Rice is the staple food for more than half of the world's population, and at the same time rice paddies are a significant source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. However, most of the current studies on quantification and abatement of GHG emissions are at the field scale, which is difficult to generalize at the regional scale. Moreover, there are fewer studies on abatement measures for different hydrothermal conditions. Therefore, this study clarified the field and regional scale emission patterns in the middle Yangtze River (MYR) and explored emission reduction measures through field experiments and DeNitrification-DeComposition (DNDC) model simulations. The results showed that paddy fields were the source of three GHGs, with peaks of nitrous oxide (N2O) emission after fertilization, two peaks of methane (CH4) emission, and a decrease of CH4 emission during sunning. The intensity of GHG emissions was higher during the period of nodulation, and the daily emissions of CH4 were highest in the moderate rain. There are strong spatial clustering characteristics of the emissions, with extreme hotspots concentrated in the Jianghan Plain. The annual emissions of CH4 were higher in the dry years, and the annual emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and N2O were higher in the wet years. In flat and hot-dry years, 25% reduction of nitrogen fertilizer and no return of straw to the field should be used;in wet and cold years, 25% reduction of nitrogen fertilizer + return of all straw to the field should be used, when the intensity of greenhouse gas emissions is the lowest. Therefore, future GHG emission reduction efforts in rice fields in the MYR should focus on field management during the nodulation and spiking period, focusing on the Jianghan Plain, with a view to contributing to cleaner production of rice. © 2024, The Authors. Prokaryotes are ubiquitous in the biosphere, important for human health and drive diverse biological and environmental processes. Systematics of prokaryotes, whose origins can be traced to the discovery of microorganisms in the 17th century, has transitioned from a phenotype-based classification to a more comprehensive polyphasic taxonomy and eventually to the current genome-based taxonomic *** transition aligns with a foundational shift from studies focused on phenotypic traits that have limited comparative value to those using genome sequences. In this context, Bergey's Manual of Systematics of Archaea and Bacteria(BMSAB) and Bergey's International Society for Microbial Systematics(BISMiS) play a pivotal role in guiding prokaryotic systematics. This review focuses on the historical development of prokaryotic systematics with a focus on the roles of BMSAB and BISMiS. We also explore significant contributions and achievements by microbiologists, highlight the latest progress in the field and anticipate challenges and opportunities within prokaryotic systematics. Additionally, we outline five focal points of BISMiS that are aimed at addressing these challenges. In conclusion, our collaborative effort seeks to enhance ongoing advancements in prokaryotic systematics, ensuring its continued relevance and innovative characters in the contemporary landscape of genomics and bioinformatics.

The proton-proton(pp)fusion chain dominates the neutrino production in the *** uncertainty of the predicted pp neutrino flux is at the sub-percent level,whereas that of the best measurement is O(10%).In this study,for the first time,we measure solar pp neutrinos in the electron recoil energy range from 24 to 144 keV using the PandaX-4T commissioning data with 0.63 tonne×year *** pp neutrino flux is determined as(8.0±3.9(stat)±10.0(syst))×1010 s^(-1)cm^(-2),which is consistent with the Standard Solar Model and existing measurements,corresponding to an upper flux limit of 23.3×10^(10)s^(-1)cm^(-2)at 90%C.L..

Harmless Treatment of the Antibiotic Fermentation Residues and Used as the Electro-Fenton Catalyst for Ciprofloxacin Degradation

