Significant changes in the physicochemical properties of BC-containing particles during the cold season in Beijing

The ambient air quality has improved significantly under strict emission controls in Beijing,China over the last *** carbon(BC),as a short-lived climate forcer in ambient aerosols,profoundly impacts the air quality and *** studies have demonstrated a decline in the mass concentration of *** this study,we characterized the chemical compositions and size distributions of BC-containing particles during the cold season of 2022 in Beijing using state-of-the-art instruments capable of exclusively measuring BCcontaining *** optical properties of BC-containing particles were further calculated based on the Mie ***,we compared the properties of BC-containing particles in 2022 with the results of previous *** results showed that the diameters of BC cores became larger while the coating thickness of BC-containing particles became thinner in *** the coating materials,the mass fraction of nitrate increased obviously,and even replaced organic matter as the dominant component during the peak of the pollution *** in chemical compositions and size distributions resulted in lower mass absorption cross-sections(MAC)of BC-containing particles from 10.5±1.1 m^(2)/g in 2016 to 7.3±0.8 m^(2)/g in 2022,reduced by 30.5%.Our results demonstrate the synergistic benefits of air pollution control in improving air quality and mitigating climate ***,the MAC of BC adopted in climate models should vary with the changing air pollution *** study emphasizes that it is imperative to conduct long-term observations of BC-containing particles to better estimate BC’s climate effects.

Changes in ozone(O_(3))can be evaluated to inform policy effectiveness and develop reasonable emissions reduction *** study investigated the causes of summertime maximum daily 8-h average(MDA8)O_(3) variation between 2015 and 2020 in Nanjing,China,a megacity in the Yangtze River Delta(YRD)region,from the perspective of meteorological conditions and anthropogenic emissions of O_(3) precursors(VOCs and NO_(x)).Compared with 2015,the observed MDA8 O_(3) decreased by 19.1μg/m^(3) in August *** indirect and indirect impacts of meteorological conditions contributed 44%of the decline,with temperature,relative humidity,and wind playing important roles in the O_(3) *** O_(3) drop by 10.7μg/m^(3)(56%of the total decrease)may have been due to the decreases in anthropogenic emissions of VOCs and NO_(x) by 7.8%and 11.7%,*** longer hydroxyl(OH)radical chain length and higher ozone production efficiency(OPE)indicated that the reduction of anthropogenic emissions accelerated the RO_(x)(RO_(x)=OH+HO_(2)+RO_(2))and NO_(x) cycles in O_(3) production,making O_(3) more sensitive to NO_(x).This corresponded to the O_(3) formation shifting from a VOC-limited regime in 2015 to a transition regime in 2020 and O_(3) decrease with anthropogenic emission ***,the joint control of O_(3) precursor emissions can effectively mitigate O_(3) pollution in Nanjing.

In recent years,with the rapid development of deepfake technology,a large number of deepfake videos have emerged on the Internet,which poses a huge threat to national politics,social stability,and personal *** many existing deepfake detection methods exhibit excellent performance for known manipulations,their detection capabilities are not strong when faced with unknown ***,in order to obtain better generalization ability,this paper analyzes global and local inter-frame dynamic inconsistencies from the perspective of spatial and frequency domains,and proposes a Local region Frequency Guided Dynamic Inconsistency Network(LFGDIN).The network includes two parts:Global SpatioTemporal Network(GSTN)and Local Region Frequency Guided Module(LRFGM).The GSTN is responsible for capturing the dynamic information of the entire face,while the LRFGM focuses on extracting the frequency dynamic information of the eyes and *** LRFGM guides the GTSN to concentrate on dynamic inconsistency in some significant local regions through local region alignment,so as to improve the model's detection *** on the three public datasets(FF++,DFDC,and Celeb-DF)show that compared with many recent advanced methods,the proposed method achieves better detection results when detecting deepfake videos of unknown manipulation types.

