Radiomics model based on computed tomography images for prediction of radiation-induced optic neuropathy following radiotherapy of brain and head and neck tumors

Purpose: We aimed to build a machine learning-based model to predict radiation-induced optic neuropathy in patients who had treated head and neck cancers with radiotherapy. Materials and methods: To measure radiation-induced optic neuropathy, the visual evoked potential values were obtained in both case and control groups and compared. Radiomics features were extracted from the area segmented which included the right and left optic nerves and chiasm. We integrated CT image features with dosimetric and clinical data subsequently, ranked 5 supervised ML models Bernoulli Naive Bayes, Decision Tree, Gradient Boosting Decision Trees, K-Nearest Neighbor, and Random Forest on 4 input datasets to predict radiation-induced visual complications classifiers by implementing 5-fold cross-validation. The F1 score, accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and area under the ROC curve were compared to access prediction capability. Results: radiation-induced optic neuropathy affected 31 % of the patients. 856 radiomic characteristics were extracted and selected from each segmented area. Decision Tree and Random Forest with the highest AUC (97 % and 95 % respectively) among the five classifiers were the most powerful algorithms to predict radiation-induced optic neuropathy. Chiasm with higher sensitivity and precision was able to predict radiation-induced optic neuropathy better than right or left optic nerve or combination of all radiomic features. Conclusion: We found that combination of radiomic, dosimetric, and clinical factors can predict radiation-induced optic neuropathy after radiation treatment with high accuracy. To acquire more reliable results, it is recommended to conduct visual evoked potential tests before and after radiation therapy, with multiple follow-up courses and more patients. © 2024 The Authors

vision-based occupancy prediction, also known as 3D Semantic Scene Completion (SSC), presents a significant challenge in computer vision. Previous methods, confined to onboard processing, struggle with simultaneous geometric and semantic estimation, continuity across varying viewpoints, and single-view occlusion. Our paper introduces OccFiner, a novel offboard framework designed to enhance the accuracy of vision-based occupancy predictions. OccFiner operates in two hybrid phases: 1) a multi-to-multi local propagation network that implicitly aligns and processes multiple local frames for correcting onboard model errors and consistently enhancing occupancy accuracy across all distances. 2) the region-centric global propagation, focuses on refining labels using explicit multi-view geometry and integrating sensor bias, especially to increase the accuracy of distant occupied voxels. Extensive experiments demonstrate that OccFiner improves both geometric and semantic accuracy across various types of coarse occupancy, setting a new state-of-the-art performance on the SemanticKITTI dataset. Notably, OccFiner elevates vision-based SSC models to a level even surpassing that of LiDAR-based onboard SSC models. Furthermore, OccFiner is the first to achieve automatic annotation of SSC in a purely vision-based approach. Quantitative experiments prove that OccFiner successfully facilitates occupancy data loop-closure in autonomous driving. Additionally, we quantitatively and qualitatively validate the superiority of the offboard approach on city-level SSC static maps. Encoded (or ciphered) manuscripts are a special type of historical documents that contain encrypted text. The automatic recognition of this kind of documents is challenging because: 1) the cipher alphabet changes from one document to another, 2) there is a lack of annotated corpus for training and 3) touching symbols make the symbol segmentation difficult and complex. To overcome these difficulties, we propose a novel method for handwritten ciphers recognition based on few-shot object detection. Our method first detects all symbols of a given alphabet in a line image, and then a decoding step maps the symbol similarity scores to the final sequence of transcribed symbols. By training on synthetic data, we show that the proposed architecture is able to recognize handwritten ciphers with unseen alphabets. In addition, if few labeled pages with the same alphabet are used for fine tuning, our method surpasses existing unsupervised and supervised HTR methods for ciphers recognition. © 2020 IEEE

This paper presents a summary of the Competition on Face Presentation Attack Detection Based on Privacy-aware Synthetic Training Data (SynFacePAD 2023) held at the 2023 International Joint Conference on Biometrics (IJCB 2023). The competition attracted a total of 8 participating teams with valid submissions from academia and industry. The competition aimed to motivate and attract solutions that target detecting face presentation attacks while considering synthetic-based training data motivated by privacy, legal and ethical concerns associated with personal data. To achieve that, the training data used by the participants was limited to synthetic data provided by the organizers. The submitted solutions presented innovations and novel approaches that led to outperforming the considered baseline in the investigated benchmarks. © 2023, CC BY-NC-SA.

This paper investigates the optimal landing trajectory and control procedure when a helicopter undergoes autorotation due to tail rotor drive failure (TRDF), in which an optimal control methodology is proposed. First, a helicopter flight dynamics model with TRDF was developed. Then, the autorotation in TRDF was converted to be a nonlinear optimal control problem, solved by direct node collocation method and sequential quadratic programming algorithm. Finally, a model helicopter (Z11) with single main rotor and tail rotor was used to demonstrate the proposed approach. An optimal autorotation landing procedure in TRDF was determined accordingly. Results indicate that the airframe will immediately respond to the excess torque generated by the main rotor via yawing, sideslip and rolling when TRDF occurs. The pilot is recommended to shut down the engine and perform a series of critical operations to stabilize the violent yaw and roll movements. In addition, flight test data were used to validate the numerical simulations of autorotation landing. The proposed optimal control approach provides a useful tool to investigate helicopter TRDF autorotation landing procedure.

Federated Learning While Providing Model as a Service: Joint Training and Inference Optimization

While providing machine learning model as a service to process users’ inference requests, online applications can periodically upgrade the model utilizing newly collected data. Federated learning (FL) is beneficial for enabling the training of models across distributed clients while keeping the data locally. However, existing work has overlooked the coexistence of model training and inference under clients’ limited resources. This paper focuses on the joint optimization of model training and inference to maximize inference performance at clients. Such an optimization faces several challenges. The first challenge is to characterize the clients’ inference performance when clients may partially participate in FL. To resolve this challenge, we introduce a new notion of age of model (AoM) to quantify client-side model freshness, based on which we use FL’s global model convergence error as an approximate measure of inference performance. The second challenge is the tight coupling among clients’ decisions, including participation probability in FL, model download probability, and service rates. Toward the challenges, we propose an online problem approximation to reduce the problem complexity and optimize the resources to balance the needs of model training and inference. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm improves the average inference accuracy by up to 12%. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Photodynamic therapy(PDT)is attracting attention as a next-generation cancer treatment that can selectively destroy malignant tissues,exhibit fewer side effects,and lack pain during *** PDT systems have recently been developed to resolve the issues of bulky and expensive conventional PDT systems and to implement continuous and repetitive *** implantable PDT systems,however,are not able to perform multiple functions simultaneously,such as modulating light intensity,measuring,and transmitting tumor-related data,resulting in the complexity of cancer ***,we introduce a flexible and fully implantable wireless optoelectronic system capable of continuous and effective cancer treatment by fusing PDT and hyperthermia and enabling tumor size monitoring in *** system exploits micro inorganic light-emitting diodes(μ-LED)that emit light with a wavelength of 624 nm,designed not to affect surrounding normal tissues by utilizing a fully programmable light intensity ofμ-LED and precisely monitoring the tumor size by Si phototransistor during a long-term implantation(2–3 weeks).The superiority of simultaneous cancer treatment and tumor size monitoring capabilities of our system operated by wireless power and data transmissions with a cell phone was confirmed through in vitro experiments,ray-tracing simulation results,and a tumor xenograft mouse model in *** all-in-one single system for cancer treatment offers opportunities to not only enable effective treatment of tumors located deep in the tissue but also enable precise and continuous monitoring of tumor size in real-time.
