Rural areas in developing countries are plagued with complex, intricate challenges. In India, rural communities are seriously lagging regarding Sanitation and Waste management facilities. The majority of communities lack the resources to address those issues. Government programs have partly been able to address those issues, but much still needs to be done to solve the challenges completely. This study aimed to understand better the challenges associated with Solid Waste Management in rural India. It specifically explores how technology can help to complete the last mile of sustainability through a user-centered and participatory problem-solving approach. Taking the case of a community in Raichur district, Karnataka, a smart pipe composting design is proposed to address the Solid Waste Management challenges in the community. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

To obtain diverse scenarios for collaboratively training a more generalized object detector, the multi-source domain adaptive object detection has been proposed. However, such scenario faces challenges related to data privacy, domain discrepancy and category inconsistency, thus we propose a framework called FedCoin: Federated Contrastive domain-adaptation for category-inconsistent object detection. On the client sides, a novel dynamic model contrastive strategy is proposed to reduce excessively domain-specific features from local models. On the server side, we design a two-stage teacher-student architecture to tackle the challenge of backbone aggregation and inconsistent categories integration. Our method outperforms SOTA methods across different domain adaptation tasks, with an average precision increase of 6% on various datasets, demonstrating its superiority over existing methods for category-inconsistent and privacy-preserving scenarios. A fault in large online service systems often triggers numerous alerts due to the complex business and component dependencies among services, which is known as “alert storm”. In a short time, an online service system may generate a huge amount of alert data. This poses a challenge for on-call engineers to identify alerts that are associated with a system failure for root cause analysis. In this paper, we propose DyAlert, a dynamic graph neural networks-based approach for linking alerts that might be triggered by a same fault to reduce the burden of on-call engineers in the fault analysis. Our insight is that alerts are often triggered by alert propagation when a system failure occurs, e.g., alert $a$ would lead to the occurrence of alert $b$ . Whether two alerts should be linked depends on if one alert is triggered by the propagation of the other. Leveraging this insight, we design a dynamic graph (namely Alert-Metric Dynamic Graph) that describes the propagation process of alerts. Based on the dynamic graph, we train a neural networks-based model to predict alert links. We evaluate DyAlert with real-world data collected from an online service system running 85 business units and about 30,000 different services in a large enterprise. The results show that DyAlert is effective in predicting alert links and it outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches with an average increase of 0.259 in F1-score.

Unlocking Textual and visual Wisdom: Open-Vocabulary 3D Object Detection Enhanced by Comprehensive Guidance from Text and Image

Open-vocabulary 3D object detection (OV-3DDet) aims to localize and recognize both seen and previously unseen object categories within any new 3D scene. While language and vision foundation models have achieved success in handling various open-vocabulary tasks with abundant training data, OV-3DDet faces a significant challenge due to the limited availability of training data. Although some pioneering efforts have integrated vision-language models (VLM) knowledge into OV-3DDet learning, the full potential of these foundational models has yet to be fully exploited. In this paper, we unlock the textual and visual wisdom to tackle the open-vocabulary 3D detection task by leveraging the language and vision foundation models. We leverage a vision foundation model to provide image-wise guidance for discovering novel classes in 3D scenes. Specifically, we utilize a object detection vision foundation model to enable the zero-shot discovery of objects in images, which serves as the initial seeds and filtering guidance to identify novel 3D objects. Additionally, to align the 3D space with the powerful vision-language space, we introduce a hierarchical alignment approach, where the 3D feature space is aligned with the vision-language feature space using a pre-trained VLM at the instance, category, and scene levels. Through extensive experimentation, we demonstrate significant improvements in accuracy and generalization, highlighting the potential of foundation models in advancing open-vocabulary 3D object detection in real-world scenarios. © 2024, CC BY.

The ground-state conformation of a molecule is often decisive for its properties. However, experimental or computational methods, such as density functional theory (DFT), are time-consuming and labor-intensive for obtaining this conformation. Deep learning (DL) based molecular representation learning (MRL) has made significant advancements in molecular modeling and has achieved remarkable results in various tasks. Consequently, it has emerged as a promising approach for directly predicting the ground-state conformation of molecules. In this regard, we introduce GTMGC, a novel network based on Graph-Transformer (GT) that seamlessly predicts the spatial configuration of molecules in a 3D space from their 2D topological architecture in an end-to-end manner. Moreover, we propose a novel self-attention mechanism called Molecule Structural Residual Self-Attention (MSRSA) for molecular structure modeling. This mechanism not only guarantees high model performance and easy implementation but also lends itself well to other molecular modeling tasks. Our method has been evaluated on the Molecule3D benchmark dataset and the QM9 dataset. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach achieves remarkable performance and outperforms current state-of-the-art methods as well as the widely used open-source software RDkit. © 2024 12th International Conference on Learning Representations, ICLR 2024. In the current landscape of deep learning research, there is a predominant emphasis on achieving high predictive accuracy in supervised tasks involving large image and language datasets. However, a broader perspective reveals a multitude of overlooked metrics, tasks, and data types, such as uncertainty, active and continual learning, and scientific data, that demand attention. Bayesian deep learning (BDL) constitutes a promising avenue, offering advantages across these diverse settings. This paper posits that BDL can elevate the capabilities of deep learning. It revisits the strengths of BDL, acknowledges existing challenges, and highlights some exciting research avenues aimed at addressing these obstacles. Looking ahead, the discussion focuses on possible ways to combine large-scale foundation models with BDL to unlock their full potential. Copyright 2024 by the author(s)

The smart city comprises various interlinked elements which communicate data and offers urban life to *** Aerial Vehicles(UAV)or drones were commonly employed in different application areas like agriculture,logistics,and *** improving the drone flying safety and quality of services,a significant solution is for designing the Internet of Drones(IoD)where the drones are utilized to gather data and people communicate to the drones of a specific flying region using the mobile devices is for constructing the Internet-of-Drones,where the drones were utilized for collecting the data,and communicate with *** addition,the SIRSS-CIoD technique derives a tuna swarm algorithm-based clustering(TSA-C)technique to choose cluster heads(CHs)and organize clusters in IoV ***,the SIRSS-CIoD technique involves the design of a biogeography-based optimization(BBO)technique to an optimum route selection(RS)*** design of clustering and routing techniques for IoD networks in smart cities shows the novelty of the study.A wide range of experimental analyses is carried out and the comparative study highlighted the improved performance of the SIRSS-CIoD technique over the other approaches.

In order to make the best use of the diverse hardware architectures in present and future high-performance computers, developers and maintainers of scientific simulation codes strive for performance portability. The goal is to reach a good fraction of the hardware-specific practically achievable performance while maintaining a largely unified codebase. In benchmarks and first production codes, SYCL has been demonstrated to be a promising programming model for this purpose when targeting different CPU and *** this work, we utilize SYCL to develop a performance portable implementation of the 2D shallow water equations, discretized on unstructured triangular meshes using the discontinuous Galerkin method with polynomial orders zero, one, and two. In addition to GPUs from three and CPUs from two vendors, we also broaden the scope of target architectures by including Intel Stratix FPGAs with a fundamentally different execution model. We show that with a few targeted and encapsulated specializations, it is possible to adapt the execution flow to the respective targets. The performance analysis shows how FPGAs complement the other two architectures with particularly good performance for small problem sizes.
