Localizing the origin of a music piece around the world enables some interesting possibilities for geospatial music retrieval, for instance, location-aware music retrieval or recommendation for travelers or exploring non-Western music – a task neglected for a long time in music information retrieval (MIR). While previous approaches for the task of determining the origin of music either focused solely on exploiting the audio content or web resources, we propose a method that fuses features from both sources in a way that outperforms standalone approaches. To this end, we propose the use of block-level features inferred from the audio signal to model music content. We show that these features outperform timbral and chromatic features previously used for the task. On the other hand, we investigate a variety of strategies to construct web-based predictors from web pages related to music pieces. We assess different parameters for this kind of predictors (e.g., number of web pages considered) and define a confidence threshold for prediction. Fusing the proposed audio-and web-based methods by a weighted Borda rank aggregation technique, we show on a previously used dataset of music from 33 countries around the world that the median placing error can be reduced from 1,815 to 0 kilometers using K-nearest neighbor regression. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2016.

Graphical models, as applied to multi-target prediction problems, commonly utilize interaction terms to impose structure among the output variables. Often, such structure is based on the assumption that related outputs need to be similar and interaction terms that force them to be closer are adopted. Here we relax that assumption and propose a feature that is based on distance and can adapt to ensure that variables have smaller or larger difference in values. We utilized a Gaussian Conditional Random Field model, where we have extended its originally proposed interaction potential to include a distance term. The extended model is compared to the baseline in various structured regression setups. An increase in predictive accuracy was observed on both synthetic examples and real-world applications, including challenging tasks from climate and healthcare domains.

Structured regression has been successfully used in many applications where explanatory and response variables are inter-correlated, such as in weighted attributed networks. One of structured models, Gaussian Conditional Random Fields (GCRF), utilizing multiple unstructured models to learn the non-linear relationships between node attributes and the structured response variable, achieves high prediction accuracy. However, it does not scale well with large networks. We propose a novel model, called Scalable Approximate GCRF (SA-GCRF), which integrates weighted attributed network compression with GCRF, with the aim of making GCRF applicable to large networks. The model consists of three steps: first, it compresses a network into a smaller one by generalizing nodes into supernodes and edges into superedges; then, it applies GCRF to the reduced network; and finally, it unfolds the predicted response variables into the original nodes. Our hypothesis is that the reduced network maintains most information of the original network such that the loss in prediction accuracy obtained by GCRF on the reduced network is minor. The comprehensive experimental results indicate that SA-GCRF was 150-520 times faster than standard GCRF and 11-29 times faster than state-of-the-art UmGCRF on large networks, and provided regression results where GCRF and UmGCRF were not applicable. Furthermore, SA-GCRF achieved a similar regression accuracy, 0.76, to the one obtained from the original real-world weighted attributed citation network, even after compressing the network to 10% of its size.

