Iris detection is a crucial part of an iris recognition system. One of the main issues in iris segmentation is coping with occlusions that happen due to eyelids and eyelashes. In This work, only the lower part of the iris is utilized for recognition. Wavelet based texture features along with a mixed Hamming; harmonic mean distance classifier is used for identification. It is observed that relying in a smaller but more reliable part of the iris, though reducing the net amount of information, improves the overall performance. Experimental results on CASIA database show that the method has a promising performance with an accuracy of more than 99%.

Purpose: We aimed to build a machine learning-based model to predict radiation-induced optic neuropathy in patients who had treated head and neck cancers with radiotherapy. Materials and methods: To measure radiation-induced optic neuropathy, the visual evoked potential values were obtained in both case and control groups and compared. Radiomics features were extracted from the area segmented which included the right and left optic nerves and chiasm. We integrated CT image features with dosimetric and clinical data subsequently, ranked 5 supervised ML models Bernoulli Naive Bayes, Decision Tree, Gradient Boosting Decision Trees, K-Nearest Neighbor, and Random Forest on 4 input datasets to predict radiation-induced visual complications classifiers by implementing 5-fold cross-validation. The F1 score, accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and area under the ROC curve were compared to access prediction capability. Results: radiation-induced optic neuropathy affected 31 % of the patients. 856 radiomic characteristics were extracted and selected from each segmented area. Decision Tree and Random Forest with the highest AUC (97 % and 95 % respectively) among the five classifiers were the most powerful algorithms to predict radiation-induced optic neuropathy. Chiasm with higher sensitivity and precision was able to predict radiation-induced optic neuropathy better than right or left optic nerve or combination of all radiomic features. Conclusion: We found that combination of radiomic, dosimetric, and clinical factors can predict radiation-induced optic neuropathy after radiation treatment with high accuracy. To acquire more reliable results, it is recommended to conduct visual evoked potential tests before and after radiation therapy, with multiple follow-up courses and more patients. © 2024 The Authors

intelligent control of home appliances, have in recent years, attracted much theoretical attention, as well as becoming a major factor for industrial and economic success and rapid market penetration. Washing machines represent an important market. intelligent control techniques are capable of providing useful means for both easier use and energy and water conservation. In this paper, we use two techniques that we have successfully used in other intelligent modeling and control applications. Firstly, we use a neurofuzzy locally linear model system for data driven modeling of the machine. Secondly, we use a neural computing technique, based on a mathematical model of amygdala and the limbic system, for emotional control of the washing machine. The obtained results indicate the applicability of the proposed techniques in this important business sector. © 2005 IEEE.

The paper elaborates the design of an optimal feedback control system for a washing machine. It is sought to save on the water and energy consumption and the associated wear and tear and detergent consumption through monitoring the washing process via feedback sensors rather than following a fixed cycle. A lumped nonlinear model is first fitted to empirical data. After choosing an appropriate objective function, the optimal control law is found via approximate solution of Hamiltonian-Jacobi-Bellman (H-J-B) equation. The results show the high performance of proposed controller. © 2005 IEEE.

Wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) is a relatively new technology that captures images of the entire gastrointestinal tract non-invasively and painlessly. A large number of frames are captured during an examination. The main difficulty for physicians is to review the frames visually. In recent years, some methods have been devised to help physicians. Here, a novel method is devised to distinguish among frames whether the frames contain abnormal region or not. This goal is achieved using local fuzzy patterns (LFP) that is compared with rotation invariant local binary patterns (LBP). In addition to this comparison, four color channels (red, hue, green, and gray scale) are examined to find the best one for using LFP. Experimental results indicate that LFP is a powerful method for texture detection, and can develop the LBP results in the WCE frames. © 2013 IEEE.

Using Haar wavelets, a computational method is presented to determine the piecewise constant feedback controls for a finite-time linear optimal control problem of a time-varying state-delayed system. The method is simple and computationally advantageous. The approximated optimal trajectory and optimal control are calculated using Haar wavelet integral operational matrix, Haar wavelet product operational matrix and Haar wavelet delay operational matrix. An illustrative example is included to demonstrate the validity and applicability of the technique.

Design, simulation, and optimization of a novel (extremely) broad-band coplanar waveguide (CPW)-fed on-chip antenna using Genetic Algorithm (GA) will be presented. The antenna is of slot type and has the shape of a bow-tie with rounded truncation. It is designed on quartz coated silicon substrate and fed with 50 ohms CPW transmission line. Return loss of the antenna is less than -10 dB for most of the frequency range of 5-60 GHz. © 2006 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. All rights reserved.

Most current search engines return a ranked list of results in response to the user's query. This simple approach may require the user to go through a long list of results to find the documents related to his information need. A common alternative is to cluster the search results and allow the user to browse the clusters, but this also imposes two challenges: 'how to define the clusters' and 'how to label the clusters in an informative way'. In this study, we propose an approach which uses Wikipedia as the source of information to organize the search results and addresses these two challenges. In response to a query, our method extracts a hierarchy of categories from Wikipedia pages and trains classifiers using web pages related to these categories. The search results are organized in the extracted hierarchy using the learned classifiers. Experiment results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach. © 2011 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Since the medical training samples are very limited, it is difficult to construct a statistical shape model with good generalization using few samples. In this paper, we propose a novel statistical shape modeling method using 2D PCA. The 3D shape is represented as a matrix by spherical parameterization. The experiments showed that our proposed method can reconstruct statistical shape model with good generalization even using fewer samples.

Successful organization needs effective decision making as one of its essential step. Nowadays, companies are growing in size and scope. These developments need control and managing at higher levels. With cooperative decision making, we can dissect the complexity into manageable pieces for each organizational decision maker which we call synonymously agent or expert. These agents collaborate and aggregate with each other, in order to achieve the most efficient decision. This paper presents a multi-agent framework for distributed fuzzy decision making. Interdependency and relation between these experts have been modeled with a directed/undirected graph. Each expert solves the problem of decision making with its own point of view and criteria. The question that arise here, is that under what conditions these agents reach to an agreement? This problem has also been addressed by the authors. A numerical example demonstrates the functionality and capability of the new method. © 2011 AmirKabir Univ of Tech.
