Since smart antenna systems which employ spread spectrum methods are sensitive to a time-correlated non-stationary jammer precise excision of the jammer is required. To remove this non-stationary jammer, we propose, a new adaptive Gabor jammer exciser, which can track optimally the change of the time and frequency densities of the jammer. To find the optimum time-frequency Gabor expansion for the received signal, we utilize the optimum projection method. In the time-frequency Gabor domain, we remove the non-stationary jammer with a constant false alarm rate, and reconstruct the jammer-removed signal from the remaining Gabor coefficients. This approach exhibits better performance than the non-optimized Gabor transform exciser.

This paper presents an adaptive predistorter to compensate nonlinear distortion introduced by the high power amplifier (HPA) in OFDM systems. OFDM systems are susceptible to HPA nonlinearities in particular because of their large peak-to-average power ratios. In contrast to earlier work, the adaptive predistorter in this paper is based on both the direct and indirect learning architectures, and utilizes a complex Volterra series which is known to be suitable for compensating nonlinear phenomena. It is shown that the new predistorter scheme exhibits faster convergence than the previous method based on the indirect learning architecture only. In addition, the performance of the predistorter for OFDM systems is evaluated in terms of total degradation, optimal output backoff, and BER.

Based on the mechanisms underlying the performance of fractal and DWT, one method using fractal-based selfquantization coding approach to code different subband coefficients of DWT is presented. Within this method finer coefficients are fractal encoded according to the successive coarser ones. Self-similarities inherent between parent and their children at the same spatial location of the adjacent scales of similar orientation are exploited to predict variation of information across wavelet scales. On the other hand, with respect to the HVS model, we assign different error thresholds to different scales and different shape of range blocks to different orientations of the same scale, by which the perceptually lossless high compression ratio can be achieved and the matching processing can be quickened dramatically.

An algorithm for blind ISI cancellation in multi-user systems is developed in this paper. By minimizing the distance between the output of a filter and a reference signal with different time delay for two filters, the output of one filter turns out to be exactly equal to the ISI component of the output of the other filter. The difference between the output of these filters is the ISI-free estimate of the signal. With an appropriate selection of the time delay introduced for the reference signal, any coefficient of the channel impulse response which determines the scale of ISI-free estimate, can be anchored accordingly. computer simulation has been conducted to illustrate the performance of this new method.

Video object segmentation for object based video coding according to MPEG-4 should be able to combine many features of the image sequence to achieve high quality object segmentation. The significant features include color, motion vector and change information. This paper presents an object segmentation algorithm where the image features are combined for use in the segmentation process. A fast recursive shortest spanning tree (FRSST) algorithm is used to segment the image into different intensity regions because of the good image segmentation performance and the fast algorithm. Motion vectors are estimated from consecutive frames and searched by thresholding hierarchical block matching (HBM) which require low computation and give acceptable results. After that many features are integrated in the segmentation decision process. Then, the postprocessing refines the final segmentation output. The results from some test sequences especially in a video conference sequence have a good performance and show the object of interest boundary clearly.

Stereophonic sound becomes more important in a growing number of hands-free applications where spatial realism is demanded. Such hands-free systems need stereophonic acoustic echo cancellers to reduce echoes that result from coupling between loudspeakers and microphones. In this paper, we propose a new adaptive algorithm for an stereophonic acoustic echo canceller based on human auditory properties and affine projection (AP) algorithm. The proposed algorithm employs a pre-processor generating speech-like noise to decorrelate the input signals without degrading perceptual speech quality. The decorrelation is based on the masking patterns of the human auditory system. By showing that the AP algorithm can be represented by a vector update as a combination of the Gram-Schmidt (GS) orthogonalization followed by the normalized LMS (NLMS) algorithm, the proposed adaptive algorithm integrates the pre-processor into the adaptive algorithm. Subjective listening test and computer simulation show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

In discrete multi-tone (DMT) systems a cyclic prefix is added to the front of each modulated symbol-frame in order to partition the whole channel into many narrow independent sub-channels. When the length of the cyclic prefix is shorter than the channel length, inter-carrier interference (ICI) and inter-symbol interference (ISI) will occur in the output signal. This paper presents a decision feedback equalizer (DFE) on a symbol level to deal with this problem. The DFE first removes the ISI. It then recovers the distortion caused by ICI. The advantage of this equalizer is that the cyclic prefix for the equalizer can be discarded thus leads to no bandwidth loss. Several simulation examples are presented to show the significant improvement of the equalized signal over the unequalized one.

The quadtree image formation technique is a computationally efficient approximation to standard backprojection. Where the computational load of backprojection is O(N/sup 3/) for N sensors forming an N/spl times/N image, the quadtree method uses a divide-and-conquer strategy similar to the fast Fourier transform (FFT) to reduce the computational load down to O(N/sup 2/ log(N)). However, the quadtree introduces errors in the relative time shifts used to focus pulses. These errors reduce the signal gain in the mainlobe response for isotropic point-like targets. In addition, the oscillations of the sidelobes increase from stage to stage. This paper develops performance bounds for the mainlobe losses under far field conditions and relates these bounds to the slow-time Nyquist rate.

We propose a novel dual-rate synchronous multi-carrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) system. In this system, all users are designed to have the same processing gain and share the same set of subcarriers. Two decorrelator-based receivers are implemented and analysed in this paper for the dual-rate MC-CDMA system; a high-rate decorrelator (HRD) matches high data rate and a low-rate decorrelator (LRD) matches low data rate. It has been proved that for low-rate users, HRD and LRD perform similarly, while for high-rate users, LRD outperforms HRD when the signature sequences of high-rate and low-rate users are not orthogonal. Furthermore, we propose a blind multiuser detection method, which can be implemented adaptively by applying the bootstrap algorithm. It is shown that the blind adaptive detector is near-far resistant and has performance similar to that of minimum mean square error (MMSE) detector.
