Hackathons have become popular collaborative events for accelerating the development of creative ideas and prototypes. There are several case studies showcasing creative outcomes across domains such as industry, education, and research. However, there are no large-scale studies on creativity in hackathons which can advance theory on how hackathon formats lead to creative outcomes. We conducted a computational analysis of 193,353 hackathon projects. By operationalizing creativity through usefulness and novelty, we refined our dataset to 10,363 projects, allowing us to analyze how participant characteristics, collaboration patterns, and hackathon setups influence the development of creative projects. The contribution of our paper is twofold: We identified means for organizers to foster creativity in hackathons. We also explore the use of large language models (LLMs) to augment the evaluation of creative outcomes and discuss challenges and opportunities of doing this, which has implications for creativity research at large. © 2025, CC BY.

An evolutionary multi-objective approach for modelling network security

Security is the most important issue in a network system. Administrators can more easily understand threats to the network by using a model. In this paper, we present an approach for modelling a network that considers the benefits of the network as well as its limitations. In our approach, we model the system as an optimization problem, which is solved using three algorithms. As the proposed approach is stochastic, it works very efficiently in a network environment. This paper, presents a mathematical model of the system. Model provides easy comprehend of system. Presented model is based on multi-objective optimization problem. One parameter in the presented model is security and another parameter is user productivity. Security is the most important issue in a network system. Administrators can more easily understand threats to the network by using a model. In this paper, we present an approach for modelling a network that considers the benefits of the network as well as its limitations.

SmartEdge: Smart Healthcare End-to-End Integrated Edge and Cloud Computing System for Diabetes Prediction Enabled by Ensemble Machine Learning

The Internet of Things (IoT) revolutionizes smart city domains such as healthcare, transportation, industry, and education. The Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) is gaining prominence, particularly in smart hospitals and Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM). The vast volume of data generated by IoMT devices should be analyzed in real-time for health surveillance, prognosis, and prediction of diseases. Current approaches relying on Cloud computing to provide the necessary computing and storage capabilities do not scale for these latency-sensitive applications. Edge computing emerges as a solution by bringing cloud services closer to IoMT devices. This paper introduces SmartEdge, an AI-powered smart healthcare end-to-end integrated edge and cloud computing system for diabetes prediction. This work addresses latency concerns and demonstrates the efficacy of edge resources in healthcare applications within an end-to-end system. The system leverages various risk factors for diabetes prediction. We propose an Edge and Cloud-enabled framework to deploy the proposed diabetes prediction models on various configurations using edge nodes and main cloud servers. Performance metrics are evaluated using, latency, accuracy, and response time. In an era where data is abundant yet underutilized, organizations across various sectors face challenges in extracting actionable insights from complex, multi-modal datasets. To address these challenges, this study proposes a versatile data analytics framework designed to enhance predictive accuracy and support informed decision-making. The framework integrates structured and unstructured data, leveraging advanced Transformer architectures to capture temporal dynamics and complex interactions within the data. In a healthcare use case, the framework demonstrated its effectiveness by achieving an Accuracy of 0.854, an F1-Score of 0.895, and an AUC-ROC of 0.930, significantly outperforming traditional models. By incorporating SHAP for interpretability, the framework ensures that its predictions are both accurate and transparent, making it a valuable tool for decision-makers. While healthcare is one application, the framework's flexibility allows it to be adapted to a wide range of industries. Future work will focus on validating the framework across different sectors and integrating it into operational workflows to optimize decision-making and outcomes.

The rapid evolution of digital financial services has significantly increased the vulnerability of financial systems to fraudulent activities. Traditional machine learning models have offered substantial progress in detecting fraudulent transactions; however, they often lack adaptability and transparency, critical for dynamic financial environments and regulatory compliance. This paper introduces a novel approach that integrates Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) with Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) to enhance fraud detection capabilities in cloud-based financial platforms. Our model, tested on the synthetic PaySim mobile money transaction dataset, leverages the adaptive nature of DRL to continuously learn and update its fraud detection strategies based on evolving transaction patterns. Concurrently, the integration of XAI provides clear, interpretable insights into the decision-making process, thus ensuring transparency and building trust. The proposed model demonstrates superior performance with an achieved accuracy of 99.5% and an Fl-score of 99.0%, significantly outperforming traditional fraud detection systems. These results not only underscore the efficacy of our model in improving the accuracy of fraud detection but also highlight its capability in offering significant improvements in understanding the underlying reasons for each decision, thereby aiding compliance with financial regulations. The practical implications of this research highlight its potential to provide a robust, scalable, and transparent solution for realtime fraud detection, which is essential for safeguarding the integrity of modern financial systems.

