How the ability to analyse tendencies influences decision satisfaction

Using agents to represent decision-makers is a complex task. It is important that agents can understand the context and be more proactive. Here we propose a model and an algorithm that will allow the agent to analyse tendencies regarding the number of supporters for each alternative along the process. It is intended that agents can be more dynamic and intelligent and can evaluate different contexts throughout the decision-making process. We believe agents will achieve better and consensual decisions more easily. We tested our model in three simulation environments with different complexity levels. Our model proved that agents that use it will obtain higher average consensus and satisfaction levels. Besides that, agents using this model will obtain those higher consensus and satisfaction levels in most of the times compared to agents that do not use it. © IBERAMIA and the authors.

Approximate nearest neighbor query is a fundamental spatial query widely applied in many real-world applications. In the big data era, there is an increasing demand to scale these queries over a spatial data federation, which consists of multiple data owners, each holding a private, disjoint partition of the entire spatial dataset. However, it is non-trivial to enable approximate k-nearest neighbor query over a spatial data federation. This is because stringent security constraints are often imposed to protect the sensitive, privately owned data partitions, whereas naively extending prior secure query processing solutions leads to high inefficiency (e.g., 100 s per query). In this paper, we propose two novel algorithms for efficient and secure approximate k-nearest neighbor query over a spatial data federation. We theoretically analyze their communication cost and time complexity, and further prove their security guarantees and approximation bounds. Extensive experiments show that our algorithms outperform the state-of-the-art solutions with respect to the query efficiency and often yield a higher accuracy. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Microarray gene expression datasets comprise of a large number of genes in contrast to a small number of samples, thus having a high dimension of variables. Analysis of microarray data can lead us to many useful conclusions. In many microarray data analyses, selecting a small subset of genes which are of significance for a particular type of disease is an important issue but selection of such genes become difficult due to many irrelevant genes and noisy genes. The process of gene selection helps to extract the most informative genes, which consequently aid to build a robust prediction model using those genes. In this study, we employ a hybrid Chemical Reaction Optimization (CRO) based filter-wrapper methodology, which uses an information gain gene ranking heuristic to simultaneously extract informative gene subsets and build robust cancer classification models. The performance of the proposed method was tested on three benchmark gene expression datasets obtained from the Kent Ridge Biomedical datasets collection and the LIBSVM data repository. CRO results demonstrate its capability to select relevant genes with high confidence in comparison to the results reported earlier.

Online reviews can predict long-term returns of individual stocks

Online reviews are feedback voluntarily posted by consumers about their consumption experiences. This feedback indicates customer attitudes such as affection, awareness and faith towards a brand or a firm and demonstrates inherent connections with a company’s future sales, cash flow and stock pricing. However, the predicting power of online reviews for long-term returns on stocks, especially at the individual level, has received little research attention, making a comprehensive exploration necessary to resolve existing debates. In this paper, which is based exclusively on online reviews, a methodology framework for predicting long-term returns of individual stocks with competent performance is established. Specifically, 6,246 features of 13 categories inferred from more than 18 million product reviews are selected to build the prediction models. With the best classifier selected from cross-validation tests, a satisfactory increase in accuracy, 13.94%, was achieved compared to the cutting-edge solution with 10 technical indicators being features, representing an 18.28% improvement relative to the random value. The robustness of our model is further evaluated and testified in realistic scenarios. It is thus confirmed for the first time that long-term returns of individual stocks can be predicted by online reviews. This study provides new opportunities for investors with respect to long-term investments in individual stocks. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Weak ties strengthen anger contagion in social media

Increasing evidence suggests that, similar to face-to-face communications, human emotions also spread in online social media. However, the mechanisms underlying this emotion contagion, for example, whether different feelings spread in unlikely ways or how the spread of emotions relates to the social network, is rarely investigated. Indeed, because of high costs and spatio-temporal limitations, explorations of this topic are challenging using conventional questionnaires or controlled experiments. Because they are collection points for natural affective responses of massive individuals, online social media sites offer an ideal proxy for tackling this issue from the perspective of computational social science. In this paper, based on the analysis of millions of tweets in Weibo, surprisingly, we find that anger travels easily along weaker ties than joy, meaning that it can infiltrate different communities and break free of local traps because strangers share such content more often. Through a simple diffusion model, we reveal that weaker ties speed up anger by applying both propagation velocity and coverage metrics. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that quantitative long-term evidence has been presented that reveals a difference in the mechanism by which joy and anger are disseminated. With the extensive proliferation of weak ties in booming social media, our results imply that the contagion of anger could be profoundly strengthened to globalize its negative impact. Message Passing Interface (MPI) has been the predominant standard for writing parallel applications. MPI allows programmers to write a parallel application by handling the communication between a set of processes. The proprietary high performance network, along with the basic functionalities, may provide additional functionalities or may be able to handle some of the MPI functionalities. There is need to change or modify MPI library in order to validate additional functionalities that the network supports. We plan to implement parallel communication library (PCL) that can provide MPI like interface to the user and simultaneously make use of the additional features provided by the underlying network. The focus of our work is not to implement all the features that MPI provides for the application, but to implement minimal functionality of MPI and employ the additional features that the underlying network interconnect provides. Before targeting the proprietary network, we have developed parallel communication library for standard TCP stack as a part of the first stage of our project. We have implemented a few basic functions in parallel communication library. In this paper, we would like to share our work with the community. Also, we have evaluated the PCL for standard TCP stack using basic tests. We present the performance results of those basic tests.

There are reports of taste sensor fabrication by incorporating lipids in PVC matrix. We have taken an attempt to prepare taste sensor material by using functionalized polymer. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyacrylic acid (PAA) have been modified to fabricate the sensor material. The research work covers polymer membrane preparation, morphology study, and structural characterization of membrane and study of the taste sensing characteristics. The membrane was prepared by cross-linking polyvinyl alcohol and polyacrylic acid in aqueous-organic medium by using hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride (HDTC) with proper heat treatment. The cross-linked PVA-PAA was phosphorylated with POCl 3 . PVA-PAA membranes of suitable thickness were thus prepared with good threshold sensing value and less swelling in water. FTIR spectroscopic analysis, XRD analysis and optical microscopy were done to get an idea about the structure and morphology of the polymer membrane. Sensor device prepared with this membrane has shown distinct response patterns for different taste substances in terms of membrane potential. The sensor characteristics like temporal stability, response stability, response to different taste substances, and reproducibility of sensing performance were studied. Membranes also showed characteristic response patterns for organic acids like acetic acid, citric acid, formic acid, etc., mineral acids like HCl, H 2 SO 4 and HNO 3 , etc., salt, bitter substance, sweet substance, umami substance and different grades of tea. Sensor device prepared with this membrane has excellent shelf life.

In this paper, a RNS (Residue Number System) to Binary converter for the three-moduli set {2 n-1 -1, 2 n+k , 2 n -1} using two-stage Mixed Radix Conversion (MRC) is presented. Two separate cases (a) 0 ≤ k ≤ n-2, and (b) k = n-1, k = n lead to two different reverse converters. The proposed reverse converters are evaluated and compared with state of the art reverse converters proposed for this moduli set regarding hardware requirement and conversion time.

Image segmentation is a mixture of complex sub-problems. Following the concept of perceptual organization, we first discuss categorization of these problems. Then we propose a method to bind most of all pixels in each image regions. It is based on image region scanning dynamic wave propagation and region label information represented in the probability distribution. This wave propagation method realizes boundary noise robustness as well as its interpolation. The segment representation in probability distribution enhances the stability of the segmentation result.
