Accurate assessment of forest biodiversity is crucial for ecosystem management and conservation. While traditional field surveys provide high-quality assessments, they are labor-intensive and spatially limited. This study investigates whether deep learning-based fusion of close-range sensing data from 2D orthophotos (12.5 cm resolution) and 3D airborne laser scanning (ALS) point clouds (8 points/m2) can enhance biodiversity assessment. We introduce the BioVista dataset, comprising 44 378 paired samples of orthophotos and ALS point clouds from temperate forests in Denmark, designed to explore multi-modal fusion approaches for biodiversity potential classification. Using deep neural networks (ResNet for orthophotos and PointVector for ALS point clouds), we investigate each data modality's ability to assess forest biodiversity potential, achieving mean accuracies of 69.4% and 72.8%, respectively. We explore two fusion approaches: a confidence-based ensemble method and a feature-level concatenation strategy, with the latter achieving a mean accuracy of 75.5%. Our results demonstrate that spectral information from orthophotos and structural information from ALS point clouds effectively complement each other in forest biodiversity assessment. © 2025, CC BY.

The Smart Power Grid (SPG) is pivotal in orchestrating and managing demand response in contemporary smart cities, leveraging the prowess of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). Within the immersive SPG environment, the ubiquitous deployment of smart meters stands as a testament to their paramount importance in the realm of vigilant monitoring and oversight. These smart meters are installed on high-tension electricity lines and transmit information about electricity outages and other issues to the utility center. To access services from utility centers, smart meters need to communicate securely over a public channel, even though the network itself is insecure. However, potential attacks from adversaries ( Ad) can exploit this communication. Therefore, protecting this communication is of utmost importance. Several privacy-preserving authentication protocols designed for SPG have been introduced in the literature. Nevertheless, a significant number of these protocols exhibit vulnerabilities to diverse security attacks. This article introduces a lightweight and anonymous authentication protocol specifically designed to address these concerns in the SPG environment. Our protocol ensures both security and efficiency, surpassing other comparable protocols in terms of its lightweight nature. By employing both formal and informal analysis, we showcase the robustness of our protocol against significant attacks while remaining lightweight. The proposed protocol provides added security features and incurs 23.8879% lower computation cost than related protocols. Consequently, our protocol is highly suitable for implementation in the SPG system. © 2020 IEEE.

computing electron repulsion integrals (ERIs) is the major computational bottleneck of many quantum mechanical simulation methods, requiring trillions of ERI evaluations per time step. While the computation of independent ERIs is embarrassingly parallel, the efficient computation of individual ERIs on modern processor cores is difficult due to both an insufficient cache size for intermediates of the computation and irregular memory access patterns that are difficult to vectorize. In this paper, we present how our implementation on the AI Engine (AIE) architecture addresses both of these problems. First, we have defined a flexible graph structure, which we call an ERI-Engine, that can be implemented for all 231 canonical ERI quartets from {ss|ss} to {hh| hh} by distributing the computation over 2–14 AIEs. Second, for the larger quartets, we have devised a novel vectorization scheme that leverages the advanced floating-point unit of the AIEs, while also supporting vectorization of independent ERIs for the smaller quartets. Finally, ERI-Engines are horizontally and vertically stackable to fill the entire AIE array, and in particular, the vertically stacked ERI-Engines form a column that uses one or more time-shared channels to stream the results out of the AIE array, almost completely hiding the computational phases of individual ERI-Engines. In terms of absolute performance, we are competitive with recent high-performance implementations of ERI algorithms on FPGAs (SERI) and GPUs (LibintX), as well as well-established highly optimized CPU libraries (Libint, Libcint), while being the unequivocal leader in terms of energy efficiency.

Basic Safety Messages (BSMs) exchanged among vehicles and roadside units through vehicular communications can significantly enhance road safety and improve traffic efficiency. Protecting the integrity of BSMs, which are transmitted wirelessly in plaintext, is critical for the proper operation of vehicular networks. As a result, various machine learning-based misbehavior detection systems have been proposed to identify corrupted BSMs. Recent studies have applied federated learning methods to further preserve user privacy while facilitating detection model updates. However, supervised federated learning cannot be directly applied since BSMs received by vehicles are unlabeled. In this paper, we propose a semi-supervised federated learning framework that enables the federated training process between vehicles and the server without transmitting any datasets. Our experimental results show that the performance of the proposed semi-supervised framework is very close to the centralized method, while preserving user privacy and reducing communication costs. © 2024 IEEE.

