High-dimensional and incomplete(HDI) matrices are primarily generated in all kinds of big-data-related practical applications. A latent factor analysis(LFA) model is capable of conducting efficient representation learning to an HDI matrix,whose hyper-parameter adaptation can be implemented through a particle swarm optimizer(PSO) to meet scalable ***, conventional PSO is limited by its premature issues,which leads to the accuracy loss of a resultant LFA model. To address this thorny issue, this study merges the information of each particle's state migration into its evolution process following the principle of a generalized momentum method for improving its search ability, thereby building a state-migration particle swarm optimizer(SPSO), whose theoretical convergence is rigorously proved in this study. It is then incorporated into an LFA model for implementing efficient hyper-parameter adaptation without accuracy loss. Experiments on six HDI matrices indicate that an SPSO-incorporated LFA model outperforms state-of-the-art LFA models in terms of prediction accuracy for missing data of an HDI matrix with competitive computational ***, SPSO's use ensures efficient and reliable hyper-parameter adaptation in an LFA model, thus ensuring practicality and accurate representation learning for HDI matrices.

In blockchain networks, transactions can be transmitted through channels. The existing transmission methods depend on their routing information. If a node randomly chooses a channel to transmit a transaction, the transmission may be aborted due to insufficient funds(also called balance) or a low transmission rate. To increase the success rate and reduce transmission delay across all transactions, this work proposes a transaction transmission model for blockchain channels based on non-cooperative game *** balance, channel states, and transmission probability are fully considered. This work then presents an optimized channel transaction transmission algorithm. First, channel balances are analyzed and suitable channels are selected if their balance is sufficient. Second, a Nash equilibrium point is found by using an iterative sub-gradient method and its related channels are then used to transmit transactions. The proposed method is compared with two state-of-the-art approaches: Silent Whispers and Speedy Murmurs. Experimental results show that the proposed method improves transmission success rate, reduces transmission delay,and effectively decreases transmission overhead in comparison with its two competitive peers.

Privacy of Distributed Optimality Schemes in Power Networks

The increasing participation of local generation and controllable demand units within the power network motivates the use of distributed schemes for their control. Simultaneously, it raises two issues;achieving an optimal power allocation among these units, and securing the privacy of the generation/demand profiles. This study considers the problem of designing distributed optimality schemes that preserve the privacy of the generation and controllable demand units within the secondary frequency control timeframe. We propose a consensus scheme that includes the generation/demand profiles within its dynamics, keeping this information private when knowledge of its internal dynamics is not available. However, the prosumption profiles may be inferred using knowledge of its internal model. We resolve this by proposing a privacy-preserving scheme which ensures that the generation/demand cannot be inferred from the communicated signals. For both proposed schemes, we provide analytic stability, optimality and privacy guarantees and show that the secondary frequency control objectives are satisfied. The presented schemes are distributed, locally verifiable and applicable to arbitrary network topologies. Our analytic results are verified with simulations on a 140-bus system, where we demonstrate that the proposed schemes offer enhanced privacy properties, enable an optimal power allocation and preserve the stability of the power network. © 2010-2012 IEEE.

Demand Management for Peak-to-Average Ratio Minimization via Intraday Block Pricing

Price based demand response schemes may significantly improve power system efficiency. Additionally, it is desired that such schemes yield improved power operation, by reducing the peak consumption. This paper proposes the Intraday Block Pricing (IBP) scheme, aiming to promote effective demand response among consumers by charging their electricity usage based on intraday time-slots. To design the prices associated with the proposed scheme, we formulate a bilevel optimization problem that aims to minimize the Peak-to-Average Ratio (PAR) and simultaneously benefit the consumers and the utility company. The bilevel problem is converted into a single-level Mathematical Program with Equilibrium Constraints (MPEC). The resulting MPEC is non-convex and includes nonlinear constraints. Hence, to obtain a solution, it is relaxed into a Mixed Integer Linear Program by dealing with all nonlinearities. To evaluate the conservativeness of the proposed approach, a lower bound to the cost of the original bilevel problem is obtained. The applicability of the proposed scheme is demonstrated with simulations on various case studies, which exhibit a significant reduction in PAR and economic gains for the utility company and consumers. Moreover, simulation results show that the solutions of the original and relaxed problems are equivalent, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed solution approach. Further simulation results demonstrate significant advantages in the performance of the IBP scheme when compared to existing schemes in the literature. © 2010-2012 IEEE.

