The KM3NeT Collaboration has tackled a common challenge faced by the astroparticle physics community, namely adapting the experiment-specific simulation software to work with the CORSIKA air shower simulation output. The proposed solution is an extension of the open source code gSeaGen, which allows the transport of muons generated by CORSIKA to a detector of any size at an arbitrary depth. The gSeaGen code was not only extended in terms of functionality but also underwent a thorough redesign of the muon propagation routine, resulting in a more accurate and efficient simulation. This paper presents the capabilities of the new gSeaGen code as well as prospects for further developments. The challenges in this work included interfacing the CORSIKA binary output, efficient handling of already generated events to reduce the overall computational cost, and preserving all the additional available information, which can be invaluable in physics analyses. Solution method: The readout of CORSIKA simulation was adapted from the base script provided together with CORSIKA and implemented as a standalone flux driver in gSeaGen. The propagation routine has been redesigned to support the geometry of extensive air shower simulations and to improve its efficiency in propagating particles to the detector. Correlation filters have attracted growing attention due to their high efficiency, which have been well studied for binary classification. However, by setting the desired output to be a fixed Gaussian function, the conventional multi-class classification based on correlation filters becomes problematic due to the under-fitting in many real-world applications. In this paper, we propose an adaptive multi-class correlation filters (AMCF) method based on an alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) framework. Within this framework, we introduce an adaptive output to alleviate the under-fitting problem in the ADMM iterations. By doing so, a closed-form sub-solution is obtained and further used to constrain the optimization objective, simplifying the entire inference mechanism. The proposed approach is successfully combined with the Histograms of Oriented Gradients (HOG) features, multi-channel features and convolution features, and achieves superior performances over state-of-the-arts in two multi-class classification tasks including handwritten digits recognition and RGBD-based action recognition. © Springer International Publishing AG 2016.

The KM3NeT observatory detected the most energetic neutrino candidate ever observed, with an energy between 72 PeV and 2.6 EeV at the 90 % confidence level. The observed neutrino is likely of cosmic origin. In this article, it is investigated if the neutrino could have been produced within the Milky Way. Considering the low fluxes of the Galactic diffuse emission at these energies, the lack of a nearby potential Galactic particle accelerator in the direction of the event and the difficulty to accelerate particles to such high energies in Galactic systems, we conclude that if the event is indeed cosmic, it is most likely of extragalactic origin. We present a framework for planning collision-free and safe paths online for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) in unknown environments. We build up on our previous work and propose an improved approach. While preserving its main modules (mapping, planning and mission handler), the framework now considers motion constraints to plan feasible paths, i.e., those that meet vehicle's motion capabilities. The new framework also incorporates a risk function to avoid navigating close to nearby obstacles, and reuses the last best known solution to eliminate time-consuming pruning routines. To evaluate this approach, we use the Sparus II AUV, a torpedo-shaped vehicle performing autonomous missions in a 2-dimensional workspace. We validate the framework's new features by solving tasks in both simulation and real-world in-water trials and comparing results with our previous approach.

Feedback control of robotic systems interacting with the environment through contacts is a central topic in legged robotics. One of the main challenges posed by this problem is the choice of a model sufficiently complex to capture the discontinuous nature of the dynamics but simple enough to allow online computations. Linear models have proved to be the most effective and reliable choice for smooth systems; we believe that piecewise affine (PWA) models represent their natural extension when contact phenomena occur. Discrete-time PWA systems have been deeply analyzed in the field of hybrid Model Predictive Control (MPC), but the straightforward application of MPC techniques to complex systems, such as a humanoid robot, leads to mixed-integer optimization problems which are not solvable at real-time rates. Explicit MPC methods can construct the entire control policy offline, but the resulting policy becomes too complex to compute for systems at the scale of a humanoid robot. In this paper we propose a novel algorithm which splits the computational burden between an offline sampling phase and a limited number of online convex optimizations, enabling the application of hybrid predictive controllers to higher-dimensional systems. In doing so we are willing to partially sacrifice feedback optimality, but we set stability of the system as an inviolable requirement. Simulation results of a simple planar humanoid that balances by making contact with its environment are presented to validate the proposed controller.

Finding matching images across large datasets plays a key role in many computer vision applications such as structure-from-motion (SfM), multi-view 3D reconstruction, image retrieval, and image-based localisation. In this paper, we propose finding matching and non-matching pairs of images by representing them with neural network based feature vectors, whose similarity is measured by Euclidean distance. The feature vectors are obtained with convolutional neural networks which are learnt from labeled examples of matching and non-matching image pairs by using a contrastive loss function in a Siamese network architecture. Previously Siamese architecture has been utilised in facial image verification and in matching local image patches, but not yet in generic image retrieval or whole-image matching. Our experimental results show that the proposed features improve matching performance compared to baseline features obtained with networks which are trained for image classification task. The features generalize well and improve matching of images of new landmarks which are not seen at training time. This is despite the fact that the labeling of matching and non-matching pairs is imperfect in our training data. The results are promising considering image retrieval applications, and there is potential for further improvement by utilising more training image pairs with more accurate ground truth labels.
