Ethics education and the drive to produce ethical professional engineers is an important focus of one body of research on engineering education. This research often defines the positive outcome of ethics education as students and professional engineers choosing not to engage in unethical behavior. This paper discusses a portion of a larger research project and details efforts to identify and validate a definition of ethical behavior that includes the decision to engage in a positive behavior, defined as a service to a larger community. Through a series of interviews and focus groups with engineering administrators, faculty, and students, the authors attempt to confirm the construct validity of service participation as ethical behavior. They also investigate the validity of the aspects of service participation to be included as a part of a national survey on engineering ethics education practices and outcomes. They then discuss the final steps that will be taken to test and further validate the development of the service participation portion of the survey.

research indicates that under-represented students of color, especially Latino/a and African American students, and women (hereafter collectively referred to as URS) do not enter in the engineering disciplines in numbers commensurate with their enrollments in other courses of study within the University. In addition, some of the URS who initially enroll in freshman-level engineering courses fail to persist in the discipline. The challenge, therefore, is to determine what changes in the climate and/or engineering curriculum might encourage greater numbers of URS to enroll and persist. The goal of this project is to establish an inventory of student retention data for URS in engineering at the University of Michigan to determine the likelihood of persistence based on an evaluation of student intentions upon enrollment, deliberateness of course choices and perceptions of the first year experience. The objective is to follow the trajectories of students based upon their initial choices and intentions and to seek patterns of difference in female and under-represented minority students. This work-in-progress presents a summary of the initial findings of this investigation

We present a novel automated laryngoscope system that leverages the computational capabilities of the NVIDIA Jetson Nano for automating throat scanning and accurately localizing vocal cords through imaging which enhances the success rates of endotracheal intubation. We introduced an artificial intelligence (AI) model effectively trained using a deep learning mechanism on the Jetson Nano platform. This model detects the vocal cords in real-time and guides the insertion of the laryngoscope and endotracheal tube. The development of conventional video laryngoscope was prompted by the significant failure rates associated with manual intubation. Through the automation of vocal cord localization and imaging, the system mitigates intubation risks, thereby enabling prompt and safer medical interventions. The in vitro experiment results conducted on Resusci Anne proved the potential application of technologies such as the Jetson Nano by enhancing the success rates of intubation procedures. By autonomously indicating the path to navigate the endotracheal tube toward the vocal cords, the system provides a progressive solution for the advancement of laryngoscopy techniques.

This Work In Progress describes a NSF funded project to revise/simplify our research instruments used to measure ethical development of engineering undergraduates and make them useful for practical applications. Results of this project will provide a way for institutions, programs, and faculty to assess the impact of ethics initiatives at the, course, co-curricular, or single intervention level. As such, it has the potential to transform the way in which undergraduate engineering education is delivered by allowing individual institutions, programs, and faculty to assess and improve on their own ethics initiatives. In this paper we describe the method for reducing the full instrument to a more practical tool and initial steps at pilot testing.

Nationally only 40% of the incoming freshmen STEM majors are successful in earning a STEM degree [1]. The University of Central Florida (UCF) EXCEL program is an NSF funded STEP (Science, Technology, engineering and Mathematics Talent Expansion Program) whose goal is to increase the number of UCF STEM graduates. One of the activities that EXCEL has identified as essential in retaining students in science and engineering disciplines is the development and teaching of special courses at the freshman level, called Applications of Calculus I and Applications of Calculus II, or Apps I and Apps II, respectively. In Apps I and II, science and engineering professors are asked to lecture twice, as guest lectures, and to demonstrate to students where calculus topics appear in upper level science and engineering classes as well as where faculty use calculus in their research programs. This paper outlines the process used in producing the educational materials for Apps I and II courses (textbook, presentations slides, in-class homework assignments, demos) and it also discusses the assessment results pertaining to this specific EXCEL activity. © American Society for engineering Education, 2010.

Project based learning (PBL) is gaining increasing traction among educational development, scholars and practitioners. The dominant argument suggests that by engaging in real world projects and research, students can acquire valuable critical thinking, team work, problem-solving, and improved communication skills. The aim of this work-in-progress paper is to investigate the effects of PBL on student performance in a requirements engineering (RE) course. Students were divided into 5 project groups; each group carried out a RE project that addresses a real-world problem. The project deliverable for each group is a complete software requirements specification (SRS) document; a user interface design; and software development project management plan. Following the completion of the project, structured feedback was elicited from the students via questionnaires. The results were combined with the final student grades to evaluate the effect of PBL on their combined performance. Preliminary results show that PBL can benefit RE courses, especially by enhancing students performance. Yet, certain challenges, e.g., stakeholders engagement and team cohesion, must be addressed before these benefits can be fully realized.

Abstract: In this comprehensive investigation, we evaluate the efficacy of the Fenton process in degrading basic fuchsin (BF), a resistant dye. Our primary focus is on the utilization of readily available, environmentally benign, and cost-effective reagents for the degradation process. Furthermore, we delve into various operational parameters, including the quantity of sodium percarbonate (SPC), pH levels, and the dimensions of waste iron bars, to optimize the treatment efficiency. In the course of our research, we employed an initial SPC concentration of 0.5 mM, a pH level of 3, a waste iron bar measuring 3.5 cm in length and 0.4 cm in diameter, and a processing time of 10 min. Our findings reveal the successful elimination of the BF dye, even when subjected to treatment with diverse salts and surfactants under elevated temperatures and acidic conditions (pH below 3). This underscores the robustness of the Fenton process in purifying wastewater contaminated with dye compounds. The outcomes of our study not only demonstrate the efficiency of the Fenton process but highlight its adaptability to address dye contamination challenges across various industries. Critically, this research pioneers the application of waste iron bars as a source of iron in the Fenton reaction, introducing a novel, sustainable approach that enhances the environmental and economic viability of the process. This innovative use of recycled materials as catalysts represents a significant advancement in sustainable chemical engineering practices. This study investigates interdisciplinary interactions that take place during the research, development, and early conceptual design phases in the engineering of large-scale complex engineered systems (LaCES) such as aerospace vehicles. These interactions that occur throughout a large engineering development organization, become the initial conditions of the systems engineering process ultimately leading to the development of a viable system. This paper summarizes some of the challenges and opportunities regarding social and organizational issues that emerged from a qualitative study using ethnographic and survey data. The analysis reveals several socio-technical couplings between the engineered system and the organization that creates it. Survey respondents noted the importance of interdisciplinary interactions and their benefits to the engineered system as well as substantial challenges in interdisciplinary interactions. Noted benefits included enhanced knowledge and problem mitigation and noted obstacles centered on organizational and human dynamics. Findings suggest that addressing the social challenges may be a critical need in enabling interdisciplinary interactions during the development of LaCES.