Computed tomography (CT) examinations are commonly used to predict lung nodule malignancy in patients, which are shown to improve noninvasive early diagnosis of lung cancer. It remains challenging for computational approaches to achieve performance comparable to experienced radiologists. Here we present NoduleX, a systematic approach to predict lung nodule malignancy from CT data, based on deep learning convolutional neural networks (CNN). For training and validation, we analyze >1000 lung nodules in images from the LIDC/IDRI cohort. All nodules were identified and classified by four experienced thoracic radiologists who participated in the LIDC project. NoduleX achieves high accuracy for nodule malignancy classification, with an AUC of ~0.99. This is commensurate with the analysis of the dataset by experienced radiologists. Our approach, NoduleX, provides an effective framework for highly accurate nodule malignancy prediction with the model trained on a large patient population. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted gaps in health surveillance systems, disease prevention, and treatment globally. Among the many factors that might have led to these gaps is the issue of the financing of national health systems, especially in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), as well as a robust global system for pandemic preparedness. We aimed to provide a comparative assessment of global health spending at the onset of the pandemic;characterise the amount of development assistance for pandemic preparedness and response disbursed in the first 2 years of the COVID-19 pandemic;and examine expectations for future health spending and put into context the expected need for investment in pandemic preparedness. Methods: In this analysis of global health spending between 1990 and 2021, and prediction from 2021 to 2026, we estimated four sources of health spending: development assistance for health (DAH), government spending, out-of-pocket spending, and prepaid private spending across 204 countries and territories. We used the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)'s Creditor Reporting System (CRS) and the WHO Global Health Expenditure database (GHED) to estimate spending. We estimated development assistance for general health, COVID-19 response, and pandemic preparedness and response using a keyword search. Health spending estimates were combined with estimates of resources needed for pandemic prevention and preparedness to analyse future health spending patterns, relative to need. Findings: In 2019, at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, US$9·2 trillion (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 9·1–9·3) was spent on health worldwide. We found great disparities in the amount of resources devoted to health, with high-income countries spending $7·3 trillion (95% UI 7·2–7·4) in 2019;293·7 times the $24·8 billion (95% UI 24·3–25·3) spent by low-income countries in 2019. Background: The causes for immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs) are diverse and the incidence trends of IMIDs from specific causes are rarely studied. The study aims to investigate the pattern and trend of IMIDs from 1990 to 2019. Methods: We collected detailed information on six major causes of IMIDs, including asthma, inflammatory bowel disease, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and atopic dermatitis, between 1990 and 2019, derived from the Global Burden of Disease study in 2019. The average annual percent change (AAPC) in number of incidents and age standardized incidence rate (ASR) on IMIDs, by sex, age, region, and causes, were calculated to quantify the temporal trends. Findings: In 2019, rheumatoid arthritis, atopic dermatitis, asthma, multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, inflammatory bowel disease accounted 1.59%, 36.17%, 54.71%, 0.09%, 6.84%, 0.60% of overall new IMIDs cases, respectively. The ASR of IMIDs showed substantial regional and global variation with the highest in High SDI region, High-income North America, and United States of America. Throughout human lifespan, the age distribution of incident cases from six IMIDs was quite different. Globally, incident cases of IMIDs increased with an AAPC of 0.68 and the ASR decreased with an AAPC of −0.34 from 1990 to 2019. The incident cases increased across six IMIDs, the ASR of rheumatoid arthritis increased (0.21, 95% CI 0.18, 0.25), while the ASR of asthma (AAPC = −0.41), inflammatory bowel disease (AAPC = −0.72), multiple sclerosis (AAPC = −0.26), psoriasis (AAPC = −0.77), and atopic dermatitis (AAPC = −0.15) decreased. The ASR of overall and six individual IMID increased with SDI at regional and global level. Countries with higher ASR in 1990 experienced a more rapid decrease in ASR. Understanding traffic scene images taken from vehicle mounted cameras provides important information for high level tasks such as autonomous driving and advanced driver assistance. The problem is hard due to challenges from weather and illumination variation. To facilitate the research against such challenges, in this paper we present a new benchmark for cross-weather traffic scene understanding. The dataset consists of 1,356 traffic scene images collected at 226 different locations. For each location, there are six images taken by a vehicle mounted camera under different weather/illumination conditions including sunny day, night, snowy day, rainy night and cloudy days. We manually annotated each image with scene understanding labels such as road, sky, building, etc. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first carefully collected benchmark for cross-weather traffic scenes. In addition, we also provide results from two popular scene parsing systems as the baselines. We expect the benchmark to help boost research in improving robustness of traffic scene understanding algorithms.

High false alarm rates in intensive care units (ICUs) cause desensitization among care providers, thus risking patients' lives. Providing early detection of true and false cardiac arrhythmia alarms can alert hospital personnel and avoid alarm fatigue, so that they can act only on true life-threatening alarms, hence improving efficiency in ICUs. However, suppressing false alarms cannot be an excuse to suppress true alarm detection rates. In this study, we investigate a cost-sensitive approach for false alarm suppression while keeping near perfect true alarm detection rates. Our experiments on two life threatening cardiac arrhythmia datasets from Physionet's MIMIC II repository provide evidence that the proposed method is capable of identifying patterns that can distinguish false and true alarms using on average 60% of the available time series' length. Using temporal uncertainty estimates of time series predictions, we were able to estimate the confidence in our early classification predictions, therefore providing a cost-sensitive prediction model for ECG signal classification. The results from the proposed method are interpretable, providing medical personnel a visual verification of the predicted results. In conducted experiments, moderate false alarm suppression rates were achieved (34.29% for Asystole and 20.32% for Ventricular Tachycardia) while keeping near 100% true alarm detection, outperforming the state-of-the-art methods, which compromise true alarm detection rate for higher false alarm suppression rate, on these challenging applications. © 2015 IEEE.