We present a conceptual framework for applying pricing in macroscopic traffic networks, focusing on how traffic flows route themselves when path prices are utilized to manage demand at a macroscopic level. We define the minimum disutility mechanism that guides flows in macroscopic traffic networks, and illustrate the guiding process of flows under the effect of pricing, utilizing simple road network structures. The suggested mechanism forms the cornerstone of the conceptual framework for dynamic pricing in a macroscopic setting, as described herein. This framework highlights that, within a priced network, implementing a dynamic pricing policy to adjust path prices and equalize their disutilities can effectively distribute demand across both spatial and temporal dimensions. To ensure an efficient demand distribution, and thereby keep the network at the non-congested regime, an adequate availability of spatiotemporal paths is required however, both with and without perfect routing information. © 2024 IEEE.

Traffic monitoring has been one of the major tools used for transportation operations and planning. The emergence of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) provides new capabilities for traffic management purposes. One of the most challenging tasks of UAVs is path planning, that aims to determine the most efficient route of a UAV from an initial point to a target point, with respect to a specific task to be optimised. In this work we focus on the efficient traffic density estimation. Towards this, we propose an online probabilistic UAV trajectory construction methodology, that aims to select the next moves from which the UAV should obtain measurements of the traffic density, while aiming to minimise the total uncertainty of the traffic density across all time-space points in the time-horizon under study. We incorporate the Gaussian Process (GP) model to accurately estimate traffic density of specific road segments in a multi-lane highway even when data points are sparse within the specified time-space region under study. We employ a decision-theoretic methodology to develop Bayesian optimal UAV trajectories aimed at minimizing traffic density uncertainty. Finally, a simulation study is performed to evaluate the proposed methodology that shows that it reduces the uncertainty of the traffic density up to 70% compared to a simple cyclical UAV trajectory. © 2024 IEEE.

This position paper introduces a novel Cyber-Physical-Socio-Environmental Systems (CPSES) framework for Smart Water Networks (SWN). The proposed framework introduces environmental aspects as a key constituent, which is important for addressing the interconnected challenges of water systems, such as climate change impacts, contamination risk, and sustainability. The CPSES framework dynamically incorporates interactions between physical components (sensors, actuators), cyber systems (control, monitoring, digital twins), social factors (policy, demand management, crisis response), and environmental impacts (emissions, resource availability). The significance of this framework lies in its potential to enable more resilient, sustainable, and secure SWNs by incorporating feedback loops among the CPSES constituents. Key CPSES research challenges are outlined, such as modeling the impacts of climate change, dynamic risk estimation, and ethical and fairness aspects within SWN. A real-world use case on water contamination crisis management demonstrates the framework's practical application and relevance for researchers. © 2024 The Authors.

Battery energy storage systems (BESSs) are widely used in energy management applications to maximize arbitrage profits. The consideration of the power losses from both battery and inverter components in optimization schemes is vital to ensure the economic BESSs scheduling. Towards this direction, this work develops two optimization models that consider the combined inverter-battery efficiency. The first model represents the non-linear efficiency curve of the inverter using a piecewise linear approximation, resulting in mixed-integer linear programming formulations. The second model approximates the nonlinear efficiency curve using a constant term, resulting in linear programming formulations which can be fast and reliably solved. Moreover, an experimental investigation is performed to derive the efficiency curve of a real inverter-battery system, where the parameters of the two models are identified. Simulation results highlight the necessity to consider the efficiencies from both battery and inverter components to reduce modelling inaccuracies and hence to maximize profits. The results also show the capability of the linear programming model to yield high-quality solutions with an approximation error of less than 1%. © 2024 IEEE.

The increasing penetration of photovoltaic systems (PV) in distribution grids can create significant over-voltage conditions due to intense reverse power flow. In addition to reactive power control, PV curtailments are often employed for voltage regulation to ensure compliance with the regulatory limits. However, reducing the output power of a PV system results to a revenue drop for the owners, raising concerns about fairness. Relevant works often address this issue through penalty terms in the objective function, but most works neglect the trade-off between fairness and total curtailments, i.e., increasing fairness leads to an increase of total curtailments. This paper proposes a novel methodology to enhance the fairness of PV curtailments for voltage regulation while ensuring that the increase in total curtailments is within a specified acceptable limit. In this direction, the Jain's fairness index is used to quantitatively measure fairness, which is incorporated in the optimization process as a second order cone program constraint. An iterative algorithm based on the bisection method is then developed to increase fairness until the allowable total curtailments are reached. Simulation results demonstrate the capability of the proposed method to improve the fairness of PV curtailments, considering different levels of allowable total curtailments. © 2024 IEEE.
