Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) plays a pivotal role in autonomous driving and robotics. Existing methods often rely on hand-craft feature extraction and cross-modal fusion techniques, resulting in limited feature representation capability and reduced robustness. To address this challenge, we introduce DeepPointMap2, a novel learning-based LiDAR-visual SLAM architecture that leverages neural descriptors to tackle multiple SLAM sub-tasks in a unified manner. Our approach employs neural networks to extract multi-modal tokens, which are then adaptively fused by the visual-Point Fusion Module to generate sparse 3D neural descriptors, ensuring precise and robust performance. As a pioneering work, our method achieves state-of-the-art localization performance among various visual-, LiDAR-, and visual-LiDAR-based methods in widely-used benchmarks, as shown in the experiment results. Furthermore, the approach proves to be robust in scenarios involving camera failure and LiDAR obstruction. © 2024 ACM.

The growing necessity for enhanced processing capabilities in edge devices with limited resources has led us to develop effective methods for improving high-performance computing (HPC) applications. In this paper, we introduce LASP (Lightweight Autotuning of Scientific Application Parameters), a novel strategy designed to address the parameter search space challenge in edge devices. Our strategy employs a multi-armed bandit (MAB) technique focused on online exploration and exploitation. Notably, LASP takes a dynamic approach, adapting seamlessly to changing environments. We tested LASP with four HPC applications: Lulesh, Kripke, Clomp, and Hypre. Its lightweight nature makes it particularly well-suited for resource-constrained edge devices. By employing the MAB framework to efficiently navigate the search space, we achieved significant performance improvements while adhering to the stringent computational limits of edge devices. Our experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of LASP in optimizing parameter search on edge devices. © 2024 IEEE.

Distributed systems and blockchain consensus protocols rely on a clock synchronization algorithm to resolve any conflicts related to the state of data or resources. Faulty and adversarial peers make it challenging to achieve clock synchronization in a peer-to-peer distributed system. Clock-synchronization protocols such as the Network Time Protocol (NTP) and the Precision Time Protocol (PTP) are effective but only in a partially or fully trusted network. They fail to synchronize clocks in the presence of misbehaving peers who try to rewind or fast-forward time or introduce deadlocks purposely. This paper introduces BFT-Metronome, a Byzantine fault-tolerant clock synchronization algorithm for peer-to-peer distributed systems. The novel BFT-Metronome algorithm combines a sensor-fusion algorithm with a statistical outlier detection algorithm to enable participating peers to determine the most likely skew based on broadcast timestamps. The algorithm is designed to withstand up to N3 − 1 misbehaving participants in a network of N total participants, and the independently calculated offset is observed to be within 10 ms of precision vs. 40-100 ms in peer-to-peer distributed systems. The BFT-Metronome clock synchronization algorithm can also be applied to blockchain consensus protocols (such as Proof-of-Stake) that rely on weakly synchronized clocks. This is shown by integrating BFT-Metronome with the Lightweight Mining Algorithm to achieve consensus-round synchronization and timeouts. Then, generalization to other protocols is argued qualitatively. It can also be applied to large distributed systems to secure against insider threats during clock synchronization. © 2024 IEEE.

Heart disease (HD) stands as a major global health challenge, being a predominant cause of death and demanding intricate and costly detection methods. The widespread impact of heart failure, contributing to increased rates of morbidity and mortality, underscores the urgency for accurate and timely prediction and diagnosis. This is crucial for effective prevention, early detection, and treatment, thereby reducing the threat to individual health. However, the early and precise prediction of HD remains a significant challenge. The complexity of medical data poses a considerable challenge for healthcare professionals, who are required to interpret and utilize this information swiftly for effective intervention. Addressing this gap, our study introduces a novel Improved Explainable Learning-Based Technique (IELBT) for HD prediction. This technique harnesses a strategic combination of feature selection, Venn diagrams, data normalization methods, optimized parameters, and machine learning algorithms, specifically tailored for predicting HD. We evaluated the performance of our model using the Alizadeh Sani HD dataset, aiming to accurately detect the presence or absence of the condition. Our results demonstrate that the IELBT, employing a support vector machine with a robust scaling approach, optimal parameterization, and a data split ratio of 70:30, achieves an impressive accuracy rate of 96.00%. Beyond achieving high accuracy, the IELBT outperforms similar models in existing literature and provides significant interpretability and explanation, essential elements in the field of medical diagnosis. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024.

This work-in-progress paper investigates how virtual listening bystanders influence participants' gaze behavior and their perception of turn-taking during scripted conversations with embodied conversational agents (ECAs). 25 participants interacted with five ECAs - two speakers and three bystanders - across three conditions: no bystanders, bystanders exhibiting random gazing behavior, and social bystanders engaging in mutual gaze and backchanneling. Participants either observed the conversation or actively participated as speakers by reciting prompted *** results indicated that bystanders reduced the participants' attention to speakers, hindering their ability to anticipate turn changes and resulting in longer delays in shifting their gaze to the new speaker after an ECA yielded the turn. Random gazing bystanders were particularly noted for obscuring conversational flow. These findings underscore the challenges of designing effective and natural conversational environments, highlighting the need for careful consideration of ECA behaviors to enhance user engagement. © 2025 IEEE.

The medical community has more concern on lung cancer *** experts’physical segmentation of lung cancers is time-consuming and needs to be *** research study’s objective is to diagnose lung tumors at an early stage to extend the life of humans using deep learning ***-Aided Diagnostic(CAD)system aids in the diagnosis and shortens the time necessary to detect the tumor *** application of Deep Neural Networks(DNN)has also been exhibited as an excellent and effective method in classification and segmentation *** research aims to separate lung cancers from images of Magnetic Resonance Imaging(MRI)with threshold *** Honey hook process categorizes lung cancer based on characteristics retrieved using several *** this principle,the work presents a solution for image compression utilizing a Deep Wave Auto-Encoder(DWAE).The combination of the two approaches significantly reduces the overall size of the feature set required for any future classification process performed using *** proposed DWAE-DNN image classifier is applied to a lung imaging dataset with Radial Basis Function(RBF)*** study reported promising results with an accuracy of 97.34%,whereas using the Decision Tree(DT)classifier has an accuracy of 94.24%.The proposed approach(DWAE-DNN)is found to classify the images with an accuracy of 98.67%,either as malignant or normal *** contrast to the accuracy requirements,the work also uses the benchmark standards like specificity,sensitivity,and precision to evaluate the efficiency of the *** is found from an investigation that the DT classifier provides the maximum performance in the DWAE-DNN depending on the network’s performance on image testing,as shown by the data acquired by the categorizers themselves.
