Due to rising value of energy supplies, the need for managing electrical energy sources becomes prominent. In this paper, a smart plug device is presented; which provides features to measure energy consumption and recognizes the type of attached electrical devices. Furthermore, the proposed framework enables home controller systems to monitor and control home energy consumption efficiently. Subsequently an analysis of energy consumption of a pilot house, prior and after the installation of the smart plug, based on a hypothetical scenario, is provided. The results present positive impacts of using the smart plug on energy consumption rate; especially during peak hours.

This paper presents an automated algorithm for shadow regions detection in IVUS images using a histogram modification method for threshold selection. The method employs the Type2 Fuzzy Set together with spatial information for shadow region separation from the background image. Shadow regions usually occur behind the calcium deposits making it difficult or impossible to process tissue images in these regions. Results show that the proposed method is effective in detection of parts of the image in the shadow regions. Applying to a data set of 40 IVUS frames the results show a good agreement between the automatically detected and manually defined shadow regions boundaries by the proposed method and the expert, respectively. © 2011 IEEE.

Twinkling artifact is a color flow Doppler sonography artifact appearing as rapidly changing color patterns, surprisingly at location of some non-moving objects such as sediments within tissue. Most studies in this area are as clinical trials and qualitative reports. Although the origin of this artifact is not completely known yet, there are two basic hypotheses suggested by Rahmouni and Kamaya in this regard. None of these hypotheses has been validated through computer simulation in the past. Simulation of twinkling artifact can play an important role in better understanding its origin. In this paper, we have simulated the twinkling artifact based upon the phase noise hypothesis as one of the major theories about its origin, for the first time. Our simulations have been implemented for both the single scan-line pulsed Doppler structure and the B-mode color flow Doppler. In both cases, the twinkling artifact was observed within the expected locations. The results indicate that the intrinsic phase noise in the pulse generation and transmission systems can cause twinkling artifact without considering any motion for the subject or transducer. This is a support for Kamaya's hypothesis. © 2011 IEEE.

Single Channel Speech Separation has been the objective of extensive research in recent years. In this paper, we propose a hybrid system of coherent and incoherent modulation filtering for separation of the target speech from the interference. In the proposed system, subband envelopes are determined using a coherently detected subband carrier based on the time-dependent spectral center-Of-Gravity (COG) demodulation and then the interference signal is eliminated by applying the adaptive Affine Projection (AP) filter to the subband envelop. The reference signal for the adaptive AP filter is provided by a parallel incoherent system of modulation filtering. Our evaluations, based on several objective measures, indicate that the proposed system extracts the majority of target speech signal segments with minimal interference, outperforming previous systems in voiced speech separation.

In rapid quadruped animals, the flexibility of spine is obviously observable while running. In this paper, we introduce a 3D passive dynamic quadruped robot, Fanari, that is capable to gallop down a slope without any external energy. We study the effect of spine flexibility on improvement of stability, adaptability and achievement of rapid leg locomotion. So a flexible spine that is capable to bend both outward and downward, a flexible spine that is only capable to bend outward and a rigid spine are designed and tested on the robot. Based on the case studies, we discuss about the challenges and the roles of spine stiffness on the gallop action. A simulation model is also made in order to corroborate the experimental results of the robot. It is concluded that the robot with the spine that is flexible in both outward and downward directions, has the most stability, adaptability and fastest velocity in its gallop action. © 2011 IEEE.