Antibiotic fermentation residues (AFR) severely threatened the ecological environment, which had been classified as "hazardous waste" in China. In this study, the AFR flocculated by polymeric ferric sulfate (PFS) had been harmlessly treated and recycled into Fenton catalysts by pyrolysis in argon. The antibiotic fermentation residue biochar (AFRB) had been characterized. Ciprofloxacin (CIP) degraded by the electro Fenton (EF) with AFBR have been investigated. The results show that PFS has been reduced to Fe 0 and FeS during the pyrolysis process. The AFRB with mesoporous structures revealed soft magnetic features, which was convenient for separation. CIP could be completely degraded within 10 min by the AFRB-EF process at the initial concentration of 20 mg/L. Increasing the working current and the catalyst dosage in a certain range could decrease the required treatment time. ·OH and O 2 ·- were the dominant ROSs which played critical roles for CIP degradation. The antibacterial groups of CIP have been destroyed by the AFRB-EF reaction and its toxicity is negligible. The ARFB showed a satisfied reusability performance, even it was recycled for five times. Thus, this study provide new insights for the harmless and resourceful treatment of the antibiotic fermentation residues. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In this work, it was found that peroxymonosulfate (PMS) could appreciably accelerate the transformation rates of dichloroacetonitrile (DCAN) and trichloracetonitrile (TCAN) in aqueous solutions, especially under alkaline pHs. The impact of reactive oxygen species scavengers (methyl alcohol for sulfate radical, tert-butyl alcohol for hydroxyl radical, and azide for singlet oxygen) and water matrices (chloride (Cl−), bicarbonate (HCO3−), and natural organic matter (NOM)) on DCAN and TCAN transformation by PMS is evaluated, revealing negligible effects. A nucleophilic hydrolysis pathway, as opposed to an oxidation process, was proposed for the transformation of DCAN and TCAN by PMS, supported by the hydrolyzable characteristics of these compounds and validated through density functional theory calculations. Kinetic analysis indicated that the transformation of DCAN and TCAN by PMS adhered to a second-order kinetic law, with higher reaction rates observed at elevated pH levels within the range of 7.0–10.0. Kinetic modeling incorporating the hydrolytic contributions of water, hydroxyl ion, and protonated and deprotonated PMS (i.e., HSO5− and SO52−) effectively fitted the experimental data. Species-specific second-order rate constants reveal that SO52− exhibited significantly higher reactivity towards DCAN ((1.69 ± 0.22) × 104 M−1h−1) and TCAN ((6.06 ± 0.18) × 104 M−1h−1) compared to HSO5− ((2.14 ± 0.12) × 102 M−1h−1) for DCAN;and (1.378 ± 0.11) × 103 M−1h−1 for TCAN). Comparative analysis of DCAN and TCAN transformation efficiencies by four different oxidants indicated that PMS rivaled chlorine but falls short of hydrogen peroxide, with peroxydisulfate displaying negligible reactivity. Overall, this study uncovers the nucleophilic hydrolysis characteristics of PMS, supplementing its recognized role as an oxidant precursor or mild oxidant, and underscores its significant implications for environmental remediation. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Limited knowledge exists regarding the occurrence, potential sources, and risks of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in surface and waste water from chemical contiguous zones. 136 CECs were detected in the 32 sampling sites along the Yangtze River, with concentrations ranging from 0.55 to 4.21×104 ng/L. Hydrocortisonacetate, cortisone, prednisone, enalapril and medroxyprogesterone were detected across all sampling sites. Hierarchical cluster analysis based on 47 core CECs yielded similar results compared to principal components analysis and identified two major clusters: wastewater sites and surface water sites. Distinct patterns of CECs were observed in wastewater from three industrial parks due to variations in industrial facilities and products within each park. Nineteen CECs were initially classified as presenting a high or medium risk to aquatic organisms;further quantitative probabilistic risk assessment revealed that caffeine, trenbolone and norethindrone pose a threat to the most vulnerable aquatic species while high-risk sites mainly occurred downstream of the chemical industrial park. The joint ecological risk of high-risk CECs was evaluated using potentially affected fractions, which ranged from 0.44% to 47.9% with concentration addition and 0.33% to 45.1% with response addition. This suggests the need for considering the joint ecological risk of the detected compounds in future studies. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The Asian elephant(Elephas maximus)-the largest living land animal in Asia-is categorized as an endangered species according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature(IUCN)Red List and is listed in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora(CITES)Appendix I[1].Over the past 100 years,the range of the Asian elephant has declined by as much as 90%[2].At present,the Asian elephant inhabits forest-dominated habitat in only 13 countries across South and Southeast Asia(Fig.S1 online),and the IUCN Species Survival Commission(SSC)Asian Elephant Specialist Group(AsESG)estimated the global wild population size of Asian elephants to number 45,671-49,028 individuals[3].Forest habitat loss,along with human-elephant conflict,poaching and the illegal trade in ivory and elephant body parts,is weakening global conservation efforts towards the recovery of wild Asian elephant populations at local,national and range-wide scales[3,4].

Designing high-performance heterostructure catalysts for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation is a promising research area. In this study, we employed a self-templating strategy using Prussian blue analogs (PBAs) precursors as source design to fabricate CoFe/C heterostructure catalysts. The slow-speed coordination renders the CoFe PBAs precursor with highly ordered crystal structure and less coordinated water, resulting in an idea carbon-encapsulated CoFe bimetallic catalyst (CoFe-S-T) with more high-valance metals and graphitized carbon layer in its heterostructure, which is proved of superior catalytic performance for tetracycline (TC) degradation through nonradical pathway in PMS-driven oxidation. The higher CoIII/CoII ratio and surface oxygen content make CoFe-S-T an excellent catalyst by boosting 1O2 generation, which is the predominant active species. Besides, CoFe-S-T has a high proportion of graphitized carbon layer, which significantly improves the direct electron transfer pathway. Thus, utilizing precursor design in self-templating strategy is an effective method to synthesize high-performance heterostructure for PMS-driven organic pollutant degradation. © 2022, The Authors. Drift Drives Foraminiferal Community Assembly on a Carbonate Platform

Community composition is determined by four processes: drift, selection, dispersal, and speciation. The crucial issue in understanding community assembly is disentangling the relative importance of those processes. However, this issue has not been adequately addressed in benthic foraminiferal communities. A comprehensive study of benthic foraminiferal community composition, co-occurrence network, and community assembly was conducted on the Xisha carbonate platform. The community composition was determined via the environmental DNA (eDNA) technique. Heavy metals (Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, V, and Zn), grain size, loss on ignition (LOI), organic carbon, and pH were chosen for environmental measurement. We evaluated the effects of environmental variables on the community composition and the co-occurrence network, revealing that the former was affected only by organic carbon, whereas the latter was affected by both organic carbon and pH. Null and neutral models demonstrated that foraminiferal community assembly was driven by ecological drift instead of selection. The β-NTI (a measure of the relative importance of deterministic and stochastic processes) had strong and positive correlations with community β-diversity (compositional differences between pairs of communities) and network β-diversity (structural differences between pairs of subnetworks). A conceptual model was offered to explain how heterogeneous selection and stochastic processes interact to affect the two β-diversities. This study is the first to quantitatively assess the effects of variation in the relative importance of deterministic and stochastic processes on community β-diversity and network β-diversity in foraminifera; it provides new insight into the mechanisms underlying β diversity.