On February 18–20, 2021, extreme rainfall occurred, which caused major flooding in several areas on the island of Java, one of which was the Jakarta area. A cold surge (CS) and a cross-equatorial northerly surge (CENS) were detected on that date, which were also followed by tropical cyclone (TC) Dujuan in the Philippines, as well as vortices in northern Australia. This paper examines the interaction mechanism of CS and CENS in influencing rainfall on Java Island at that time, which also coincided with the presence of TC Dujuan and water vortices, using analytical methods. This study uses several datasets in the form of temperature brightness data from Himawari, rainfall data from GSMaP, and several atmospheric parameters from ECMWF ERA5, as well as ASCAT data to identify CENS. The research results show that the impact of CENS and CS occurring simultaneously on rainfall was very significant on February 18–20, 2021, causing flooding in the western part of Java, especially Jakarta. This study highlights the strengthening of CS and CENS winds from TC Dujuan, which are pushing, and vortices in northern Australia, which are pulling. However, the vortex’s pull causes a weakening of the impact of CS and CENS on rainfall in West Java, which causes the release of water vapor along the CS and CENS paths. The impact of CENS and CS occurring simultaneously on rainfall causes persistent and even continuous rainfall throughout the day. This vortex not only brought a lot of water vapor along the CENS + CS route but also from the Indian Ocean, causing strong westerly winds that caused the vortex to pass along the south of Java Island. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

On January 8–10, 2021, there was heavy rainfall, which was also identified as the Borneo vortex (BV) and cold surge (CS) in Sumatra, Java, and Kalimantan. This paper examines the interaction mechanism of CS and BV in influencing extreme rainfall in Kalimantan, Sumatra, and Java during this period using analytical methods. This research uses brightness temperature or cloud top temperature (TBB) data from Himawari-8, rainfall data from GSMaP, and several atmospheric parameters from ECMWF ERA5. The research results show that CS + BV strengthens convective activity and causes high rainfall in the SCS near the north and west coasts of Kalimantan Island as a CS route. Increased convection activity and rainfall on the second and third days during CS + BV in SCS near the coast of Brunei and the Malaysian peninsula. The influence of CS on convective activity and rainfall is also significant in Sumatra and Java, even though there is blocking by BV, because there is support from westerly winds from the MJO that meet CS winds on the islands of Sumatra and southern Sumatra, which push CS winds toward Java Island and its surroundings. The increase in rainfall on the west coast of West Kalimantan is due to the location where the CS and BV winds meet, and the BV shifts because it is attracted by the CS. This also makes the impact of BV on rainfall insignificant on Kalimantan Island. The strengthening of moisture transport during CS + BV on January 8–10 was supported by moisture transport from the Indian Ocean, which was thought to be caused by the MJO. When CS + BV, there is movement of high relative humidity along the CS path. The very cold SST anomaly in the SCS is one of the triggers for the CS wind to move southward, which has a warmer SST anomaly. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

On May 6–8, 2022, a double vortex occurred in the Indian Ocean, which caused heavy rainfall in several areas on Sumatra Island. This paper examines the role of the double vortex in increasing rainfall and even causing flooding in several areas on the island of Sumatra using analytical methods. This research used brightness temperature (TBB) data from Himawari, rainfall estimation data from GSMaP, and several meteorological parameters from ECMWF ERA5 data. The research results report that there are strong westerly equatorial winds and easterly winds along the latitude 10–15°S, as well as strong easterly winds near the Malaysian peninsula due to an increase in SST anomalies around the location of the two vortexes. The very high SST anomaly at the vortex 1 location triggers a deflection of strong equatorial westerly winds rotating counterclockwise at the vortex 1 location. There is a strengthening of vortex 1 when a strong northeast wind from the South China Sea moves toward the vortex 1 location. At the location of vortex 2, the high SST anomaly causes strong equatorial westerly winds to rotate clockwise at the location of vortex 2, which is then followed by a strong deflection of easterly winds along the 10–15°S latitude to the north, causing vortex 2. The presence of high anomalies of zonal and meridional wind and the center of low pressure at the location of the two vortices also support the double vortex development. Vortex 1 influences increased rainfall on the northern equator of Sumatra Island, while Vortex 2 causes increased rainfall in the southern part of Sumatra. The decrease in rainfall from 2°S latitudes to equatorial latitudes is due to being in an area where the second wind of the vortex is deflected so that there is no water vapor heading toward that area. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Pyrometallurgical recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries from conventional roasting to synergistic pyrolysis with organic wastes