Federated learning (FL) has emerged as a powerful framework for training deep learning models across numerous distributed clients, where a central server distributes and aggregates model updates without accessing clients' raw data, ensuring privacy. However, this decentralized approach introduces significant challenges regarding fairness. Existing research shows that non-i.i.d. data distributions among clients can lead to biased global models, particularly affecting decisions based on sensitive attributes. This paper aims to investigate these fairness issues rigorously by analyzing how disparities in client data distribution impact model fairness. We conduct experiments using various models and datasets to evaluate and mitigate biases. We also propose novel data partitioning strategies to reflect real-world client data distributions accurately. Our finding shows that FL is highly vulnerable to the fairness problem due to the Non-IID property. Early diagnosis of osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) can inhibit the progression and improve femoral head preservation. The radiograph difference between early ONFH and healthy ones is not apparent to the naked eye. It is also hard to produce a large dataset to train the classification model. In this paper, we propose Asymmetric-Sensitive Transformer (AsT) to capture the uneven development of the bilateral femoral head to enable robust ONFH detection. Our ONFH detection is realized using the self-attention mechanism to femoral head regions while conferring sensitivity to the uneven development by the attention-shared transformer. The real-world experiment studies show that AsT achieves the best performance of AUC 0.9313 in the early diagnosis of ONFH and can find out misdiagnosis cases firmly. Parallel programs in high performance computing (HPC) continue to grow in complexity and scale in the exascale era. The diversity in hardware and parallel programming models make developing, optimizing, and maintaining parallel software even more burdensome for developers. One way to alleviate some of these burdens is with automated development and analysis tools. Such tools can perform complex and/or remedial tasks for developers that increase their productivity and decrease the chance for error. Until recently, such tools for code development and performance analysis have been limited in the complexity of tasks they can perform, especially for parallel programs. However, with recent advancements in language modeling, and the availability of large amounts of open-source code related data, these tools have started to utilize predictive language models to automate more complex tasks. In this paper, we show how large language models (LLMs) can be applied to tasks specific to high performance and scientific codes. We introduce a new dataset of HPC and scientific codes and use it to fine-tune several pre-trained models. We compare several pre-trained LLMs on HPC-related tasks and introduce a new model, HPC-Coder, fine-tuned on parallel codes. In our experiments, we show that this model can auto-complete HPC functions where generic models cannot, decorate for loops with OpenMP pragmas, and model performance changes in scientific application repositories as well as programming competition solutions. © 2024 Research Paper Proceedings of the ISC High Performance 2024. This study investigated the predictive ability of ten different machine learning (ML) models for diabetes using a dataset that was not evenly distributed. Additionally, the study evaluated the effectiveness of two oversampling and undersampling methods, namely the Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique (SMOTE) and the Near-Miss algorithm. Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) techniques were employed to enhance the interpretability of the model's predictions. The results indicate that the extreme gradient boosting (XGB) model combined with SMOTE oversampling technique exhibited the highest accuracy and an F1-score of 99% and 1.00 respectively. Furthermore, the utilization of XAI methods increased the dependability of the model's decision-making process, rendering it more appropriate for clinical use. These results imply that integrating XAI with ML and oversampling techniques can enhance the early detection and management of diabetes, leading to better diagnosis and intervention. © 2023 IEEE.

The widespread use of Android smartphones in daily life can be attributed to the extensive prevalence stemming from the Android OS and the availability of open-source applications. People have become accustomed to performing various tasks, such as online banking transactions, scheduling appointments, attending virtual meetings and classes, and online shopping, on their mobile devices instead of computers. However, the significant use of mobile phones also presents opportunities for attackers to access sensitive and confidential information without the user’s knowledge. Intruders often use malicious applications found on the Google Play Store and other third-party app markets. The increased volume of Android malware in recent years has severely threatened human privacy and security. In this paper, we present a novel solution that utilizes a stacking ensemble machine learning approach to detect whether an application is malware or benign, which achieved 98% accuracy and F1-Score, and to identify the malware category with 96% accuracy and F1-Score. We conducted the experiment on the CCCS-CIC-AndMal-2020 dataset, which comprises 27,125 samples. Static features such as permissions, meta-data, and intents were analyzed, and the performance of standard machine learning algorithms was compared to our proposed model. Our results demonstrate that the stacked ensemble model shows promising results for malware detection (binary classification) and malware type classification (multi-class classification). © 2024 The Author(s).