The literature on generative “Artificial Intelligence” (AI) in education primarily focuses on its immediate benefits and applications, such as personalized learning, student engagement, and content generation. However, there is a notable absence of empirical research concerning the holistic use of generative AI within educational institutions and its long-term impact on educational sustainability. This study investigates the factors that predict the use of generative AI and its subsequent influence on educational sustainability. This study enhanced the extended “Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology” (UTAUT-2) by including personal innovativeness as an external variable and educational sustainability as an outcome. A hybrid methodology, integrating “Structural Equation Modeling” (SEM) and “Artificial Neural Network” (ANN), was used to evaluate the research model using data collected from 1,011 university students. The SEM analysis confirmed all hypotheses. Specifically, a positive relationship was found between use behavior and educational sustainability. These results show that the combined variables collectively account for 63% and 66% of the variance in use behavior and educational sustainability, respectively. The sensitivity analysis identified habit as the most important predictor of use behavior. The findings offer both theoretically important and practically valuable implications for designing user-centered AI integration in education.

Multi-modality image fusion (MMIF) entails synthesizing images with detailed textures and prominent objects. Existing methods tend to use general feature extraction to handle different fusion tasks. However, these methods have difficulty breaking fusion barriers across various modalities owing to the lack of targeted learning routes. In this work, we propose a multi-scenario feature joint learning architecture, MLFuse, that employs the commonalities of multi-modality images to deconstruct the fusion progress. Specifically, we construct a cross-modal knowledge reinforcing network that adopts a multipath calibration strategy to promote information communication between different images. In addition, two professional networks are developed to maintain the salient and textural information of fusion results. The spatial-spectral domain optimizing network can learn the vital relationship of the source image context with the help of spatial attention and spectral attention. The edge-guided learning network utilizes the convolution operations of various receptive fields to capture image texture information. The desired fusion results are obtained by aggregating the outputs from the three networks. Extensive experiments demonstrate the superiority of MLFuse for infrared-visible image fusion and medical image fusion. The excellent results of downstream tasks (i.e., object detection and semantic segmentation) further verify the high-quality fusion performance of our method. In mobile edge computing (MEC), task offloading can significantly reduce task execution latency and energy consumption of end user (EU). However, edge server (ES) resources are limited, necessitating efficient allocation to ensure the sustainable and healthy development for MEC system. In this paper, we propose a dynamic pricing mechanism based near-optimal resource allocation for elastic edge offloading. First, we construct a resource pricing model and accordingly develop the utility functions for both EU and ES, the optimal pricing model parameters are derived by optimizing the utility functions. In the meantime, our theoretical analysis reveals that the EU's utility function reaches a local maximum within the search range, but exhibits barely growth with increased resource allocation beyond this point. To this end, we further propose the Dynamic Inertia and Speed-Constrained particle swarm optimization (DISC-PSO) algorithm, which efficiently identifies the near-optimal resource allocation. Comprehensive simulation results validate the effectiveness of DISC-PSO algorithm, demonstrating that it significantly outperforms existing schemes by reducing the average number of iterations to reach a near-optimal solution by 86.88%, increasing the EU utility function value by 0.13%, and decreasing the variance of results by 96.78%. © 2025 IEEE. Federated learning (FL) emerges as a potential solution for enabling multiple terminal devices to collaboratively accomplish computational tasks within an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) swarm. However, traditional FL approaches, predicated on synchronous data aggregation, are not feasible for a UAV swarm owing to the inherently variable and dynamic nature of their communication networks compared with terrestrial systems. Furthermore, the data procured by UAVs is often highly heterogeneous, attributable to disparities in deployment environments and device attributes. Considering the distinct flight paths and unique operational conditions encountered by different UAVs, a considerable amount of data remains unlabeled. To tackle the challenges associated with asynchronous operations and the prevalence of unlabeled data, we introduce a novel framework termed Semi-synchronous FL with Cross-Sharpness and Layer-Freezing (SFedXL), tailored for a UAV swarm. In particular, we devise a cross-sharpness model training strategy aimed at optimizing the utilization of both labeled and unlabeled datasets. Additionally, we propose an innovative semi-synchronous model aggregation protocol, complemented by client-specific layer-freezing and client cluster scheduling, designed to expedite the training process. Our simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm surpasses current FL methods in terms of object recognition accuracy and communication efficiency, albeit with a trade-off of increased local computation latency. © 2014 IEEE.