The synergistic pyrolysis has been increasingly used for recycling spent lithium-ion batteries(LIBs)and organic wastes(hydrogen and carbon sources),which are in-situ transformed into various reducing agents such as H_(2),CO,and char via carbothermal and/or gas thermal *** with the conventional roasting methods,this“killing two birds with one stone”strategy can not only reduce the cost and energy consumption,but also realize the valorization of organic *** paper concluded the research progress in synergistic pyrolysis recycling of spent LIBs and organic *** the one hand,valued metals such as Li,Co,Ni,and Mn can be recovered through the pyrolysis of the cathode materials with inherent organic materials(e.g.,separator,electrolyte)or graphite *** the pyrolysis process,the organic materials are decomposed into char and gases(e.g.,CO,H_(2),and CH_(4))as reducing agents,while the cathode material is decomposed and then converted into Li_(2)CO_(3) and low-valent transition metals or their oxides via in-situ thermal *** formed Li_(2)CO_(3) can be easily recovered by the water leaching process,while the formed transition metals or their oxides(e.g.,Co,CoO,Ni,MnO,etc.)can be recovered by the reductant-free acid leaching or magnetic separation *** the other hand,organic wastes(e.g.,biomass,plastics,etc.)as abundant hydrogen and carbon sources can be converted into gas(e.g.,H_(2),CO,etc.)and char via *** cathode materials are decomposed and subsequently reduced by the pyrolysis gas and *** addition,the pyrolysis oil and gas can be upgraded by catalytic reforming with the active metals derived from cathode ***,great challenges are proposed to promote this promising technology in the industrial applications.

Supported Co3O4 catalyst on modified UiO-66 by Ce4+ for completely catalytic oxidation of toluene

Creating a new low-temperature catalyst in decreasing the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) has great significance under different industrial production situations. In particular, the Zr-UiO-66 is optimized by different amounts of cerium, which not only enhances the physicochemical stability but also increases the number of active sites of CexZryUiO-66. Furthermore, the catalysts with Co3O4 nanoparticles supported on CexZryUiO-66 were successfully prepared via impregnation method. In the process of toluene degradation, the Co/Ce1Zr2-UiO-66 attains a 90% conversion rate at 210 °C with a space velocity of 60000 mL/(g·h) and toluene concentration at 1000 × 10−6. Meanwhile, the carbon dioxide selectivity reaches 100% at 218 °C. The Co/Ce1Zr2-UiO-66 shows great water resistance (3 vol% H2O). Multiple characterization methods were used to figure out the physicochemical properties of the catalysts. It is found that the addition of an appropriate amount of cerium can enhance stability of UiO-66 and surface lattice oxygen proportion. Additionally, the stronger electron transfer between Ce4+ and Co2+ enables the Co/Ce1Zr2-UiO-66 to possess more active surface oxygen species and Co3+ cationic species in all samples. © 2024 Chinese Society of Rare Earths

The pan-Arctic is confronted with air pollution transported from lower *** have shown that aerosols help increase plant photosynthesis through the diffuse radiation fertilization effects(DRFEs).While such DRFEs have been explored at low to middle latitudes,the aerosol impacts on pan-Arctic ecosystems and the contributions by anthropogenic and natural emission sources remain less ***,we perform regional simulations at 0.2o×0.2ousing a well-validated vegetation model(Yale Interactive terrestrial Biosphere,YIBs)in combination with multi-source of observations to quantify the impacts of aerosol DRFEs on the net primary productivity(NPP)in the pan-Arctic during *** show that aerosol DRFEs increase pan-Arctic NPP by 2.19 Pg C(12.8%)yr^(-1)under clear-sky conditions,in which natural and anthropogenic sources contribute to 8.9% and 3.9%,*** all-sky conditions,such DRFEs are largely dampened by cloud to only 0.26 Pg C(1.24%)yr^(-1),with contributions of 0.65% by natural and 0.59% by anthropogenic *** aerosols cause a positive NPP trend of 0.022% yr^(-1)following the increased fire activities in the *** contrast,anthropogenic aerosols induce a negative trend of-0.01% yr^(-1)due to reduced emissions from the middle *** trends in aerosol DRFEs show a turning point in the year of 2007 with more positive NPP trends by natural aerosols but negative NPP trends by anthropogenic aerosols *** affected by modeling uncertainties,this study suggests a likely increasing impact of aerosols on terrestrial ecosystems in the pan-Arctic under global warming.
