The 600 keV electron injections in the Earth's outer radiation belt:A statistical study

Relativistic electron injections are one of the mechanisms of relativistic(≥0.5 MeV) electron enhancements in the Earth’s outer radiation belt. In this study, we present a statistical observation of 600 keV electron injections in the outer radiation belt by using data from the Van Allen Probes. On the basis of the characteristics of different injections, 600 keV electron injections in the outer radiation belt were divided into pulsed electron injections and nonpulsed electron injections. The 600 keV electron injections were observed at 4.5 < L <6.4 under the geomagnetic conditions of 450 nT < AE < 1,450 nT. An L of ~4.5 is an inward limit for 600 keV electron injections. Before the electron injections, a flux negative L shell gradient for ≤0.6 MeV electrons or low electron fluxes in the injected region were observed. For600 keV electron injections at different L shells, the source populations from the Earth’s plasma sheet were different. For 600 keV electron injections at higher L shells, the source populations were higher energy electrons(~200 keV at X ~–9 R_(E)), whereas the source populations for 600 keV electron injections at lower L shells were lower energy electrons(~80 keV at X ~–9 R_(E)). These results are important to further our understanding of electron injections and rapid enhancements of 600 keV electrons in the Earth’s outer radiation belt.

Any predictive software deployed with this hypothesis that test data distribution will not differ from training data distribution. Real time scenario does not follow this rule, which results inconsistent and non-transferable observation in various cases. This makes the dataset shift, a growing concern. In this paper, we’ve explored the recent concept of Label shift detection and classifier correction with the help of Black Box shift detection(BBSD), Black Box shift estimation(BBSE) and Black Box shift correction(BBSC). Digits dataset from"sklearn" and"LogisticRegression" classifier have been used for this investigation. Knock out shift was clearly detected by applying Kolmogorov–Smirnov test for BBSD. Performance of the classifier got improved after applying BBSE and BBSC from 91% to 97% in terms of overall accuracy. © 2021, CC BY-NC-SA.

With digitlzation growing by leap and bounds, websites are now overloaded with products and information density, making it challenging for customers to choose between a variety of products. The Recommendation engine enables companies to deliver their customers more personalized and customized products or information efficiently. As a result, the recommendation engine eventually helps in boosting different business performance metrics such as revenues, Click- Through Rates (CTRs), conversions, etc., for these companies significantly. And in the long run, it also optimizes user experience, thus translating to higher customer satisfaction and retention. In this paper, we will highlight some of the contemporary algorithms used in building high-performance recommendation engines, illustrate use cases from Tech Giants that can be applied in the context of the banking and financial services domain and identify major challenges that are open for further research work. Also, in this paper, we will be using recommendation engine and recommender system alternatively as both are synonymous.

Initializing weights are important for fast convergence and performance improvement of Artificial Neural Network models. This study proposes a heuristic method to initialize weights for Neural Network with Fibonacci sequence. Experiments have been carried out with different network structures and datasets and results have been compared with other initialization techniques such as Zero, Random, Xavier and He. It has been observed that for small sized datasets, Fibonacci initialization technique reports 94% of test accuracy which is better than Random (85%) and close to Xavier (93%) and He (96%) initialization methods. Also, for medium sized dataset, we have noted that performance of Fibonacci weight initialization method is comparable with the same for Random, Xavier and He initialization techniques.

We present a design and implementation of distributed sparse block grids that transparently scale from a single CPU to multi-GPU clusters. We support dynamic sparse grids as, e.g., occur in computer graphics with complex deforming geometries and in multi-resolution numerical simulations. We present the data structures and algorithms of our approach, focusing on the optimizations required to render them computationally efficient on CPUs and GPUs alike. We provide a scalable implementation in the OpenFPM software library for HPC. We benchmark our implementation on up to 16 Nvidia GTX 1080 GPUs and up to 64 Nvidia A100 GPUs showing state-of-the-art scalability (68% to 96% parallel efficiency) on three benchmark problems. On a single GPU, our implementation is 14 to 140-fold faster than on a multi-core CPU. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Cu-doped ZnO (CZO) with Cu %mole of 0, 13, 14, and 15% have been synthesized by the co-precipitation method with controlled pH at 9. The diffraction pattern of CZO shows that a single phase of ZnO with wurtzite structure (w-ZnO) was achieved in the parent compound. In contrast, small fractions of the secondary phase of CuO monoclinic (m-CuO) were identified in the doped compounds. Rietveld-refinement on the X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) patterns reveals that the crystallite size of CZO is estimated in the range of 84-148 nm with instrumental correction factor and that CZO14 exhibits the most considerable fraction of m-CuO among the samples. Interestingly, lattice constants decrease by Cu doping. The effects of Cu doping on the valence state and the local structure were investigated by X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS). Based on our analysis on both Cu Kedge and Zn K-edge XANES spectra, oxidation states of Cu and Zn ions are about +2 with no evidence of other valence states. Cu atom is likely to incorporate into wurtzite crystal lattice by occupying Zn sites in a small portion, and the doped compounds create a few oxygen vacancies. © 2021 Trans Tech Publications Ltd, Switzerland.

