The paper investigates the performance of a hybrid satellite-terrestrial cooperative network (HSTCN), where some terrestrial amplify-and-forward (AF) relays are employed to assist the signal transmission from a satellite to a destination, which is corrupted by multiple co-channel interferences (CCIs). In this system, the satellite links undergo Shadowing-Rician fading while the terrestrial links experience Rayleigh fading. Specifically, by assuming that maximum ratio combining (MRC) is used at the destination, we first derive the moment generating function (MGF) of the output signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR). With the help of MGF, we then present the analytical average symbol error rate (ASER) expression for the considered cooperative system. Moreover, to gain further insights, the asymptotic ASER analysis in terms of the diversity order and array gain is also developed. Finally, numerical results are given to demonstrate the validity of the performance analysis and the impacts of shadowing parameters, relay number and CCIs on the considered HSTCN. © 2014 IEEE.

Microarray technology has become a power tool in the field of bioinformatics. It is used to measure gene expression levels and similar to any other image capturing processes is prone to noise. There are different kinds of noise, during preparation, hybridization and scanning in microarray images which usually are modeled by Gaussian noise. Since introduction of wavelets in 1970s, many more forms and extensions of this transform have been developed and used, such as stationary wavelet transform (SWT), complex wavelet transform (CWT), curvelet transform (CURV) and contourlet transform (CNT). By developing of more sparse transforms, it is important to have a perspective of how efficient the transforms are in different applications, such as microarray image analysis. In this paper, we compare the efficiency of common sparse transforms including ordinary discrete wavelet transform (DWT), SWT, CWT, CURV, CNT, Contourlet-SD decomposition, steerable pyramid (STP) and shearlet transform (SHR) for microarray image denoising. Therefore after converting microarray image into x-let transform, BayesShrink method, soft and hard thresholding are used to perform denoising of these images. Both local and general thresholds are calculated for each subband in order to evaluate the effect of incorporating intrascale dependency on top of sparsity property in statistical modeling of x-let's coefficients. Our simulation results show that CWT and SHR outperforms the others when using global thresholding and SWT is the preferred transform when using local thresholding. Although STP and SHR have better performance for some criteria like structural similarity (SSIM) index, but CWT is faster.

Spatial modulation (SM) is a relatively new multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology that can provide high data rate with reasonable spectral efficiency. In this paper, the bit error rate (BER) performance of SM systems under vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) channel models is investigated. The theoretical BER expression is given. The impact of some V2V channel model parameters on the underlying space-time correlation function (STCF) and the BER performance of SM systems are also studied. Simulation results indicate that modulation schemes, maximum Doppler frequency, the distance between the transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx), and antenna element spacings can affect the performance of SM systems.

Femto base stations constitute a promising solution to cope with the dramatic increase in mobile data traffic, but they also contribute to increase the network power consumption. Traditionally, full power transmissions are used to satisfy the users' data rate demands, causing interference to neighboring cells. Cell breathing can reduce the total transmit power by adjusting the cell size to the traffic load, hence limiting interference. However, it requires full knowledge of the channel conditions and power allocation strategies of neighboring cells. Its implementation becomes more challenging in broadband heterogeneous networks due to the channel frequency selectivity, the power difference between base station types, and the required network coordination. Therefore, we propose a cell breathing approach for green heterogeneous networks, referred to as path loss-based cell breathing (PL-CB), which uses only path loss information to limit the interference caused to neighboring cells. It achieves a higher energy efficiency and a larger achievable rate region than other state-of-the-art techniques with negligible degradation with respect to the approach with full knowledge of the channel and transmit powers of neighboring cells.

For the spatially correlated multiuser MIMO-OFDM channels, the conventional iterative MMSE-SIC detection suffers from a considerable performance loss. In this paper, we use the factor graph framework to design robust detection algorithms by clustering a group of symbols to combat the spatial correlation and using the principle of expectation propagation to improve message passing. Furthermore, as the complexity of detection becomes one of the issues in the design of large-scale multiuser MIMO-OFDM systems, we propose a low-complexity approximate message-passing algorithm by opening the channel transition node, which eliminates the expensive matrix inversions involved in the MMSE-SIC based algorithms. Finally, numerical results are presented to verify the proposed algorithms.

We consider the problem of finding secrecy rate of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wire-tap channel. A transmitter, a legitimate receiver, and an eavesdropper are all equipped with multiple antennas. The channel states from the transmitter to the legitimate user and to the eavesdropper are assumed to be known at the transmitter. In this contribution, we address the problem of finding the optimal precoder/transmit covariance matrix maximizing the secrecy rate of the given wiretap channel. The problem formulation is shown to be equivalent to a difference of convex functions programming problem and an efficient algorithm for addressing this problem is developed. © VDE Verlag GMBH.

In principle, quantum key distribution (QKD) offers unconditional security based on the laws of physics. Unfortunately, all previous QKD experiments assume perfect state preparation in their security analysis. Therefore, the generated key is not proven to be secure in the presence of unavoidable modulation errors. The key reason that modulation errors are not considered in previous QKD experiments lies in a crucial weakness of the standard Gottesman-Lo-Lütkenhaus-Preskill (GLLP) model, namely, it is not loss tolerant and Eve may in principle enhance imperfections through losses. Here, we propose a QKD protocol that is loss tolerant to state preparation flaws. Importantly, we show conclusively that the state preparation process in QKD can be much less precise than initially thought. Our method can also be applied to other quantum cryptographic protocols.
