperforms other supervised classification methods such as SIMCA, C4.5 decision tree, Decision Table (DT), Nearest Neighbor (NN), KNN, Support Vector Machine (SVM), 1-NN Best Warping Window DTW, 1-NN DTW with no Warping Window, and the well-known classifier boosting method AdaBoost with SVM. © 2006 IEEE.

We present a novel framework of a Web-based automated parallel CAD environment. The goal of this project is to make available to the CAD community a growing number of design and test applications that support standard interfaces and execute efficiently in a parallel environment. The design files of a user working on a remote machine are transparently shipped to the local Compute center, the relevant computation is performed in a parallel environment and then the results are returned back to the user. A job submission and scheduling tool ensures proper load balance and maximal usage of the various parallel machines. The whole process is done efficiently and transparently without the user having to bother about any low-level details. At present, a number of parallel CAD tools including a placement tool, a fault simulator and a VHDL simulator are supported. Results from a preliminary implementation are impressive and show the feasibility of the approach.

In this paper we present a design of a medium access control protocol that allows the utilization of unused licensed spectrum of deployed wireless cellular systems (Primary System) by an overlaid multi-hop ad hoc network (Secondary System). The basic design principle is that the secondary operates in a non-intrusive manner and does not interact with the primary. We address a number of architectural challenges pertinent to this networking environment, and evaluate the performance of the MAC. Our performance evaluation results show that, in a single-hop ad hoc network, the proposed MAC transparently utilizes 75% of the bandwidth left unused by the primary, while, in the multi-hop cases, due to spatial reuse, the bandwidth utilization can be significantly higher.

Overlap of computations and communications is an effective mechanism to improve the performance of parallel/distributed applications significantly. This overlap can be achieved efficiently by using data partitioning and properly scheduling the data transfer. Various asynchronous communication primitives, that are provided by most message passing tools (e.g. PVM, MPI), can be used to implement the required. Here, we present a design model, the distributed Software Design Model (DSDM) and show how it can be applied to optimize parallel/distributed applications. We show through several examples, the Master-Slave Merge Sorting Application and the astrophysical N-Body Problem, how the DSDM can be used to develop efficient and optimized implementations of parallel and distributed algorithms.

A set of directed permutation graphs called rotator graphs were proposed as an alternative to the star and pancake graphs for multiprocessor interconnection networks. The rotator graphs have a smaller diameter than star and pancake graphs for the same number of nodes, while sharing the properties of star, pancake, and binary hypercubes like maximal fault tolerance, partitionability, etc. In this paper we develop a class of algorithms for recognizing undirected mesh structures in n-rotator graphs. The average dilation of the embeddings are very low as compared to the dilation of the embedding. These embeddings will be very useful for regular computations with bi-directional requirements, in addition to the irregular computations in n-rotator graphs. Most of the results presented here equally apply to another set of directed Cayley graphs, the cycle prefix digraphs.< >

In this paper we investigate the time delay propagation rates in a Vehicular Ad-Hoc Network, where vehicular connectivity is supported by both Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) protocols. In our vision, seamless connectivity issues in a VANET with nearby network infrastructure, can be fixed by an opportunistic choice of a vehicular protocol between V2V and V2I. Such a decision is taken by each vehicle whenever it needs to transmit messages. Our technique - called as Vehicle-to-X - represents a handoff procedure between V2V and V2I, and vice versa, in order to keep vehicles connected independent of mobility issues and traffic scenarios. We investigate the time delay as a performance metric for protocol switching, and present the time propagation rates which occur when vehicles are transmitting warning messages, via V2V or V2I. Simulation results show how the simultaneous usage of pre-existing network infrastructure, together with inter-vehicular communications, provides low delays; while traditional opportunistic vehicular communications increases the transmission time delays and does not guarantee seamless connectivity to vehicles.

The Hybrid Technology Multi-Threading project is a long-term study of the feasibility of combining several emerging technologies to reach 1 petaFLOPS within ten years. HTMT will combine high-speed superconductor processors, semiconductor memories with built-in processors, high-speed optical interconnects, and high-density holographic storage. While there are major challenges in all aspects of this project, those in processor architecture are the focus of this paper. Fundamental differences between RSFQ circuits and conventional semiconductor circuits, including a radical jump in clock speed, make today's processor design approaches inappropriate for HTMT. Sequential instruction dispatching, even within the lowest programming unit (a strand), will lead to unacceptably high latencies, hence poor performance. We propose alternative processor designs which use fine-grain synchronizations between individual instructions in order to avoid these bottlenecks.

An efficient algorithm for managing a parallel heap

We design a cost-optimal algorithm for managing a parallel heap on an exclusive-read exclusive-write (EREW), parallel random access machine (PRAM) model. We also analyze the time and space complexities of our algorithm, which efficiently employs p processors in the range 1 ≤ p ≤ n, where n is the maximum number of items in the parallel heap. It is assumed that a delete-think-insert cycle is repeatedly performed, and each processor requires an arbitrary but the same amount of time (called the think time) for processing an item which in turn generates at most two new items. The use of a global data structure for each level of the heap helps reduce the working memory space required. The time complexity for deleting p items of the highest priority from the parallel heap is O(log p), while that for inserting at most 2p new items is O(log n). With or without incorporating the think time, the speedup of our algorithm is shown to be linear, i.e. O(p). Hence this algorithm is an improvement in time over the one proposed by Deo and Prasad [5, 6]. © 1994, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC. All rights reserved.