Achieving Fairness with a Simple Ridge Penalty

In this paper we present a general framework for estimating regression models subject to a user-defined level of fairness. We enforce fairness as a model selection step in which we choose the value of a ridge penalty to control the effect of sensitive attributes. We then estimate the parameters of the model conditional on the chosen penalty value. Our proposal is mathematically simple, with a solution that is partly in closed form, and produces estimates of the regression coefficients that are intuitive to interpret as a function of the level of fairness. Furthermore, it is easily extended to generalised linear models, kernelised regression models and other penalties;and it can accommodate multiple definitions of fairness. We compare our approach with the regression model from Komiyama et al. (2018), which implements a provably-optimal linear regression model;and with the fair models from Zafar et al. (2019). We evaluate these approaches empirically on six different data sets, and we find that our proposal provides better goodness of fit and better predictive accuracy for the same level of fairness. Active polar fluids exhibit spontaneous flow when sufficient active stress is generated by internal molecular mechanisms. This is also referred to as an active Fréedericksz transition. Experiments have revealed the existence of competing in-plane and out-of-plane instabilities in three-dimensional active matter. So far, however, a theoretical model reconciling all observations is missing. In particular, the role of boundary conditions in these instabilities still needs to be explained. Here, we characterize the spontaneous flow transition in a symmetry-preserving three-dimensional active Ericksen-Leslie model, showing that the boundary conditions select the emergent behavior. Using nonlinear numerical solutions and linear perturbation analysis, we explain the mechanism for both in-plane and out-of-plane instabilities under extensile active stress for perpendicular polarity anchoring at the boundary, whereas parallel anchoring only permits in-plane flows under contractile stress or out-of-plane wrinkling under extensile stress.

The increase in free trade will also amplify the exchange of goods between countries and islands, especially in the seaports. The manual operation of the gantry-crane at the seaports has a risk due to human negligence. For that reason, automation is strongly needed in the loading and unloading of the container. Camera-based object detection is implemented to achieve this goal. In the recent years, CNN gives better accuracy in term of image classification, recognition and detection compared to the traditional method that use handcrafted features. In this paper, several advanced detection methods using CNN-based object detection, namely MobileNet, ResNet, and Faster RCNN are compared to detect and track the movement of containers. The results of the experiment show that the SSD ResNet and Faster RCNN methods are superior in terms of detection accuracy based on the Precision, Recall, Average Precision, and IoU values. MobileNet v3 excels in speed detection compared to the other methods. © 2021 IEEE.

Due to its significant applications in magnetic devices for cell separation, magnetic drugs for cancer tumor treatment, blood flow adjustment during surgery, magnetic endoscopy, and fluid pumping in industrial and engineering processes, magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) has a wide range of applications. Therefore, the aim of this study to investigate the Relative Magnetic Field and slipping effect on Casson dusty fluid of two-phase fluctuating flow over inclined parallel plate. More exactly, the relative magnetic phenomena are fixed relatively to the plate (MFFRP) or fixed relatively to the fluid (MFFRF). The mathematical modeling was established as the set of partial differential equations for dusty Casson fluid. Buckingham's pi theorem is used to find out the dimensionless variables, to make our system dimensionless. The solution in perturb form is to find out by incorporating Poincare–Lighthill perturbation technique (PLPT). To know in-depth different parameters the graphical results for both velocities are plotted with the help of software Mathcad- 15. It is clearly detected that the relative magnetic field performs a vital part in the fluid as well as particle motion. Moreover, the relative magnetic field play a vital role in the decreasing of skin friction of both plates. © 2023
