The Georgia Tech Regional engineering Program (GTREP) was originally created to provide the opportunity for students in southeastern Georgia to earn a Georgia Tech undergraduate engineering degree without leaving the region. Students complete two years of general education and engineering prerequisites at their home institutions before beginning the Georgia Tech curriculum as juniors. Georgia Tech courses are taught both by local faculty in southeast Georgia and remotely by faculty on the main campus. This system is further complicated by the fact that courses are delivered to three partner institutions as well as the GTREP facilities. The GTREP program is an ideal testbed for novel distributed education methods. We present some results for the combined approach we have developed, and outline plans for future scaling as the GTREP program expands.

The paper presents a new memory-efficient distributed arithmetic (DA) architecture for high-order FIR filters. The proposed architecture is based on a memory reduction technique for DA look-up-tables (LUTs); it requires fewer transistors for high-order filters than original LUT-based DA, DA-offset binary coding (DA-OBC), and the LUT-less DA-OBC. Recursive iteration of the memory reduction technique significantly increases the maximum number of filter order implementable on an FPGA platform by not only saving transistor counts, but also balancing hardware usage between logic element (LE) and memory. FPGA implementation results confirm that the proposed DA architecture can implement a 1024-tap FIR filter with significantly smaller area usage (<50%) than the original LUT-based DA and the LUT-less DA-OBC.

The paper presents two new imaging algorithms for detecting the positions of subsurface targets, e.g., land mines, using seismic waves. They are based on the CLEAN algorithm and its high resolution version RELAX. The paper shows how the CLEAN and RELAX algorithms can be modified to work in a multi-static active array setup for detecting passive targets. Seismic surface waves reflected from various targets are collected at a receiving array and processed to locate the reflectors. The modified imaging algorithms are demonstrated to work for experimental seismic data that include mines and rocks (clutter).

The work presented in this paper focuses on the use of hidden Markov models for face recognition. A new method based on the extraction of 2D-DCT feature vectors is described, and the recognition results are compared with other face recognition approaches. The method introduced reduces significantly the computational complexity of previous HMM-based face recognition system, while preserving the same recognition rate.

This paper presents a theoretical analysis of the structure of wide angle, ultra-wideband SAR images formed by a constant integration angle backprojection image former. It is shown that the effects of the image former can be modeled as a filtering operation on the original data. Furthermore, SAR images for different squint angles can be obtained from the original images by directional filtering. As a result, it is shown that perfect reconstructing directional filterbanks can be used as a unitary transform between SAR images and a 3-D representation containing additional aspect-angle information. It is demonstrated, how this new representation can be used to enhance targets.

The amount of digitized music stored on personal computers and available on the Internet is growing at a rapid rate. To address the access problem that this creates, we explore adapting HMM-based wordspotting techniques from speech recognition to create a system for melody-based retrieval of songs from a database of digitized music stored in a musically-unstructured format. In this paper, we present the construction of this melody spotter and evaluate its performance when trained under different feature vectors including a musical scale-based subset of the FFT and two Mel-scale based features. The results show the success of this system under the scale-based features when presented with both perfect melody queries and queries perturbed by minor errors.

This paper presents a coordinated multiple-substream unequal error protection and error concealment algorithm for SPIHT-coded bitstreams transmitted over lossy channels. In the proposed scheme, we divide the video sequence corresponding to a group of pictures into two sub-sequences in the temporal domain and independently encode each sub-sequence with a 3-D SPIHT algorithm to generate two independent substreams. Each substream is protected by an FEC-based unequal error protection algorithm that assigns unequal forward error correction codes for each substream with bit-plane granularity. The information that is lost during transmission for one substream is estimated at the receiver by using the correlation between the two substreams and the smoothness of the video signal. Simulation results show that the proposed multiple-substream UEP algorithm is simple, fast, and robust in hostile network conditions, and that the proposed error concealment algorithm achieves about 1-3 dB PSNR gain over the case where there is no error concealment at high packet loss rates.

Adaptive detection has a rich history in the radar community, and a number of other areas have borrowed heavily from constructs developed in this field. The task of target detection in hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is one such area that has recently begun to take advantage of parallels from the field of radar array processing. While there are key differences between the physical setup and data collected by radar and hyperspectral systems, the formulation of the adaptive detection problem is remarkably similar. In this paper we apply a two-stage detection approach originally developed for STAP in airborne radar to adaptive target detection in hyperspectral imaging. Touching first on the component algorithms involved, and then on their similarities and differences, we show that this two-stage approach has an interesting conceptual interpretation for HSI that comes from the multi-dimensional Euclidean geometry of the spectral measurement space. However, due to the nature of hyper-spectral target signatures and background statistics, we propose that there are many scenarios where HSI detection may be better served by reversing the order of stages applied to the data as laid out in previous formulations. Detection results for ground targets are presented to illustrate the potential of this new two-stage approach in hyperspectral adaptive detection

Adaptive filtering constitutes an important class of DSP algorithms employed in several hand held mobile devices for applications such as echo cancellation, signal de-noising, and channel equalization. In this paper, a new hardware architecture using conjugate distributed arithmetic (CDA) which is suitable for high throughput hardware implementations of LMS adaptive filters is presented. Unlike a traditional distributed arithmetic (DA) implementation where all possible combination sums of the filter coefficients are stored in a look-up-table (LUT), in the CDA architecture, all possible combination sums of the input signal samples are stored in the LUT and updated at the arrival of every sample using an efficient update procedure. We describe the design of CDA adaptive filters and show that practical implementations of CDA adaptive filters have very high throughput relative to multiply and accumulate architectures. We also show that CDA adaptive filters have a potential area and power consumption advantage over DSP microprocessor architectures for a given throughput.

This paper examines the problem of modelling and resynthesis of voiced song with the goal of improving the subjective performance quality. A set of methods is introduced based on the sinusoidal model for speech which enables precise modification of spectral characteristics as well as vibrato structure while maintaining the original speech quality and naturalness of the voice. Spectral characteristics are modified by modelling the formant structure with a set of asymmetric generalized Gaussians. Subjective tests were conducted which show that the proposed methods are effective in providing high quality modifications to vocal characteristics.
