Grid computing is a collaborative e-infrastructure to solve large multidisciplinary problems having interrelated demands of data, compute, scientific instruments and increased importance of collaboration. Grid is a distributed system which enables sharing, selection, and aggregation of heterogeneous geographically distributed autonomous resources dynamically depending on their availability, capability, performance, and users QoS requirements. Validating such a vast system has additional complexities of heterogeneity, multiple administrative policies, and issues of multi-layer software interactions. GARUDA is the Indian National Grid computing Initiative connecting over 65 partnering institutes across 30 cities of India and aggregating over 70TF-15TB Compute-Storage power. The authors present the software engineering challenges and validation methodologies for GARUDA, to make it a production level grid. Integrated validation of GARUDA through Application testing, Health Monitoring, Middleware-Software testing, Performance benchmarking and Stress testing are described.

The performance (in terms of accuracy and speed) of present day document analysis systems, both handwritten and printed, depends on the preprocessing stage. In the existing literature we observe accuracy against speed trade-off. That is, superior binarization accuracy is arrived at the cost of increased processing time. The present paper proposes an improved binarization approach, which after a Pre Segmentation Binarization uses a state-of-the-art “fringe map” based text line segmentation algorithm to define text context. This text context is exploited to provide a more refined localized binarization (Post Segmentation Binarization). This unique combination gives benefits of both speed and accuracy with a scope of leveraging through parallel processing. It may additionally be used on skewed or warped camera captured document images. Experimental tests on ICFHR-DIBCO 2009, 2010 and 2011 databases of Printed/ Handwritten Document Images have shown promising results.

Most digital cameras use color filter arrays of different patterns to capture color image. The output of the color filter array is a sampled version of the original color image. Demosaicing algorithms are used to reconstruct the original color image from this sampled version. Medical image analysis is increasing day by day. The amount of data to be saved is also on the increase. Standard compression techniques like JPEG if used may cause loss of diagnostic data which cannot be tolerated. So if a proper demosaicing algorithm can be found such that there is not much loss of data in reconstruction then the images can be saved in raw format and color image can be reconstructed using this algorithm, when needed, leading to a great amount of compression. This paper studies and compares different existing demosaicing algorithms to find a suitable algorithm for this application.

Microarray cancer gene expression data comprise of very high dimensions. Reducing the dimensions helps in improving the overall analysis and classification performance. We propose two hybrid techniques, Biogeography - based Optimization - Random Forests (BBO - RF) and BBO - SVM (Support Vector Machines) with gene ranking as a heuristic, for microarray gene expression analysis. This heuristic is obtained from information gain filter ranking procedure. The BBO algorithm generates a population of candidate subset of genes, as part of an ecosystem of habitats, and employs the migration and mutation processes across multiple generations of the population to improve the classification accuracy. The fitness of each gene subset is assessed by the classifiers - SVM and Random Forests. The performances of these hybrid techniques are evaluated on three cancer gene expression datasets retrieved from the Kent Ridge Biomedical datasets collection and the libSVM data repository. Our results demonstrate that genes selected by the proposed techniques yield classification accuracies comparable to previously reported algorithms.

Tea is one of the most widely consumed beverages all over the world due to its delicate taste. It is, therefore, essential to establish a simple and reliable analytical tool for determination (or, discrimination) of tea quality. We have taken an attempt to discriminate the black tea of different qualities/grades by means of polymer membrane electrode based potentiometric taste sensor. Different types of phosphorylated and crosslinked polymer membranes were used to discriminate different grades of black tea by measuring the tastes in terms of membrane potential.

Cloud computing has attracted great attention due its various features. There are various rising concerns in its growth, one of which is security. Trust between provider and a user is the most important factor to be considered for achieving security, which is also essential to promote the reputation of various cloud providers and their offered services. Here we present a trust based solution in terms of a trust model that can be used to calculate the security strength of a particular cloud service. The trust value acts as a means for selecting any cloud service.

This paper presents a study of and triboson production using events from proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.2 fb . The production cross-section is determined using a final state containing an electron, a muon, a photon, and neutrinos ( ). Upper limits on the production cross-section of the final state and the and final states containing an electron or a muon, two jets, a photon, and a neutrino ( or ) are also derived. The results are compared to the cross-sections predicted by the Standard Model at next-to-leading order in the strong-coupling constant. In addition, upper limits on the production cross-sections are derived in a fiducial region optimised for a search for new physics beyond the Standard Model. The results are interpreted in the context of anomalous quartic gauge couplings using an effective field theory. Confidence intervals at 95% confidence level are derived for the 14 coupling coefficients to which and production are sensitive.

Focus group discussion is an exploratory research technique used to collect data through group interaction. This technique provides the opportunity to observe interaction among participants on a topic under this study. This paper contributes to an understanding on the cyber terrorism conceptual framework through the analysis of focus group discussion. The proposed cyber terrorism conceptual framework which was obtained during the qualitative study by the authors has been used as a basis for discussion in the focus group discussion. Thirty (30) participants took part in the focus group discussion. The overall results suggest that the proposed cyber terrorism framework is acceptable by the participants. The present study supports our initial research that the cyber terrorism conceptual framework constitutes the following components: target, motivation, tools of attack, domain, methods of attack and impact.

There are reports of taste sensor fabrication by incorporating lipids in PVC matrix. We have taken an attempt to prepare taste sensor material by using functionalized polymer. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyacrylic acid (PAA) have been modified to fabricate the sensor material. The research work covers polymer membrane preparation, morphology study, and structural characterization of membrane and study of the taste sensing characteristics. The membrane was prepared by cross-linking polyvinyl alcohol and polyacrylic acid in aqueous-organic medium by using hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride (HDTC) with proper heat treatment. The cross-linked PVA-PAA was phosphorylated with POCl 3 . PVA-PAA membranes of suitable thickness were thus prepared with good threshold sensing value and less swelling in water. FTIR spectroscopic analysis, XRD analysis and optical microscopy were done to get an idea about the structure and morphology of the polymer membrane. Sensor device prepared with this membrane has shown distinct response patterns for different taste substances in terms of membrane potential. The sensor characteristics like temporal stability, response stability, response to different taste substances, and reproducibility of sensing performance were studied. Membranes also showed characteristic response patterns for organic acids like acetic acid, citric acid, formic acid, etc., mineral acids like HCl, H 2 SO 4 and HNO 3 , etc., salt, bitter substance, sweet substance, umami substance and different grades of tea. Sensor device prepared with this membrane has excellent shelf life.

Despite the increasing request for intelligent applications with the heavy use of smart phone, little of them are available in daily life. One reason must be the high complexity of understanding user's situation. For application (app) developers, knowing user's context usually takes much more time and efforts than taking some useful actions. To help developing intelligent apps, we have proposed a mobile context-aware engine called Intelligent Mobile Platform (IMP). It provides user's current context to apps as a background service in android mobile phones. Especially, depending on user's current environments such as location, active apps, etc., IMP dynamically extends or shrinks its knowledge base. We believe that this dynamic reconfiguration is essential for mobile environment where user continuously changes his/her location and contexts. In this paper, we describe the reconfiguration part in detail. This feature is tested by three in-house apps with the IMP prototype on SAMSUNG Galaxy S II phone.