Purpose: To improve liver iron load assessment by investigating the precision of different approaches of T2* Measurement. Background: Iron overload is a major problem in the treatment of thalassemic patients. Liver iron concentration (LIC) is an important index toward the management of body iron load. The accuracy of iron load estimation may suffer from the methodology of T2* measurement and there is no complete agreement upon the best approach of T2* calculation. Methods: 32 β-thallasemic patients (18 male) with the mean age of 20.0 ± 6.5 years were involved in this study. A multi-echo fast gradient-echo technique on a 1.5 T MRI system was used to measure liver iron overload and the T2* map of liver was reconstructed on a pixel-by-pixel basis. The T2* map and MRI images were utilized to deter- mine accurate location of ROI (region of interest). The mean of T2* were computed from the ROIs. The reproducibility of calculated T2* values in two methods were obtained. Moreover, the mean of the pixel’s T2* was calculated in the entire liver parenchyma of one slice. The T2* value of the entire slice was compared with the ROI approach. Results: In the ROI based method, the CoV for the intra-observer reproducibility was 8.5% and for the inter-observer was 9.78%. In the pixel based method, the CoVs for intra-observer and inter-observer reproducibility were 2.79% and 3.91%. There was an acceptable correlation (r = 0.96) between the T2* values calculated by the ROI and the entire slice. Conclusions: The pixel-based approach is more precise to determine the appropriate placement of the ROI. The assessment of T2* in the entire slice reduces the user-based errors significantly.

Several methods for adjusting image contrast have been developed in the field of image processing for image enhancement. Illumination is one of the most significant factors affecting the appearance of an image. Improper illumination causes a variety of problems in practice and thus, it is necessary to compensate for nonuniform illumination. Wireless Capsule Endoscopy (WCE) images suffer from this problem too. We propose an improved Adaptive Gamma Correction Method (AGCM) to compensate for nonuniform illumination in WCE color images. The experiments have shown that the proposed AGCM performs well in improving image quality. The WCE images obtained with AGCM are also better than those obtained with histogram equalization and adaptive histogram equalization in terms of brightness constancy, overall visual rendition and contrast. The Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) and Contrast to Noise Ratio (CNR) values are also higher for AGCM than for other correction algorithms. Also, the differences between edge pixels and neighboring pixels in the WCE images are increased. We use a color variant of the canny operator for color edge detection. By using this method, 65% of the borders are detected correctly, while the detection rate is 45% without using this method.

This paper presents a modified fuzzy TOPSIS method with a new distance measurement and a fuzzy majority opinion aggregator for a multi criteria decision making (MCDM) problem. The rating of each alternative and the weight of each criterion is described by linguistic terms which can be expressed in triangular fuzzy numbers. We introduce a new distance metric by using graded mean integration representation of triangular fuzzy numbers. The concept of majority opinion gives an overall opinion which synthesizes the opinions of the majority of the decision makers. Fuzzy majority opinion aggregator is used to make a consensual judgment synthesizing the individual opinions. To clarify our proposed method, a numerical example is discussed. Results show that our proposed algorithm is more advantageous in reflecting opinions of the majority of decision makers and also provides more confidence for their decisions. © 2011 AmirKabir Univ of Tech.

As a developing field of investigation, exploring the causal relations (effective connectivity) among brain regions, helps the neurologists to understand the brain function. Most of effective connectivity measures are model-based but in the recent years some nonparametric measures like Transfer Entropy (TE) have been proposed. TE is based on the conditional mutual information concept. However in the presence of strong instantaneous relations that are observed extensively among cortical activity of brain regions, TE may estimate the causal (delayed) relations inaccurately. In this paper we present a novel information-theoretic based measure called Instantaneous Interaction (II) to estimate the brain instantaneous relations. Then we present a novel measure called Modified Transfer Entropy (MTE) to estimate the causal (delayed) relations when II is significant. The performance of these new measures is evaluated on 3 simulated models and experimental EEG data. © 2011 IEEE.

In this paper, system identification and neural network predictive control (NNPC) of a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) is presented. The control problem with the objective of set point tracking between several modes is investigated. The real measurements of this process are used in system identification. Artificial networks such as MultiLayer Perceptron (MLP), Radial Basis Function (RBF), and Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference Systems (ANFIS) are applied as the intelligent identifiers to system identification. Neural network predictive control is utilized to control of continuous stirred tank reactor output. The predictive control strategy is used to calculate optimal control inputs. Two viewpoints are considered in neural network predictive control. One of them is based on neural network model of continuous stirred tank reactor and another one is based on dynamical model of continuous stirred tank reactor. Simulation results show the validity and feasibility of the proposed methods to neural network predictive control of continuous stirred tank reactor process. © 2011 IEEE.
