High-entropy alloys (HEAs) have received attention because of their excellent mechanical and thermodynamic properties. A recent study revealed that Co-free face-centered cubic HEAs could improve strength and ductility, which is crucial for nuclear materials. Here we implemented first-principles calculations to explore the fundamental mechanism for enhancing the mechanical properties in Co-free Cr₂₅Fe₂₅Ni₂₅Mn₂₅ alloy. We found that the local lattice distortion of Co-free HEA was more significant than that of the well-known Cantor alloy. Furthermore, the short-range order formation in Co-free HEA caused the highly fluctuated stacking fault energy. Thus, the significant local lattice distortion and the non-uniform solid solution states comprising low- and high-stacking fault regions improve strength and ductility. © 2023 The Authors

Japan has introduced Clinical Trials Act in April 2018 with unique definition of "clinical trials". Once defined as a clinical trial, the research has to be conducted by ones with medical doctor license. As a result, the act discourages medical and biomedical engineering researchers, mostly engineering-origin researchers without medical doctor license, to engage in research activities. In order to promote medical and biomedical engineering researches, Japanese Society for Medical and Biomedical engineering issued guideline for researchers to check whether a particular research is classified as clinical trial under the clinical trial act definition on October 2019. Although the guideline provides general classification criteria, contributions of members to develop detailed criteria should be given for each research approach, such as electric-stimuli, motor-assistance, etc. is expected. © 2020, Japan Soc. of Med. Despite substantial declines since 2000, lower respiratory infections (LRIs), diarrhoeal diseases, and malaria remain among the leading causes of nonfatal and fatal disease burden for children under 5 years of age (under 5), primarily in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The spatial burden of each of these diseases has been estimated subnationally across SSA, yet no prior analyses have examined the pattern of their combined burden. Here we synthesise subnational estimates of the burden of LRIs, diarrhoea, and malaria in children under-5 from 2000 to 2017 for 43 sub-Saharan countries. Some units faced a relatively equal burden from each of the three diseases, while others had one or two dominant sources of unit-level burden, with no consistent pattern geographically across the entire subcontinent. Using a subnational counterfactual analysis, we show that nearly 300 million DALYs could have been averted since 2000 by raising all units to their national average. Our findings are directly relevant for decision-makers in determining which and targeting where the most appropriate interventions are for increasing child survival. © 2022, The Author(s).

Undoped layered oxynitrides have not been considered as promising H 2 ‐evolution photocatalysts because of the low chemical stability of oxynitrides in aqueous solution. Here, we demonstrate the synthesis of a new layered perovskite oxynitride, K 2 LaTa 2 O 6 N, as an exceptional example of a water‐tolerant photocatalyst for H 2 evolution under visible light. The material underwent in‐situ H + /K + exchange in aqueous solution while keeping its visible‐light‐absorption capability. Protonated K 2 LaTa 2 O 6 N, modified with an Ir cocatalyst, exhibited excellent catalytic activity toward H 2 evolution in the presence of I − as an electron donor and under visible light; the activity was six times higher than Pt/ZrO 2 /TaON, one of the best‐performing oxynitride photocatalysts for H 2 evolution. Overall water splitting was also achieved using the Ir‐loaded, protonated K 2 LaTa 2 O 6 N in combination with Cs‐modified Pt/WO 3 as an O 2 evolution photocatalyst in the presence of an I 3 − /I − shuttle redox couple.

Infections can lead to persistent symptoms and diseases such as shingles after varicella zoster or rheumatic fever after streptococcal infections. Similarly, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‑CoV‑2) infection can result in long coronavirus disease (COVID), typically manifesting as fatigue, pulmonary symptoms and cognitive dysfunction. The biological mechanisms behind long COVID remain unclear. We performed a genome-wide association study for long COVID including up to 6,450 long COVID cases and 1,093,995 population controls from 24 studies across 16 countries. We discovered an association of FOXP4 with long COVID, independent of its previously identified association with severe COVID-19. The signal was replicated in 9,500 long COVID cases and 798,835 population controls. Given the transcription factor FOXP4’s role in lung physiology and pathology, our findings highlight the importance of lung function in the pathophysiology of long COVID. © The Author(s) 2025.

Summary Background Across low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), one in ten deaths in children younger than 5 years is attributable to diarrhoea. The substantial between-country variation in both diarrhoea incidence and mortality is attributable to interventions that protect children, prevent infection, and treat disease. Identifying subnational regions with the highest burden and mapping associated risk factors can aid in reducing preventable childhood *** We used Bayesian model-based geostatistics and a geolocated dataset comprising 15 072 746 children younger than 5 years from 466 surveys in 94 LMICs, in combination with findings of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2017, to estimate posterior distributions of diarrhoea prevalence, incidence, and mortality from 2000 to 2017. From these data, we estimated the burden of diarrhoea at varying subnational levels (termed units) by spatially aggregating draws, and we investigated the drivers of subnational patterns by creating aggregated risk factor *** The greatest declines in diarrhoeal mortality were seen in south and southeast Asia and South America, where 54·0% (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 38·1-65·8), 17·4% (7·7-28·4), and 59·5% (34·2-86·9) of units, respectively, recorded decreases in deaths from diarrhoea greater than 10%. Although children in much of Africa remain at high risk of death due to diarrhoea, regions with the most deaths were outside Africa, with the highest mortality units located in Pakistan. Indonesia showed the greatest within-country geographical inequality; some regions had mortality rates nearly four times the average country rate. Reductions in mortality were correlated to improvements in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) or reductions in child growth failure (CGF). Background: In an era of shifting global agendas and expanded emphasis on non-communicable diseases and injuries along with communicable diseases, sound evidence on trends by cause at the national level is essential. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) provides a systematic scientific assessment of published, publicly available, and contributed data on incidence, prevalence, and mortality for a mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive list of diseases and injuries. Methods: GBD estimates incidence, prevalence, mortality, years of life lost (YLLs), years lived with disability (YLDs), and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) due to 369 diseases and injuries, for two sexes, and for 204 countries and territories. Input data were extracted from censuses, household surveys, civil registration and vital statistics, disease registries, health service use, air pollution monitors, satellite imaging, disease notifications, and other sources. Cause-specific death rates and cause fractions were calculated using the Cause of Death Ensemble model and spatiotemporal Gaussian process regression. Cause-specific deaths were adjusted to match the total all-cause deaths calculated as part of the GBD population, fertility, and mortality estimates. Deaths were multiplied by standard life expectancy at each age to calculate YLLs. A Bayesian meta-regression modelling tool, DisMod-MR 2.1, was used to ensure consistency between incidence, prevalence, remission, excess mortality, and cause-specific mortality for most causes. Prevalence estimates were multiplied by disability weights for mutually exclusive sequelae of diseases and injuries to calculate YLDs. We considered results in the context of the Socio-demographic Index (SDI), a composite indicator of income per capita, years of schooling, and fertility rate in females younger than 25 years.
